Gigan Rex (ガイガンレクス Gaigan Rekusu) is an alien kaiju who first appeared in the 2022 3D-animated Godzilla short film Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex.
Name
Gigan's Japanese name, Gaigan, was derived from a nickname for actor Yujiro Ishihara, "nice guy" (ナイスガイ naisu gai), combined with the word for goose, gan (雁); both were influences on Gigan's design in his visor and body shape, respectively.[1] The name may have also been chosen as a contraction of "geiger counter," spelled in Japanese as ガイガーカウンター (gaigā kauntā).[2] Rex is the Latin word for "king", also evoking the theropod dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex.

Gigan Rex appears largely similar to the character's design in the short film, only with a more detailed chest and with coloring alteration; his skin is red instead of green, a dark grey over some parts of his body instead of golden and magenta on his visor instead of red. It lacks the buzzsaw of its subordinates, replacing it with a giant eye hidden in its chest.

After Godzilla made quick work of the first Gigan Miles squadron, Gigan Rex lands behind him. He roars before extending its segmented forelimbs and whipping Godzilla. After this proves mostly ineffective, Gigan Rex opens an eye hidden in his chest and fires a powerful beam into his opponent, knocking him off of his feet. As Godzilla fires his atomic breath in retaliation, Gigan Rex quickly dodges into the air and slashes at Godzilla with his extended Rex Blades. Godzilla uses this attack against this opponent as he grabs the weapons and pulls Gigan Rex closer. He attempts to stabilize himself with his tail spike, only to be interrupted as Godzilla smashes his tail into Gigan Rex at full force. Gigan Rex blocks another blast of atomic breath, calling in reinforcements using his forehead aperture. As the summoned Gigan Miles pile on top of Godzilla and attack him with their unsheathed buzzsaws, Godzilla begins to glow bright white before unleashing a newfound power and wiping them out with ease. Gigan Rex kills his remaining subordinates and takes their cores to power himself up. Now positioned with his Rex Blades and the cores around him, Gigan Rex fires a crimson beam that collides with an especially-powerful atomic breath from Godzilla. This results in a beamburst, killing Gigan Rex while leaving Godzilla unscathed.
Abilities
Rex blades
Gigan Rex's forelimbs sport a pair of large metal hooks, which he can use to batter and stab opponents. These digits can extend into whip-like saws when needed.
Chest eye
The eye inside of Gigan Rex's chest is capable of firing a powerful yellow laser, thicker than its brethren. This beam can be powered up by absorbing energy from the cores of Gigan Miles, becoming a harsh red and more concentrated.
Tail spike
Gigan Rex's tail spike can split in two. It used this to great effect, temporarily stabilizing its movement after an attack from Godzilla.
Communication
Gigan Rex's forehead aperture can be utilized to call for Gigan Miles to come to its aid.
