Godzilla vs. Kong is an upcoming 2020 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures, and the fourth entry in the MonsterVerse. It will be released to American theaters on March 13, 2020.[1]

Description

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans' origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.[2]

Development

Rumors of a King Kong vs. Godzilla remake began as soon as Legendary Pictures announced Kong: Skull Island in 2014. On September 10, 2015, Deadline reported that the project's move from Universal Pictures to Godzilla distributor Warner Bros. was meant to facilitate a rematch between the two monsters.[3] The Hollywood Reporter published its own article on the impending crossover six days later.[4] On October 14, 2015, Legendary confirmed its intent to launch a cinematic universe featuring both Godzilla and King Kong, as well as other giant monsters including Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Godzilla was the first entry in this cinematic universe, later officially dubbed the MonsterVerse, and it was to be followed by Kong: Skull Island and the Godzilla sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters before finally culminating with Godzilla vs. Kong.[5] Initially, the release date for Godzilla vs. Kong was simply given as 2020. On May 10, 2016, The Wrap reported that Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong had been given new release dates of March 22, 2019 and May 29, 2020, respectively.[6]

On March 10, 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Legendary would be assembling a writers room to come up with the story for the film, comprised of Terry Rossio (who previously worked on the original version of TriStar's Godzilla film), Patrick McKay, J.D. Payne, Lindsey Beer, Cat Vasko, T.S. Nowlin, and J. Michael Straczynski.[7] On May 3, Warner Bros. announced that it had moved the release date for Godzilla vs. Kong up a week from May 29, 2020 to May 22.[8] Adam Wingard finalized a deal to become the film's director on May 30.[9] In an interview with ScreenCrush on August 18, he described Godzilla vs. Kong as a "massive monster brawl movie." He said the film would contain "lots of monsters going crazy on each other" but also stated "at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it."[10]

On June 1, That Hashtag Show revealed that Deadpool 2 star Julian Dennison had been cast in the film in a supporting role, while Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler would both be reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The article also reported that Legendary had offered Frances McDormand a starring role in the film.[11] The following day, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed this report, save for the talks with McDormand, adding that Zhang Ziyi would be reprising her role from Godzilla: King of the Monsters as well, and that Van Marten would be joining the film's cast.[12] After That Hashtag Show claimed McDormand had been cast in July, her representatives denied her involvement.[13] That Hashtag Show later clarified in a retraction that McDormand was never in negotiations for a role and had passed on the film.[14]

Further casting announcements followed as the film neared the start of production: Brian Tyree Henry on October 10,[15] Demián Bichir on October 17,[16] Alexander Skarsgård on October 25,[17] Eiza González[18] and Rebecca Hall on October 30,[19] Jessica Henwick on November 8,[20] Shun Oguri on November 11,[21] and Lance Reddick on November 14.[22]

On February 21, 2019, Warner Bros. moved up the release date of the film to March 13 to avoid competition with the ninth entry in the The Fast and the Furious franchise.[1]

On May 30, the day before the international theatrical release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, an advertisement for Godzilla vs. Kong was shown at Licensing Expo 2019, featuring artwork of the two titular monsters battling with the tagline "One will fall." On June 17, Warner Bros. presented footage from Godzilla vs. Kong along with its other major upcoming films to European exhibitors at CineEurope. Deadline reported that Godzilla vs. Kong was set to release internationally on March 11, 2020 two days before its American debut, despite earlier comments from WB Chairman Toby Emmerich suggesting the possibility that the film could be delayed.[23]

Production

Principal photography on Godzilla vs. Kong began on November 12, 2018 in Hawaii, under the title Apex.[24] The production wrapped in Hawaii on December 20 and resumed at Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, Australia, in the third week of January.[25] Outdoor shoots took place at various Gold Coast locations, wrapping in early April.[26]

This better be good, or I'll probably cry into a pillow. Adam Wingard being the director worries me considering he directed that absolutely awful Death Note movie. I don't see how he could possibly screw up having two monsters fight each other, but if he somehow does, I'll feel sad.

@Conder99: *Heavy sigh* I’ll try to go easy on you (keyword: “easy”) This is why fandoms need a reality check. Dude, STOP rambling about these “Kong Fans” you keep bringing up, it makes no sense whatsoever. I hate to say it, but you’re sounding like these Carnage fanboys who can’t accept the fact that Lucy (Elfen Lied) beat him, they’re just angry because they don’t know how to take a loss, and they think Death Battle affects their lives (I favor Lucy more, but I would’ve been fine with Carnage winning, because they’re FICTIONAL)!

Look, I know it seems like I have nothing better to do but to attack you, or go on unrelated tirades about irrelevant topics, but listen Conder, STOP with the whole “Angry Kong Fans” tirade, it doesn’t matter who wins in GvK, I’m fine with either one winning (though I favor Godzilla more because of what he demonstrated in KotM), why can’t you? (Also, wasn’t this sh*t resolved last week?)

I’ll close with what The King of the Monsters said last week: “I find it hilarious how people constantly point to this boogeyman "King Kong fanbase" like it has tremendous influence over films. Kong doesn't have a fanbase like Godzilla does, he's sort of a stock character that is almost universally known but doesn't typically boast a huge dedicated fanbase, much like Dracula or Frankenstein's monster. Most people who are fans of Kong in the way people are fans of Godzilla are themselves fans of Godzilla and giant monster movies to begin with. There is no gigantic "Kong fanbase" out to ruin Godzilla, there's just extremely insecure paranoid Godzilla fans who can't stand the idea of Godzilla possibly fighting a giant ape who blame the very concept of Kong having a chance of winning on Kong's supposed "fanbase."”

P.S. Can you just stop, please? Thanks.

Only thing I can say is that they'd better incorporate Kong's electric abilities and up the ante on them by a lot. Like making them permanent and having full-on electrokinesis, similar to Marvel's Thor and DC's Black Lightning and Lightning (BL's daughter).

Yeah, especially if he could grab enemies with electricity, just like Lightning does! And maybe even add a berserk form (*Enter Mega Kong and Mega Kiko*) with umbra-electrokinetic abilites! Then he'd share a similarity with Izuku "Deku" Midoriya's newly discovered sub-power of One For All, Blackwhip!

I'd like to see Kong (blue and blue/black), Kiko (yellow and yellow/black), and Lady Kong (pink) with the following abilities:

Primal Stone Conduit (*3/13; Lightning, Air, and Power*), Piezo-Electrokinetic Combat (as Kong, Kiko, and Lady Kong)/Piezo-Umbra-Electrokinetic Combat (as Mega Kong and Mega Kiko) (Furious Megaton Punch/Kick, Electric Punch/Kick, Electric Grip, Thunder Roar [as Mega Kong and Mega Kiko], Thunder Shockwave [as Mega Kong and Mega Kiko], and Thunder Whip [as Mega Kong and Mega Kiko]), and Ambient Electrokinetic Absorption.

Advantages: Atomic breath, armored skin, powerful tail, breathes air and water, strong bite, slashing claws, fast

Disadvantages: Doesn't turn well, probably not as smart as Kong, gills on the neck

Advantages: Turns well, smart, fast, can get to high ground

Monkey flesh. LOL! It's sad that King is viewed as just a Monkey. Scientifically if you take a silver back gorilla of Kong's you have to assume that an animal of his size, speed, intelligence, flexibility, and most certainly his strength has to be beyond phenomenal! Logically Godzilla is built like a tank. Powerful but slow. His atomic BREATH in the 2014 film wasn't even an instant kill move. If anything it was more like a stun or a force push move. Plus Kong won't just stand in one place and wait to be blasted by Godzilla. King Kong us more like a UFC fighter fierce and explosive. If he does lose it will only be because Godzilla has more marketing value than Kong. In my own personal opinion I'd like to see King Kong ride that hybrid steggy rex, body slam, ground pound, tailswing choke out and neck break him!! No offense.

Theres so much wrong with this I don't even know here to start, first off, being an ape doesn't mean shit if hes facing a creature that can be as strong, fast or smart as the writers needs him to be, and second off, his breath is a force push kinda ability, the only reason his breath was ineffective was because of the EMP the mutos produced.

Godzilla has performed millions of stunts that blows Kongs own right outta the water.

Example being: Survived, escaped & destroyed a black hole Regenerated from a beating heart Battled Rodan for over 12 hours Survived the Absolute Zero Cannon Lifted & threw Kaizer Ghidorah (who is 100,000 tones) Matched Thor's strength

Defeated 10 monsters in a row in Final Wars with judo wrestling and karate

I find it hilarious how people constantly point to this boogeyman "King Kong fanbase" like it has tremendous influence over films. There is no gigantic "Kong fanbase" out to ruin Godzilla, there's just extremely insecure paranoid Godzilla fans who can't stand the idea of Godzilla possibly fighting a giant ape who blame the very concept of Kong having a chance of winning on Kong's supposed "fanbase."

This is to Conder99. Your rant was nothing more than a fandom temper tantrum. First of your whole blacks hole theory and fighting 10 monsters theory at one time is irrelevant in this conversation for one main reason. The version that will be squaring off against King hasn't achieved either of things. King will be facing the (2014-2019) version if Godzilla! Not Shin Ryuken,Burning,Mellinum,or Space Godzilla. Lol!! It won't be against any variation but the most recent one. Secondly how many times gave we as people seen countless times that the alleged (ALL POWERFUL) be defeated by someone or something that is supposed to be inferior opposition. If You're familiar with these examples hopefully I can enlighten you. Liu Lang vs Shao Khan,in the 60's Godzilla vs mother's children, man and woman vs the 1st Terminator,Dutch vs the Predator,Perseus vs the Kracken,Rick O'Connel vs the Scorpion King,Goku vs Kid Buu,and one if my favorite Ricky Balboa vs Ivan Drago. Dragon's manager made the statement it is physically impossible for this little man to win,Drago is a look at the future and is the most perfectly trained athlete. He killed Apollo Creed in their exhibition bout. However when he fought Balboa he seemed to have the upper hand. Rocky was knocked down seemingly in every round throughout their fight. But who emerged victorious after it was all said and done?!! Button line no matter how extraordinary anyone or anything's powrers may seen history has taught us that they can fall just as hard as the alleged under achiever. If you haven't seen that theory ever proven I gave you some great references to research! So all of the surviving blacks holes and fighting multiple things means nothing in this scenario!

Before he can do any thing, a female M.U.T.O. kills it. then, the MUTO goes after him for a full 10 seconds being slapped in the face by Godzilla, who then kills the MUTO. Godzilla and Kong then fight until there's an earthquake, opening an underground chamber, through which many Skullcrawlers come out and attack Godzilla and Kong. They do well until MUTOS start arriving eventually the fight ends up in Tokyo. Soon Mothra arrives and eventually they kill the Skullcrawlers and the M.U.T.O.s. Then Kong swims back to Skull Island, Mothra goes back to wherever she came from, Godzilla goes back to the ocean. Then there's an post-credits scene that shows Mechagodzilla being made.
