Nerscylla (ネルスキュラ,   Nerusukyura) are arachnid monsters featured in the 2020 film, Monster Hunter. They are based on the monster species of the same name from the Capcom Monster Hunter video game franchise.

Name

Nerscylla is named after the Mesopotamian god of plague and war, Nergal, and Neoscona Scylla, the scientific name of an of orb-weaver spider which in of itself was named after a sea monster from greek mythology.[2]

Personality

Nerscylla are nocturnal ambush predators who are hunt in swarms. Even though they are aggressive, they become immediately frightened by sunlight.

Design

Nerscylla resemble arachnids like spiders, but unlike spiders they only have six limbs, a characteristic seen more in insects rather than arachnids. They have four legs and two forelimbs that resemble the forelimbs of mantids. They also possess multiple spikes on their back and an abdominal stinger.

There are multiple differences between Nerscylla, such as the arrangement of the spikes on their back. Other differences include, some being draped in a coating that appears to be the skin from other creatures, while most of the Nerscylla have black heads with black eyes, there was one Nerscylla that had a pale white head with blue eyes which closer resembles its videogame counterpart. There are a couple major differences between the live-action Nerscylla and its videogame counterpart, mainly seen in the anatomy of the head. While the live-action Nerscylla has three eyes on both sides of its head, its videogame counterpart has six eyes on the front of its face. Unlike its videogame counterpart, Nerscylla has large fangs on its top jaw and a bottom jaw that splits in half to create mandibles.

Abilities

Stinger venom

Nerscylla can release a venom from their stingers that is potent enough to immediately knock out a human.

Webbing

Nerscylla can also shoot webbing from their stingers. They use their webbing to build their hives and to cocoon their victims.

Swarm

Nerscylla hunt in hordes and use their numbers to swarm their targets.

Physical capabilities

Nerscylla use their large mandibles to eat their prey. Their mandibles are strong enough that they can crush a humans head. Their carapace is strong enough to protect them from bullets.

Reproduction

Nerscylla have two ways of reproduction. The first method is laying a cluster of eggs, then wrapping them in a cocoon like growth to hang from the ceiling of the hive. The second method is parasitic, they will lay their eggs inside of a victim, this will then lead to pain and boils to appear on the victim’s body, the hatchlings will then burst out from the boils and proceed to feed on the victim’s body.

Weaknesses

Nerscylla are shown to have multiple weaknesses. Due to having a nocturnal lifestyle, they do not like light enough to the point they will give up on trying to catch easy prey. They also appear to be harmed by fire as after Artemis sprayed them with fire, multiple Nerscylla proceeded to panic and squirm, however there was one individual who kept its pursuit on Artemis, even while it was set aflame. They also fear bullets as the one Nerscylla that pursued Artemis was deterred after Artemis threw her leftover bullets onto its flaming carapace, which then set off the bullets and make small explosives, bullets are also strong enough to shoot out the eyes of a Nerscylla. A Nerscylla easily had its head sliced in half after the hunter jumped down at it with the oversized blade of his greatsword. Nerscylla are also susceptible to explosions as seen when the hunter was able to kill two with explosives that were attached to an arrow. A Nerscylla was stopped after it set off the trap Artemis and the hunter set up.
