"King for a Day" is the sixteenth issue of Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. It was released on September 24, 2014.

Description

Godzilla comes face-to-face with his deadliest opponent yet! The end game of the series' most conniving foe reaches its zenith. Will Godzilla be able to survive the day? And will the Earth want him to? The stunning climax to this four-part story is here.

Plot

Near the Dyachenko Offensive Robotics and Technology Facility in Russia, Chavez helps Lucy Casprell out of their downed helicopter after it was shot out of the sky by a pair of Rhizon's Mechagodzillas. Lucy tells Chavez that their team might be the only survivors, with Chavez replying that Kiryu's tracking device should notify their allies where they are. However, without pilots, they aren't moving. As Lucy reunites with Kristina Sumres, Jason Ford asks if Anguirus is still alive. Chavez tells him that he'll check on the other helicopters before making his way up to Kiryu and Anguirus as he and Jason search for a med kit. However, they're suddenly ambushed by a group of Russian Spetsnaz soldiers.

Back on the Cryog ship, Minette and Mallory notify Rhizon that the remaining Mechagodzillas have returned to base before asking what his next request is. Rhizon makes a bad joke about them not being able to read his mind before stating that their psychic powers are barely able to control a human mind, let alone his. He explains how when the twins first met him when disguised as Dyachenko, they were unable to control his mind like they could with humans. However, they did have the same goal in mind: conquest of the planet and Godzilla. The twins contributed by showing him the body of King Ghidorah. However, due to its injured state, they needed to rebuild it. Rhizon had Gigan decapitate Ghidorah's middle head so that they can build Mecha-King Ghidorah. Rhizon tells the twins that Gigan is too valuable for a battle like this, but his technology and the twins' brains make "the perfect match". The twins state that he needs them to keep the charade going and that his technology is stolen before Rhizon reminds them that they're rulers, and rulers need to conquer. What the twins call stolen technology, he calls spoils of victory. Not even what's left of the Cryogs know where he is and he chose to keep the twins alive, which is they they need him. He asks them to focus on killing Godzilla, to which the twins comply. He has the twins put on helmets to interface with Mecha-King Ghidorah as he activates the "arena" with antennas.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Steven Woods finally finds a signal for his phone and has his call to the higher-ups in Washington DC on hold. He rhetorically asks Allie why he left to work in DC, with the young girl telling the former soldier that it's not like him to not be able to fight the higher ups even though he's fought giant monsters. Woods laments that he's a glutton for punishment or that he just works with very difficult people as his call gets through. He asks why Senator Payne is still in Russia, what happened in Dyachenko's facility, and who authorized the senator's visit. He tells the higher ups that if Kiryu's beacon is on, then his team is still there and that they should be top priority rather than Payne. After the call is cut short, Woods tells Allie that he needs to get situated as his friends are in danger. Allie tells him to help them, as that's what he's always done since he found her. Woods tells her that he's in the dark as to what his team is doing in Russia and that they're as far out of sight as possible. Allie tells him that as long as her dorm is still standing, she'll be fine, and that she'll help out with the relief effort. Woods tells her to call him when she gets situated as they say goodbye to each other, with Allie telling him to "never give up".

Back in Russia, Godzilla tries to break free from Mecha-King Ghidorah's machine hand, only to be blasted by a Gravity Beam to the head. Rhizon tells the controlling twins to soften Godzilla up, but not to kill him. The cybernetic dragon drops Godzilla directly onto the facility. The Spetsnaz leader asks what that sound could be, to which Lucy and Kristina reply that it could be Godzilla. The leader tells the CKR team to wait under guard with Kiryu as they investigate. Chavez tells the leader that if they have a monster problem, they'll need his team's help. The Spetsnaz tells them to worry about Anguirus before they come across a badly damaged Kiryu with Anguirus walking off in the distance. As the Spetsnaz is baffled on how Anguirus could escape, Chavez tells him that they'll get a lift home before advising him to "stay out of Anguirus's way". As a massive explosion is seen in the facility, the Spetsnaz leader tells the CKR team to stay where they are as they investigate the battle. Meanwhile, Rhizon chastises the twins for not waiting until he could watch Godzilla's death, but they tell him that they're either losing control of Mecha-King Ghidorah or that they never had control to begin with.

Mecha-King Ghidorah stomps on Godzilla's neck before kicking him towards the pair of Mechagodzillas, who bring him back to his feet as he's blasted by the dragon's Gravity Beams. Godzilla retaliates by slamming one of the Mechagodzillas into Mecha-King Ghidorah with his tail. The King of Monsters bites into Mecha-King Ghidorah's mechanical head as he tackles the cyborg to the ground. Before Godzilla can finish the cyborg with his atomic breath, however, one of the Mechagodzillas smacks him in the face and holds him down, allowing Mecha-King Ghidorah to bite into his neck, arm, and leg before throwing him to the ground. Godzilla fires his atomic breath at the dragon but misses and hits one of the antennas, causing the twins to bleed from their eyes and compromising their control of the dragon. Rhizon demands them to get back to work before Godzilla destroys the remaining control antennas, rendering the twins unconscious. Mecha-King Ghidorah, now free of the twins' control, smacks Godzilla to the ground before unleashing its Gravity Beams on the surrounding area. Suddenly, Anguirus arrives and, after acknowledging Godzilla, pounces on one of the Mechagodzillas and destroys it. The King of the Monsters lands a hit on Mecha-King Ghidorah's wing with his atomic breath, damaging it. As the cybernetic dragon takes flight, Godzilla dodges the remaining Mechagodzilla's Finger Missiles before slamming him into Mecha-King Ghidorah with his tail, knocking the cyborg out of the sky. Godzilla then proceeds to grab Anguirus by the tail and uses him as a club to bludgeon Mecha-King Ghidorah. The cyborg tries to grab Godzilla with its mechanical hands, only for the King of Monsters to trick the cyborg into grabbing the remaining Mechagodzilla as it flies off. Rhizon laments this defeat as he's notified that armored human forces are approaching from the east. Rhizon orders for an evacuation as they'll rendezvous in space. When asked what to do with the twins, Rhizon tells his subordinate to leave them as they are of no more use to him. As Rhizon orders for his forces to get far from this planet, Godzilla destroys the remaining Mechagodzilla with his atomic breath as the damaged Mecha-King Ghidorah retreats into space. Godzilla and Anguirus both roar victoriously before the former destroys the facility once and for all.

Meanwhile, Chavez manages to get into contact with Woods, who tells his friend that AC-3 backup and a recovery team are headed to their position. Woods won't be joining them as he's still looking for answers. When asked how the CKR team is doing, Chavez reports that the temp shelters have been set up and that the facility has been completely destroyed. Woods tells Chavez that he's lucky they didn't get shot immediately by the Spetsnaz, though they might want to now since they're from the same country as Senator Payne. Chavez asks when they can bring Woods back on the team after being gone for so long, with Woods noting to himself that maybe he and Godzilla are alike in that "trouble always finds them" as he reads a newspaper about the attack in Boston.
