The Rival is a giant ape Titan that appears in Godzilla: Dominion. An ancient Kong individual that Godzilla remembered from his past, The Rival was the Titan responsible for kicking Godzilla out of one of his old lairs, which he claimed as his own. The Rival took residence in Godzilla’s former lair for so long, that he killed various titans that attempted to claim it for themselves, even a MUTO Prime individual.[2] However, that ended at some point after the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when the serpentine Titan, Tiamat, made her presence in his home. The Rival was subsequently killed by Tiamat, who seemed to have devoured his corpse down to the bone as inferred when Godzilla came upon his skull.

Design

The Rival is mostly identical to Kong as an adult, but with some distinct differences. His fur is incredibly short in comparison and covers up his abdomen slightly more. The same areas of his being are exposed, though they are much more naked than that of Kong’s, showcasing his dark grey skin greatly. Along with bearing many battle scars on his torso and arms, the Rival has a patch of exposed skin on his right arm. His face and mouth are wider than that of Kong’s. His eyes appear to be incredibly bloodshot in the panels that depict them.

Origins

It is unknown to what extent the Rival was involved in the conflict between his species and Godzilla’s, but it is known that this individual existed when Godzilla was younger.

History

Godzilla: Dominion

At some point in Godzilla’s distant past, the Rival made an appearance before Godzilla with the intent of claiming the other Titan’s lair as his own. Through unknown means, The Rival triumphed in the territorial dispute, forcing Godzilla to search for a new residence. During his time living in Godzilla’s former, the Rival protected his claim from other Titans, killing all that attempted to. His existence came to an unfortunate end sometime after the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters when the serpentine Titan, Tiamat, appeared. The unseen battle ended with the Rival’s death and Tiamat’s claim of the lair, after which, she devoured his corpse. Sometime later in 2021, Godzilla himself came to an unknown location on the planet’s surface far above his former lair. He roared in challenge to claim the lair as his own once more, expecting to face the Rival. Instead, it was Tiamat that Godzilla fought and reclaimed his lair from. Godzilla had sensed something off about the Rival until he found the skull of his ancient enemy.

Abilities

Physical abilities

Up until Tiamat challenged him for occupancy of the lair, the Rival had slain every Titan that had also challenged him, discarding their bodies into the ocean on the surface world. One of these Titans was, in fact, a MUTO Prime individual, further showcasing the Rival‘s strength and combat prowess. His most impressive feat, however, comes in the form of defeating Godzilla himself.

Weaknesses

Whether it was due to aging or some other reason, the Rival was defeated and killed by Tiamat. It appears that the reason behind his triumph over Godzilla revolved around the latter’s young level of maturity or state of being at the time.
