Black Diablos (ディアブロス亜種 are giant burrowing specifically female[ Diaburosu Ashu, lit. Diablos subspecies)citation needed] wyvern monsters featured in the 2020 film, Monster Hunter. They are based on the monster species of the same name from the Capcom Monster Hunter video game franchise.
Name

Diablo's name is derived from the Spanish word diablo or diablos, which translates to devil or devils in English. Within the context of the movie itself Black Diablos is simply addressed by characters as Diablos (ディアブロス, however in multiple official interviews with the movie director Paul W. S. Anderson has addressed the creature as Black Diablos,[ Diaburosu)citation needed] with this reflecting the monster's appearance. In multiple instances of official marketing material for the film both Black Diablos and Diablos have been used interchangeably and coloration of the monster varying as well.

Black Diablos are large reptilian monsters that resemble wyverns, they have two legs with four claws on both feet, and two wings with three-digit clawed hands. The head of Black Diablos resemble the head of Triceratops, with two large, curved horns, and a frill. Black Diablos have large horns that curve at a forward-facing angle and they have frontward-facing red eyes. She has beak-like mouth, as well as two upward-facing tusks on either side of the mouth. Black Diablos are covered in osteoderm-like growths, while the neck has a rigid segmented armor-like appearance before reaching a large, armored hump that resembles the frill on her head. Her wing tips face upwards when folded and she posses three large claws for burrowing in the sand. Her tail also features the rigid, segmented appearance the neck does all the way to the tip of the tail. Her tail has a club at the end which bares resemblance to a labrys, a double-sided axe weapon.
Personality
Similar to her in-game counterpart, Black Diablos was extremely territorial, attacking the sandship when it came into her territory, preventing them from safely crossing the desert. She was also extremely aggressive and unrelenting, going as far as using so much force to attempt to catch Artemis and the hunters that she broke her own horn off in the process.

Monster Hunter
To be added.
A sandship in the New World traverses a vast desert, its destination a massive glowing pillar. As the grizzled Admiral studies his texts and a Hunter carves a figurine, a pair of Black Diablos, horned wyverns, ambush their ship. The Hunter saves one of his compatriots, the Handler, from the monsters' jaws, only to fall from the ship himself. The battle leaves him behind. The Hunter, having just spotted them with his spyglass, fires an arrow at one of the ribs which releases red chalk and cries out to them. On edge, they interpret it as an attack and open fire. Artemis orders them to stand down, but the noise attracts a Black Diablos, who pursues them half-submerged in sand. Unfazed by their weapons, it turns over the DPV and Humvee in quick succession and kills Steeler and Axe. Artemis, Lincoln, Marshall, and Dash retreat inside a cave, with the Hunter aiding them from afar with an explosive arrow, and the creature soon gives up the chase. The Black Diablos remains a threat, surfacing as soon as she drops a rock onto the sand below. They distract the Black Diablos by launching a barrel into its domain, then make a break for the destroyed Humvee and the RPG within. The Hunter agrees to act as bait, firing the poisoned arrow into the monster's left eye, but is injured by a swing of its clubbed tail. As Artemis earns its attention with a minigun, it starts to become dazed. She scored a direct hit with the RPG, but it survives and upends the Humvee with her inside. Before it can kill her, the Hunter climbs onto its back and plunges the sword into its head. It hurls him into a nearby rock, knocking him unconscious, but Artemis finishes the job by driving the blade deeper, soaring up to its head with her Slinger. She drags him towards the pillar in the distance on one of the monster's scales, deploying a survival tent when a sandstorm whips up.
