(WORK IN PROGRESS)

Anguirus (アンギラス,   Angirasu) is a juveline Anklyosaurus kaiju who first appeared in the 1984 Godzilland merchandise line.

Name

Anguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス), comes from the Japanese spelling of the name of the dinosaur genus Ankylosaurus (アンキロサウルス,   Ankirosaurusu), upon which the monster's design is based. The name was chosen from several names proposed by employees of Toho during production of Godzilla Raids Again.

Design

This Anguirus is displayed in a super-deformed "chibi" style, with a short, rounded body with no defined neck, a bipedal or quadrupedal build, a bright orange spiky carapace with yellow spikes and a very large head and eyes. His skin is entirely blue in color, which is changed to an orange or yellow color in his earlier appearances and in later appearances, can be either pale or dark blue. Interestingly, the horn on Anguirus's face is instead potrayed as a visible nose-like thing instead, being merged with his mouth and the same color as the rest of his body.

In his first appearance, in the 1984 Godzilland merchandise line, Anguirus was potrayed as a yellow (sometimes orange), small quadrupedalic creature with no visible carapace that had bright pink spikes on it. This Anguirus's head horns were also interestingly merged with his headshape, not being potrayed as horns at all. He also had no visible claws and a more curved mouth, and his tail is completely spikeless except for the sides near the tip of his tail.

When this Anguirus was brought back for the animated segments of the 1993 variety show Adventure! Godzilland 2, Anguirus's design was heavily revamped. He was now potrayed as a larger, semi-bipedal and semi-quadrupedal Anklyosaurus, with a now visible large spikier carapace and a much spikier tail. His several inclined horns were also seperated from his headshape. This Anguirus was also now completely blue in color, much like his appearance in Godzilla Raids Again and later in Godzilla Final Wars. He also now had visible claws, with them being pale yellow or entirely white in color.

In the first two episodes of the Get Going! Godzilland OVAs, released in 1994, Anguirus's design stayed more or less the same, except now being almost completely bipedal. In the traditional animated segments at the beginning and end of the first two episodes, Anguirus is much duller and brighter in color, being a sort of pale blue, however, in the more vibrantly-animated educational segments, Anguirus was colored a more vibrant, deep blue. His appearance in the addition and subtraction OVAs, released in 1996, like the other kaiju his design was slightly altered for a refresh. This Anguirus is now entirely mid blue in color, staying the same throughout the episode. He was now also fully bipedal and slighty less hunched. Anguirus does not appear in the live-action segments, and is instead only potrayed as his child form.

Personality

This depiction of Anguirus, like most of the other characters in the series, is portrayed as a childish monster. Anguirus is usually on the receiving end of slapstick, making him clumsy and prone to accidentally injuring himself, mostly inspired by his bad luck in the movies that he features in. He and other kaiju are both best friends, caring for each other and having fun in various ways, such as one of them throwing a surprise birthday party for another. However, him and Godzilla both frequently get into fights, although they are able to overcome these fights.

History

Heisei era

Godzilland (merchandise line)

Anguirus was one of the many other kaiju seen in the Godzilland merchandise line drawn in a chibi artstyle, featuring in many of the franchise's items. Anguirus is potrayed as a friend of Godzilla and other kaiju, and is seen living with them together. Various artwork of Anguirus shows him in a field, cheering on Minilla with Rodan and the Mothra larvae and looking together with Moguera and Hedorah at something. Anguirus is also shown in the bootlegged merchandise, in some of the same positions as in the genuine merchandise line, however other artwork shows him being kicked up into the air by Godzilla's tail and being bitten by Godzilla himself in the tail. Like many of the other kaiju in the merchandise line, Anguirus is usually potrayed in the same few renders.

Adventure! Godzilland 2

Anguirus was one of the many kaiju featured in the animated segments of Adventure! Godzilland 2, now potrayed in his most recognizable design. He is also potrayed in the intro.

Get Going! Godzilland

"You Can Read! You Can Write! Hiragana!"

Anguirus was running through one of the forests of Godzilland when Mothra arrived, dropping an invitation to a picnic onto his head, blinding him. He then ran into a rock, tripping and falling onto his carapace, struggling for a moment. He then lay down flat, blowing on the invitation, lifting it up into the air. While being later chased by Godzilla, who was fighting with him and firing his atomic breath towards him, Anguirus accidentally stumbled accross the picnic that Mothra was hosting, which was already attented by Baragon, Rodan and King Ghidorah. When the two both found out that they had already ate all of the strawberries that Mothra was preparing for them, the two were shocked and accused the others of being "heartless". After being confronted about the envelope, Godzilla tearfully confessed that he couldn't read, with Anguirus following shortly after. After Ghidorah consoled Godzilla and offered him to learn the Hiragana alphabet, Godzilla decided to do so along with Anguirus.

"You Can Count! Counting 1-2-3!"

Anguirus decided to plan a birthday party for his best friend Godzilla, as the two cared for each other very well. Anguirus prepared tea and cake for the birthday party, with Rodan smelling the cakes and flying over, suggesting he could eat some, with Anguirus getting mad at this, saying that the party hadn't started yet. When the party started, Anguirus wished a happy birthday to Godzilla, with everybody cheering, and announced it was time to eat. However, he miscounted, and accidentally gave the last one to Rodan instead of Godzilla. Godzilla became very upset over this and began angrily crying, with Anguirus being shocked that he had made his own best friend cry. He then realized his mistakes of making only 5 cakes when there were 6 attendants to the party, apologizing to Godzilla and giving his own cake to Godzilla. When he did this, however, Ghidorah appeared and asked for more cake. When the three Ghidorah heads got into an argument about which head owned the cake, Anguirus got very stressed and worried, not knowing how many heads Ghidorah had. Mothra then reappeared, consoling Anguirus, telling him that she brought extra cakes just in case something would go wrong. After Godzilla asked Mothra to teach them how to count, Anguirus joined in. At the end of the party segment, Anguirus is seen happily impaling Godzilla with his carapace.

At the end of the episode, Godzilla writes a letter to Mothra. It tells her that Anguirus and Baragon were arguing on who got to go onto the swing. When they couldn't come to a conclusion, the two other kaiju suggested that they play a game of ladder lottery (a common descision-making game in Japan).
