― Hank Marlow warning Houston Brooks and Lin San of Snarehunters (Kong: Skull Island)

Snarehunters are predatory insect monsters that were first alluded to in the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island, and later appeared in the 2023 tabletop roleplaying game Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure.

Name

The Snarehunters are also "commonly known" as Singing Ants.[1] Monarch gives them the cryptozoological classification Cantus formica,[1] a combination of the Latin words for "singing" and "ant," respectively.

By contrast, Snarehunter Queens are classified as Cantus Silva Ant,[1] incorporating silva, the Latin word for "forest." Like the Skull Devils, which Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure establish to be formally designated Alpha Skullcrawlers,[1] "Snarehunter Queen" is a common name rather than a formal one. However, the creature's bio in the game book erroneously lists its Monarch designation as "Alpha Skullcrawler,"[1] thus making its true designation unclear, though it is possible that "Alpha Snarehunter" was intended.

Design

Neither the Snarehunters nor their Queens are depicted in Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure, with Hank Marlow describing them only as "Ants. Big ones." in Kong: Skull Island. However, a Snarehunter Queen was pictured on a discarded cover for the Cinematic Adventure, in which it resembled a giant winged ant with three body segments, six legs, and tree branch-like structures in place of antennae and across its wings.

Behavior

Monarch categorizes the behavior of Snarehunter Queens as that of a "protector," similar to such Titans as Godzilla, Mothra, and Kong. Queens are rarely seen outside of their nests, only emerging if their hive is destroyed or they are faced by a significant threat.[1]
