Snow Godzilla (雪の (ユキノ),   ゴジラ, Yuki no Gojira), or simply Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is a kaiju who appears in the 2019 animated film, Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Movie. It is the third incarnation of Godzilla to appear in a feature-length animated film, after Godzilla Filius and Godzilla Earth from the GODZILLA anime trilogy.

Name

See also: Godzilla#Name.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Development

Snow Godzilla was designed and modelled by Takuya Uenishi, who created the fan film G vs. G for a Godzilla-themed contest put on by GEMSTONE, a partnership between Toho and AlphaBoat which came out among the first-prize winners, leading to the greenlighting of the Toho-backed sequel Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex. Though Snow Godzilla appears incredibly similar to the Godzilla featured in G vs. G and subsequent Godzilla Fest short films, it is unclear whether the same CG model was modified or a new one was made from scratch.

Design

Snow Godzilla overall appears extremely identical to GEMSTONE’s Godzilla from his debut short-film. Like his 2016 live-action counterpart, when he charges his atomic breath, he uses a nictitating membrane on his eyes during the utilization of his atomic breath. His eyes possess yellow irises and a black sclera. The outline of his dorsal plates are blue in addition to baring a texture identical to ice and snow, while the rest of his entire being is covered in white patches that resemble snow, hence the name. As such, he is heavily reminiscent of Burning Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

History

Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Movie

Snow Godzilla’s first appearance

Godzilla appears at the beginning of the film, in which he encountered Miku Hatsune in an icy environment near Konbu Tunnel. When he noticed her, he knocked her to the ground with his ice breath. Sometime later, the Hayato family would bare witness to Godzilla suddenly appearing at the Niyama Plateau Ski Resort, during which, the military fired a capture field to contain Godzilla. Hayato and his father engaged Godzilla in their Shinkalions, but Godzilla proved impossible for them to defeat. Godzilla proceeded to fire his atomic breath at Hayato, which his father attempted to save him from, but his efforts resulting in him being reverted back into his youth. In the aftermath, Godzilla had disappeared and never reappeared until the battle finale of the film. Godzilla, lacking the memories of his battles with the Shinkalions, joined them and Shinji Ikari in their fight against Valdor at the Tokyo Station Central Counterattack System. After Valdor’s defeat, Godzilla and Shinji both disappear, while Hayato's father wakes up and reunites with his family.

Abilities

Snow Godzilla firing his atomic breath

Atomic Breath

Snow Godzilla possesses the trademark atomic breath. Unlike past depictions of the breath attack, which were generally either a blast of radioactive fire or a concentrated beam of radiation and/or energy, Snow Godzilla’s atomic breath is partially composed of Glowing Particles. As such, Snow Godzilla’s atomic breath possesses some space-time affecting properties and seems to trap its target upon contact.

Ice Breath

Snow Godzilla’s ice beam

Snow Godzilla can project a beam from his mouth that consists of ice shards that obscured Miku's Shinkansen's vision.

Physical Abilities

Snow Godzilla’s tail is very powerful, sending a Shinkansen flying with one swipe. In addition, Snow Godzilla possesses quick reflexes. Snow Godzilla's tail is very flexible, striking a Shinkansen with great precision and finesse.

Durability

Snow Godzilla can withstand massive explosive weapons being fired down upon him by the Shinkansen. He also isn't affected by the Shinkansen Sword.

Regeneration

Snow Godzilla possesses some degree of regenerative abilities.

Weather Manipulation

Snow Godzilla was concealed in a thick blizzard during his first appearance. In the subsequent times that Snow Godzilla appeared, his presence seemed to have manipulated the air in the surrounding environment into producing a snowstorm around himself.

Snow Godzilla teleporting

Teleportation

Snow Godzilla is capable of some form of teleportation, which involves energy that are akin to the black particles. He first demonstrated this ability immediately after using his Ice Breath during his battle with Miku. Snow Godzilla completely lacks control over this teleportation as the phenomenon is a result of the Glowing Particles, which was the reason for him suddenly appearing in the Shinkalions’ universe on three occasions.

Glowing Particles

Snow Godzilla’s appearances in the movie, as well as some of his abilities, revolve around the Glowing Particles. These particles are essential elements of the Valhallan civilization, a civilization originating from the Shinkalion franchise. They are capable of teleporting things through space-time. They are the cause of Snow Godzilla’s teleportation and are in fact part of the composition of the monster’s atomic breath.

Weaknesses

Snow Godzilla completely lacks any control over the Glowing Particles, only making an appearance in the Shinkalion's dimension due to the particles teleporting him there. On a second note, Snow Godzilla doesn't determine the effects of the Glowing Particles in his atomic breath, only utilizing the weapon for inflicting damage. Aside from that, Snow Godzilla's memories of his two encounters with the Shinkansens were erased towards his last appearance due to the effects of the Glowing Particles.

Roar

This Godzilla reuses the Showa Godzilla roars. Though there is no official statement of Snow Godzilla’s roar regarding its volume, it was loud enough to rattle the Shinkansen.
