Nerscylla (ネルスキュラ,   Nerusukyura) are arachnid kaiju featured in the 2020 film, Monster Hunter. They are based on the monster species of the same name from the Capcom Monster Hunter video game franchise.

Name

Nerscylla is named after the Mesopotamian god of plague and war, Nergal, and Neoscona Scylla, the scientific name of an of orb-weaver spider. One potential name for Nerscylla was Azravel, a combination of Azrael and veleno, which is poison in Italian, and includes ravel in the name. Another potential name for Nerscylla was Thranid, a combination of Thanatos and arachnid.[2]

Personality

Design

Nerscylla resemble arachnids like spiders, but unlike spiders they only have six limbs, a characteristic seen more in insects rather than arachnids. They have four legs and two forelimbs that resemble the forelimbs of mantids. They also possess multiple spikes on their back and an abdominal stinger.

There are multiple differences between Nerscylla, such as the arrangement of the spikes on their back. Other differences include, some being draped in a coating that appears to be the skin from other creatures, while most of the Nerscylla have black heads with black eyes, there was one Nerscylla that had a pale white head with blue eyes which closer resembles its videogame counterpart. There are a couple major differences between the live-action Nerscylla and its videogame counterpart, mainly seen in the anatomy of the head. While the live-action Nerscylla has three eyes on both sides of its head, its videogame counterpart has six eyes on the front of its face. Unlike its videogame counterpart, Nerscylla has large fangs on its top jaw and a bottom jaw that splits in half to create mandibles.

Physical capabilities

Reproduction

Nerscylla appears to have two methods of reproduction as seen with a cluster of eggs wrapped in a strange cocoon like growth hanging from ceiling of the hive while the second method appears to be parasitic as seen when a surviving lincoln is found complaining of chest pains the cause is revealed as having multiple boil like eggs on the side of his Torso hatch into numerous tiny spiders

Weaknesses

Nerscylla have displayed an aversion to sunlight refusing to come out during the day to hunt preferring a nocturnal lifestyle they also appear to be harmed by fire after multiple individuals was set aflame by artemis which the burning creatures panicked and squirmed however one individual was shown to still pursue artemis while on fire but was deterred when leftover bullets was tossed onto the creatures flaming carapace setting off small explosive reactions

Nerscyllas carapace is unable to protect it from the oversized blade of the hunters greatsword as shown when a single jump down vertical slice was able to bisect one of the Spider monsters head in half with ease
