The Ion Dragon was primarily designed by Weta Workshop and MPC. Visual effects supervisor Sean Konrad, stated that the Ion Dragon was one of the more challenging creatures designed, as it was rethought multiple times. Initially, it was talked about making it into a bird-like creature using fauna from the Philippines as an inspiration, but that ideia was scrapped because it didn't sound sufficiently scary. In the next idea, it was talked that it should be incongruent with the environment. As the Ion Dragon would be responsible for attack a [[USS Lawton|ship]] in water, and the bottom of the ocean is full of weird-ugly and amazing creatures, MPC ended up riffing on the mouth of an anglerfish. Besides the anglerfish, Ion Dragon had receive inspirations from birds, hyenas and sharks. The Titan was created to identifiably be a dragon to tie into Billy's line in the episode, but without repeating a typical dragon design that's been used in other media: No neck frills, long necks and bulky bodies. Its wings were loosely based on flying fish. Because of its body went with a slightly more Gargoyle-ish appearance, a spiked tail was gaved to it. Besides working on its facial expressions, Weta did a few flight cycles, ajusting its wingspan and legs, so it could look like something that could plausibly fly.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.newsweek.com/monarch-legacy-monsters-lawton-godzilla-ion-dragon-apple-tv-1844642|title=Exclusive 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Finally Solves Godzilla Mystery|date=November 17, 2023|work=Newsweek}}</ref> | <!--The Ion Dragon was primarily designed by Weta Workshop and MPC. "Aftermath" is the first episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It was initially screened at the New York Comic Con on October 12, 2023, and premiered on Apple TV+ on November 17.
Plot
In the year 1973, during Monarch's ill-fated expedition to Skull Island, Bill Randa uses his camera and takes a video recording of himself in which he apologizes to an unknown person for his mistakes, but is forced to keep it short as a monster is approaching. Randa runs for his life as the monster chases after him, uprooting several bamboo trees in the process. He drops his camera, who's screen is subsequently crushed by the monster's leg, and finds himself stranded in a small cliffside besides the ocean. The monster, revealed to be a Mother Longlegs, pursues Randa, bent on killing him. Having nowhere to go, Randa throws his bag in the water for it to be discocered later. Before the Mother Longlegs can kill him, however, a Mantleclaw emerges from the ground and roars at her. The two creatures engage in a ferocious battle in Randa attempts to use as an opportunity to escape. The Mantleclaw snaps off part of the Mother Longlegs' leg with its claw; in response, the Mother Longlegs pushes the Mantleclaw off the cliff and fell after it, causing bot monsters to drown. The scene cuts to Randa's bag floating in the ocean, with a corpse of a dead Skullcrawler visible in the background.
40 years later, in 2013, a group of fishermen discover Randa's bag in a fishing net.
