Bernie Hayes (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire)

Suko is a juvenile ape Titan[4] who appears in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Name

Suko's name is likely derived from musuko (息子), the Japanese word for "son." The name was first revealed on the packaging of Playmates' Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire toys.[7] "Suko" goes unspoken in the film, with Bernie Hayes only referring to him as a "mini Kong" at one point. Director Adam Wingard also offered the nickname Baby Kong during interviews for IGN Fan Fest 2024 and for CBR, apparently misquoting Bernie's line.[1][2]

Design

Suko is a bipedal primate similar to Kong, but with orange fur not unlike that of the Skar King. He has green irises and a scar over his right eye.

Personality

According to the packaging for his Playmates figure, Suko is a "scrappy fighter [...] with a bad attitude who always has Kong's back."[7]

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Suko was a young member of the Great Apes who lived in the Hollow Earth's "Subterranean Realm" under the vicious rule of the Skar King. He encountered Kong in a misty cave, and initially intimidated Kong with his contorted shadow, but the latter ape relaxed when Suko revealed himself. He offered the child his hand, but Suko bit his finger and ran off. Kong pursued him until he was ambushed by three other apes which Suko had come with. Suko tried to best Kong alongside them, but after being picked up and used as a flail against his comrades and being flung across the clearing, he hid instead. When the battle was over, Kong quickly discovered Suko in his hiding place, and offered him one of the fallen apes' dagger, but Suko refused.

After Kong seemingly requested Suko lead him to where he came from, the two ventured all the way to a massive lake, where Suko seemed aware of a present threat as he indicated to Kong to drink the water and bathe himself. Kong's presence drew the attention of a massive eel-like monster, which attacked Kong while Suko attempted to flee. However, Kong's axe flew in front of him and tripped him. Kong quickly caught up to the young ape, dragging the beheaded corpse of the eel-like monster with him. Later, as Kong sat eating the eel creature, Suko indicated that he was hungry, but refused to eat near Kong. Kong tore a piece off of the section he was currently eating and threw it aside for Suko, who mimicked Kong's lounging pose as he ate.

Soon the two arrived at the Skar King's prison, where Suko tried to blend in as Kong tried to help the enslaved apes. This drew out the Skar King, who mocked Kong and menaced Suko. An old ape who had been relieved to see the young Titan again on his return stood between him and the Skar King, and for this was pushed into a pool of magma. Suko cried out in horror, but tried to appear inconspicuous as Kong battled the Skar King, and later the mind-controlled Shimo. When Kong's hand was damaged by her ice breath, Suko directed Kong to a tunnel in the rock as a means of escape, allowing Kong to flee to safety, although he was pursued by many of Skar King's subjects. Kong lured them into one of his hunting traps, but the other apes were too smart to trigger its tripwire, leaving the injured Kong in peril. Suko, from atop the ravine, pushed the trap into motion, raining boulders down onto the menacing apes and killing all but one. Kong then led Suko to a hidden Iwi civilization where his human friend Jia was responding to a distress call. After Kong passed out from Shimo's frostbite, Suko panicked and ran off, where he discovered that the Skar King, Shimo, and a posse of apes were on the move. Suko returned to Kong, who was now equipped with the B.E.A.S.T. Glove, and the older ape returned to the surface to lure Godzilla to Hollow Earth to help fight the Skar King and Shimo.

During the battle between Godzilla, Kong, Mothra, the Skar King, Shimo, and the Skar King's henchmen, Suko joined the fray, striking several of the apes with boulders. However, the sole surviving ape from the group which had chased Kong pursued Suko and grabbed him, until the Iwi's gravitational inversion reverted, dropping both apes onto a massive crystal. Suko kicked the adult ape in the face, dropping it to its demise.

After the four warring Titans all fell into a portal to the surface, Suko launched himself at Kong's axe, which had been left behind. He dislodged it from the rock face as he was transported to the surface world. On leaving the portal, Suko used the axe to shatter the crystal on the Skar King's Whipslash, severing his control over Shimo.

After the Skar King's demise, Suko and Kong rode on Shimo's back down to the lair where the Skar King had once reigned, with Kong now as its new ruler.

According to the packaging for his Playmates figure, Suko is "a scrappy fighter with raw primal strength."[7]. He is strong enough to lift and drag Kong’s axe despite it being larger than him, as well as swing it.

Trivia

  • Despite him appearing to be younger than Kong was in Kong: Skull Island, Suko is at least 45 feet taller than Kong was in that movie.
  • Suko is the third juvenile ape to appear in a King Kong film, after Kiko in Son of Kong and Baby Kong in King Kong Lives. Though all of these characters are sons of Kong, Suko is the only one with no apparent biological relation to him.
  • It is possible that the Skar King is Suko's biological father. Infant apes with reddish fur like Suko's can be seen in the arms of female apes in the Skar King's throne room, possibly implying that he reproduced with these females.
    • The film's novelization expounds upon this, stating that the Skar King keeps all of the females in the civilization for himself, in something of a harem.
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's initial rumored title was Son of Kong (taken from the aforementioned film), referencing Suko.
  • A product description for Playmates' Suko with Titanus Doug Figure Set calls Doug Suko's ally, although they never interact in the film.[3]
