Mysterious Bones
|
The Mystery Bones of Infant Island (インファント島の怪骨 is a turtle skeleton created by Infanto-jima no kai kotsu)Toho that first appeared in the 1964 Godzilla film, Mothra vs. Godzilla.
Name
The official name for Skeleturtle, "Mystery Bones of Infant Island," is a translation of the name for the creature found on an officially licensed 2012 toy of it,[1][2] which reads "Infanto-jima no kai kotsu." Skeleturtle is a fanmade nickname[3] before the official name was known. Officially licensed t-shirts featuring Skeleturtle that were sold in Japan refer to the creature in English as "Infant Island's Kai Kotsu."
Appearance
Skeleturtle is purely white and gray, with black eyes, and a bland, pale shell with no visible scutes. It has a fairly long neck, and very short limbs, which have tiny bone fragments visible.
Origins
In the context of the film, Skeleturtle's direct origins are unknown.
The bones were included on Infant Island as a reference to a popular 1962 Italian documentary entitled "Mondo cane" (A Dog's Life). "Mondo cane" contains a large number of documented atrocities to nature and animals including turtles on the radioactive contaminated Bikini atoll beaches which are dead or dying which shows the continued fallout from the nuclear tests. The dried bones move in the wind, which are reflected in skeleturtle's movement in Mothra vs. Godzilla
