Nerscylla (ネルスキュラ,   Nerusukyura) are arachnid monsters featured in the 2020 film, Monster Hunter. They are based on the monster species of the same name from the Capcom Monster Hunter video game franchise.

Name

Nerscylla is named after the Mesopotamian god of plague and war, Nergal, and Neoscona Scylla, the scientific name of an of orb-weaver spider which in of itself was named after a sea monster from greek mythology.[2]

Personality

Nerscylla are nocturnal ambush predators who are hunt in swarms. Even though they are aggressive, they become immediately frightened by sunlight.

Design

Nerscylla resemble arachnids such as spiders at first glance. However, they only have six limbs, four legs and two forelimbs that resemble the forelimbs of mantids. They also possess multiple spikes on their back and an abdominal stinger.

There are multiple differences between Nerscylla, such as the arrangement of the spikes on their back. Other differences include, some being draped in a coating that appears to be the skin from other creatures, while most of the Nerscylla have black heads with black eyes, an individual Nerscylla appears with a pale white head with blue eyes, their heads have large fangs on its top jaw and a bottom jaw that splits in half to create mandibles.

History

Monster Hunter

After escaping from a Black Diablos, Artemis, and her squadron had only a moment to catch their breath before they were attacked by a Nerscylla. The giant insect grabbed Artemis with its forelimbs before stabbing her with its abdominal stinger, injecting its venom into her and knocking her out. Lincoln shot it in its eye, making it release the unconscious Artemis. As the other soldiers started firing upon the monster, it retreated. While trying to treat Artemis, more Nerscylla arrived to attack the soldiers, causing them to retreat and leave Artemis behind. As the soldiers were being chased by the Nerscylla, the Hunter watched the swarm move into the canyon from afar. He then fired explosives at the swarm, killing two Nerscylla. A group from the swarm took notice of the hunter and turned their attention to him, causing him to run. After helping Dash up after she fell, Marshall is then lifted into the air by a Nerscylla's webs. After a futile attempt to break free, he is killed after having his head crushed in the jaws of the Nerscylla. While the remaining soldiers keep running, the Hunter blocks the Nerscylla out of his hideout after dropping down a spiked door. Artemis wakes up, only to come face-to-face with a Nerscylla, who then uses its stinger to spray webbing on her and cocoon her.

Artemis wakes up in the Nerscylla's nest and escapes from her cocoon. She discovers the hanging corpse of Dash and the dog tag of Marshall. After getting materials from one of the soldiers' bags, she lit a flare and found Nerscylla eggs, as well as a still alive Lincoln, who had chest pains. They then proceeded through the nest, unknowing of the Nerscylla following them. After finding out that they are near an exit, Artemis set off a flare to try and see what is happening to Lincoln. It is then revealed that a Nerscylla had followed them. To make matters worse, multiple boils had appeared on Lincoln's body, which then proceeded to burst with Nerscylla hatchlings crawling out of them. The Nerscylla then grabs the wounded man and feeds him to its other larger offspring. When another Nerscylla tried to attack Artemis, she proceeded to set the monsters aflame with her flare and spray. While one proceeded to squirm around, another continued after her. Artemis runs away from the arachnid and narrowly reaches the exit of the nest, only to be dragged back in. After getting a wound on her leg, Artemis proceeded to throw her remaining bullets onto the flaming Nerscylla, setting the bullets off and making small explosions. While the Nerscylla was distracted by the explosions, Artemis made her way through the exit and into the daylight. She had only a chance to catch her breath as the Nerscylla swarm revealed themselves, Artemis tried to run only for the wound on her leg to stop her. The Nerscylla swarm then proceeded to try and catch Artemis, only for them to immediately retreat after being exposed to sunlight.

After teaming up the Hunter, Artemis and the Hunter set a trap to catch a Nerscylla. After Artemis lured one out of the nest and into the trap, a rope was wrapped around its leg to restrain it. After being immobilized, the Nerscylla attempted to stab Artemis with its legs. The Hunter, who was propped atop a rock, jumped down at the monster and used his large Great Sword to cut the monster's head in half. After cutting off and grabbing the stinger, Artemis and the Hunter proceeded to flee as the other Nerscylla came out to attack, escaping the swarm just in time.

Abilities

Stinger venom

Nerscylla can release venom from their stingers that is potent enough to immediately knock out a human.

Web

Nerscylla can also shoot webbing from their stingers. They use their webbing to build their hives and to cocoon their victims.

Swarm

Nerscylla hunts in hordes and use their numbers to swarm their targets.

Physical capabilities

Nerscylla use their large mandibles to eat their prey. Their mandibles are strong enough that they can crush a human's head. Their carapace is strong enough to protect them from bullets.

Reproduction

Nerscylla Appear to have two methods of reproduction. The first method is laying a cluster of eggs, wrapped in a cocoon like growth that hangs from the ceiling of the hive. The second method is parasitic, they will lay their eggs inside of a victim, this will then lead to pain and boils to appear on the victim’s body, the hatchlings will then burst out from the boils and proceed to feed on the victim’s body.

Weaknesses

Nerscylla are shown to have multiple weaknesses. Due to having a nocturnal lifestyle, they do not like light enough to the point they will give up on trying to catch easy prey. They also appear to be harmed by fire as after Artemis sprayed them with fire, most of the Nerscylla proceeded to panic and squirm. Despite their durable carapaces, Nerscylla are still somewhat vulnerable to bullets, as shown when Lincoln blinded one with shots to the eyes. A Nerscylla easily had its head sliced in half after the Hunter jumped down at it with the oversized blade of his Great Sword. Nerscylla are also susceptible to explosions as seen when the hunter was able to kill two with explosives that were attached to an arrow and when gunpowder from thrown bullets were set off by one's flaming hide. A Nerscylla was stopped after it set off the trap Artemis and the hunter set up.

Trivia

  • Nerscylla coincidentally shares its namesake with the another arachnid-like monster, the MonsterVerse Titan Scylla.
