Doug
|
Doug is a large predatory reptile who briefly appears in the 2021 MonsterVerse film Godzilla vs. Kong. He is a member of an unnamed species that lives in the Hollow Earth.
Name
The Godzilla vs. Kong audio description calls Doug Foetodon, a species from the 2005 King Kong remake by Universal Pictures, which has no affiliation with the MonsterVerse.[4][5] The film's novelization simply calls his species "lizard-like monsters," while Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall - The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale calls them "Scaly Quadrupeds." Doug started as a popular nickname among fans,[6] but was then embraced by director Adam Wingard, the Legendary Pictures Twitter and Instagram accounts,[7][8], an official T-shirt,[3] and the metaverse platform Virtua.[9] The T-shirt calls him Titanus Doug and Virtua calls his species Titanous Doug. However, it is unclear whether Monarch will assign him this designation in-universe, as he is dwarfed by most other Titans.
Design
Doug's species is rotund in physique with large, amber-colored eyes and short legs. Their osteoderms are also more jagged in shape, and somewhat resemble those found on the Hellhawks, another species inhabiting the Hollow Earth. The Virtua NFT of the creature shows that it has two rows of spikes running down its tail, ending in a heavily spiked tip.[10] They have thick, crocodile-like skin, which acts as armor against the many other threats in Hollow Earth.[10]
Origins
Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard asked that Doug's species resemble Godzilla, although Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall - The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale does not confirm an evolutionary link.[11]
History
MonsterVerse
Godzilla vs. Kong
As Rock Critters scattered in Kong's wake, Doug seized the opportunity, snatching up one crab in its jaws. Eight more members of his species steered clear of Kong as he continued running.
Abilities
Physical abilities
Doug easily caught a Rock Critter in his jaws and crushed it. His species uses their tails as clubs to kill smaller creatures that irritate them.[12]
