The King Ghidorah (キングギドラ,   Kingu Gidora) from the GODZILLA anime trilogy is an incarnation of King Ghidorah that is first mentioned in the 2018 animated Godzilla film GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle, and is set to appear in the film's sequel, GODZILLA: Planet Eater.

Name

King Ghidorah's name is composed of "King" (キング,   Kingu) and "Ghidorah." The "Ghidorah" part of King Ghidorah's name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒドラ,   Hidora), which is spelled very similarly to the Japanese katakana for Ghidorah.

This incarnation of the character is referred to simply as Ghidorah (ギドラ,   Gidora), both in dialogue and in official press releases.

Design

The anime King Ghidorah has only been depicted so far on the teaser poster for GODZILLA: Planet Eater. He is represented on the poster as three intertwined serpentine necks with dragon heads, surrounded in a glowing golden aura.

Origins

100,000 years ago, Ghidorah destroyed the Exif home planet of Exifcalus. The surviving Exif then wandered the vastness of space for many ensuing millennia before eventually arriving on Earth in 2035. Exif religious doctrine continued to speak of Ghidorah, with many Exif such as Metphies believing that creatures such as him are a form of divine punishment intended for decadent civilizations that pronounce themselves the lords of creation. Metphies noted that the Exif had witnessed numerous civilizations destroyed by monsters during their time wandering space, with Godzilla's appearance on Earth simply being the latest instance.

History

Post-Millennium Series

GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle

When Haruo Sakaki asked Metphies what happened to the Exif home planet of Exifcalus, he revealed that it was destroyed by a monster, just as Earth was overtaken by Godzilla. Haruo asked if there was a name for this creature which was supposedly far more powerful and destructive than Godzilla, and Metphies replied that there indeed was. He then whispered the name "Ghidorah" in Haruo's ear.
