Ares is the god of war in Ancient Greek religion and mythology. He appears in IDW Publishing's 2016 Godzilla comic Godzilla: Rage Across Time #2. When he and his fellow olympians’ worshippers mysteriously renounce their faith and engage in a massive war, Ares and the other gods indulge in argument regarding their course of reaction until their own egos become their deaths at the hands of Godzilla. Ares himself was the first Olympian after Poseidon to be killed by Godzilla, jumping down towards the monster from Mount Olympus, only to be erased from existence by Godzilla’s atomic breath.
Design
Ares is a muscular humanoid with brown hair in a Viking-like mohawk in addition to facial hair. He wears golden armor plating on his torso, his arms exposed and equipped with golden wristbands, a brown leather battle skirt that covers most of his thighs, a red full-length cape, brown gauze on his lower legs and feet with his toes exposed, and brown sandals.
Personality
As the god of war, Ares is renowned for his aggression and battle-hardened nature, displaying an eagerness towards inflicting violence or starting conflicts that tend to be unnecessary. Like fellow Olympian Zeus, Ares has a massive ego and high degree of arrogance, though he has shown to be rational at least more so then Zeus. Ultimately, his title-sake nature became his demise when he jumped down towards Godzilla in an attempted attack, unable to finish a sentence or even strike a blow of his axe before being instantaneously disintegrated by the creature’s atomic breath.
History
Godzilla: Rage Across Time #2
After a war broke out unbeknownst to Ares and the other Olympians, an unknown entity destroyed both armies, causing Hermes, the messenger god to inform them all of the crisis and to plan a course of action. Zeus however, did not care that the mortals were gone, and in fact resented them for their turning away from the gods and stopping their prayers and sacrifices. Along with his sister Aphrodite, Ares proposed to his father, Zeus, a means of regaining their renounced worshippers, Ares’ being rather violent and aggressive. (TBA)
Abilties
Strength
Though never demonstrated in the comic, Ares possesses great strength.
Battle Strategy
As the god of war, it is natural that Ares’ expertise and talents fall on warfare and violence, which though never demonstrated in the comic, include battle strategy and combat tactics.
Axe
Ares wields a large double-bladed axe, which he had attempted to attack Godzilla with in his final moments.
Weaknesses
Despite being a god, Ares is neither above pain or death. He was destroyed with just one blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath.
