During an attack by Destoroyah on the Zone 8 Kaiju Defense Force Research Facility, Doctor Brian Anders was forced by a Colonel Matsumiya to utilize a device he created called the G-Signaler to summon Godzilla to fight Destoroyah off. The device failed to summon "Kaiju Alpha", and Destroyah destroyed the base and killed Matsumiya in the process. Major Samantha Tagger tried to free Matsumiya, but was forced to abandon him on his orders. As they fled the building, they heard the distant roar of Anguirus, whom Anders assured Tagger had no chance of defeating Destoroyah. Anguirus charged at Destoroyah, who put him into a choke hold with his tail. Tagger then steered a plane into the fray to aid Anguirus, whom she felt was being bullied by the more powerful monster. This drew Destoroyah's fire from Anguirus and onto them. They then decided to lure Destoroyah into some tanks of Freon in order to freeze it, one of the only recorded means of stopping it. Anders then tried to rework his G-Signaler to repel Desoroyah. It only disoriented it, but Matsumiya, who had freed himself and gotten into the last remaining helicopter in time to hear Anders' plan about the Freon tanks, and used the chopper's tow cable to bring the tank down on Destoroyah. When it thawed it returned to the ocean, and Matsumiya congratulated Anders for developing a device to repel kaiju. As Anguirus crossed the bay to head into the open ocean, Godzilla arose, but passed up Anguirus to attack the base.

"The Underdog" is the first issue of Godzilla: Legends. It was released on November 16, 2011.

Description

The Legends begin here! Presenting the first of five spotlight issues, each of which explore a self-contained story centering on one of Godzilla's fearsome foes! In this tale, drawn and co-written by Godzilla superstar artist Matt Frank, Anguirus, the armadillo-esque perpetual underdog, goes toe-to-toe with one of the most devastating monsters of all time - Destroyah! It's a classic tale of David vs. Goliath...monster style!

Plot

During an attack by Destoroyah on the Zone 8 Kaiju Defense Force Research Facility, Doctor Brian Anders was forced by Colonel Matsumiya to utilize a device he created called the G-Signaler to summon Godzilla to fight Destoroyah off. Anguirus charged at Destoroyah, who put him into a choke hold with its tail. It only disoriented it, but Matsumiya, who had freed himself and gotten into the last remaining helicopter in time to hear Anders' plan about the Freon tanks, used the chopper's tow cable to bring the tank down on Destoroyah. When it thawed, it returned to the ocean, and Matsumiya congratulated Anders for developing a device to repel kaiju. As Anguirus crossed the bay to head into the open ocean, Godzilla arose, but passed up Anguirus to attack the base.
