Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II - Sons of Giants
Issue #4
In the 14th century, the powerful Mayan Empire (in present-day Guatemala) attributed its standing to Rodan, to whom they made daily human sacrifices. When Spanish conquistadors led by Fernando Suez enslaved the Mayans and forced them to mine for gold, they prayed to Rodan for salvation. After months, he answered, killing most of the conquistadors with shockwaves and his Uranium Heat Ray while crushing Suez underfoot. The Mayans rejoiced as Rodan departed.
Trivia
- Guatemala is indirectly mentioned through various map appearances in the Godzilla franchise.
- In Godzilla Singular Point, Rodan attacks are shown to be prevalent across Central America, including Guatemala.
- While Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II - Sons of Giants refers to the Mayans as the "Mayan Empire", the actual term used is the "Maya Civilization", since there existed numerous city-states across the Mayan lands with little centralization in the land.
- The description for the issue refers to the Mesoamerican peoples in the story as "Aztecs". In reality, the Aztec and Maya peoples were distinct civilizations with differing social structures and linguistic demarcations - notably, the Aztec Empire was centralized in central Mexico, while the Maya city-states spanned a wide area across southern Mexico, Guatemala, and other regions in Central America.
- Since the issue refers to the Maya city-states as the "Mayan Empire", it is likely that the authors confused the two entities, as the Aztec Empire was a real polity in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.
