Plot

In the homeland of the Tagu people, each year a ceremony was held in which the Tagu and their neighboring Atu would battle gargantuan apes called the Kong to win the favor of their gods, and to allow them to be granted protection through the Kongs. The representative of the Tagu people, Ewata had trained Kong to fight, but none of them won, which the competing princess Usana of the Atu nation blamed on her training them with love and respect rather than fear. Later, the Atu leader Prince K'reti brought the Tagu leader to the edge of a volcano called The Great Mouth, which was growing more active, and K'reti asked the Tagu for help if the volcano should erupt, but was refused until Ewata reminded them that both tribes were of the same blood, and they agreed to unite their people by marrying the Atu princess Usana to the Tagu prince K'reti to form the Tagu-Atu tribe. While at sea on the way to find grazing grounds for the Kong, Ewata was called up from where she slept near her female Kong called Valla, the captain called her to the deck to inform her that they had lost their course and ended up at Skull Island. Ewata informed the crew that Skull Island was a legendary island of great horrors, as accounted by feverish and wounded travelers who had survived it. Not deeming their accounts credible, Ewata urged them to go ashore to let the Kong graze. Before they made ground, they were attacked by five gargantuan Pteranodons.
