Godzilla is a kaiju that appeared in the 2022 IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios crossover comic series Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and later returned in its 2024 sequel Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II. In their pursuit of the dastardly sorceress Rita Repulsa to an alternate universe, the heroic Power Rangers came face-to-face with this version of Earth's protector, Godzilla, in the midst of battle against Xilien forces. Despite an initial skirmish, Godzilla and the Power Rangers realized that they needed to work together to defeat the combined forces of Rita Repulsa and the Xiliens - an alliance that posed a grave threat to not just this world, but the entire multiverse.

Name

See also: Godzilla#Name.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Design

Godzilla generally resembles his Heisei era designs, specifically MogeGoji. In many panels, he is shown without pupils, though several close-ups reveal orange eyes with black pupils.

Personality

Godzilla is highly aggressive, attacking everything and anything in front of him. The humans of his reality are reluctant to describe him as their protector; however, the presence of the Xiliens has rendered him the lesser of two evils, and Godzilla has shown to vehemently defend the Earth from any and all invaders. He is also quite intelligent, as he quickly allies himself with the Power Rangers despite their initial battles when faced against more common foes.

History

Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Issue #1

In a bid to escape the Power Rangers once and for all, the wicked sorceress Rita Repulsa and her cohorts tracked down the Multiversal Focus and used it to find an alternate universe without Power Rangers - though the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver, followed them as they teleported away. As they came to, the Evil Space Aliens found themselves in a desolate version of Angel Grove before bearing witness to the source of the destruction - the giant monsters Godzilla and Megalon, who were currently locked in an intense battle. Megalon slashed into Godzilla's chest, but Godzilla retaliated by knocking Megalon down with a whip from his tail. The two beasts continued to trade blows, with Megalon utilizing his Geothermal Napalm and drill arms in battle - however, these abilities were no match for Godzilla, who eventually dispatched Megalon with a powerful blast of his atomic breath. During this time, Rita Repulsa and her minions had teleported themselves aboard a nearby UFO, where they discovered that Megalon had been deployed by the Xiliens - alien invaders who had come to procure Earth's resources in the name of Planet X. The Xiliens revealed that they have sent countless monsters after Godzilla, though the King of the Monsters had proven victorious time and time again, thwarting their invasion efforts thus far. Seeing Godzilla as this universe's protector akin to the Power Rangers of her world, Rita agreed to work with the Xiliens against him.

Elsewhere, Tommy Oliver regained consciousness to find Angel Grove in ruins, with Godzilla looming overhead. Assuming Godzilla to be one of Rita's monstrous creations, Tommy summoned the Dragonzord to stop the beast from ravaging his home any further. As they faced down one another, Rita simultaneously used her magic on Godzilla in an attempt to take control of the monster, only to find Godzilla resisting her influence. This brief distraction allowed the Dragonzord to strike first, slashing into Godzilla's chest with its claws and tail. However, Godzilla quickly responded with a powerful punch to the Dragonzord's chest, knocking it down with a single blow. Tommy then had the Dragonzord fire its finger missiles at Godzilla, but this only enraged the beast further, who promptly toppled the battle machine and unleashed the full might of his atomic breath upon it. Before the crippled Dragonzord could recover, Godzilla lifted his opponent over his head just as the remaining Power Rangers arrived in this reality.

Issue #2

Wasting no time, the Power Rangers quickly summoned their own Zords after Godzilla threw the Dragonzord to the ground, though the heat emanating from Godzilla alone was nearly enough to melt through their shields. The Zords then combined to form the Megazord, which immediately engaged Godzilla. Godzilla fired his atomic breath at his new opponent, though the Megazord was able to block it with the Mastodon shield. The two proceeded to trade more blows until the Power Rangers opted to summon the Power Sword to finish him off while Godzilla charged up another bout of his atomic breath. The two then rushed one another, which resulted in Godzilla unleashing the full power of his atomic breath on the Megazord point-blank while the Megazord rammed the Power Sword directly into Godzilla's chest. Rita took delight in the sight of the two combatants crippling each other, though the Xiliens warned her that Godzilla would not be bested so easily, at which point Rita ordered the Xiliens to dispatch a fleet of UFOs to finish off their shared foes. Heavily wounded, Godzilla retreated back to the ocean while the Megazord deactivated.

The Power Rangers later learned that Godzilla was the only thing this world had to protect them from the Xiliens and concluded that attacking Godzilla was a mistake.

Issue #3

Despite his injuries, Godzilla eventually resurfaced while the Megazord was in the midst of battle against the Xilien monster Gigan as well as two of Rita's creations, Rhinoblaster and Eye Guy. While Godzilla appeared to save the Megazord from Gigan's wrath with an atomic blast, he quickly set about attacking all four participants of the battle, including the Megazord, which he knocked down with his tail and clearly still regarded as just another enemy. Godzilla continued to grapple with all four opponents until he tired, at which point Gigan, Eye Guy, and Rhinoblaster began concentrating all of their firepower on Godzilla and overwhelmed him. Hoping to convince Godzilla that they could work together against their shared foes, the Power Rangers called forth the Power Sword once more and this time used it to transfer energy directly to Godzilla, healing his wounds instantly. Now back to full strength, Godzilla attacked Rhinoblaster before the Megazord followed suit and destroyed the monster, letting Godzilla see that they were on the same team. Now standing together, Godzilla and the Megazord blasted Eye Guy and Gigan with their respective beam weapons, destroying the former and forcing the latter into retreat. An enraged Rita coerced the Xiliens to deploy more monsters while Scorpina assumed her giant form to join them. Amidst the brief moment of peace, Godzilla began eyeing the Megazord with uncertainty, possibly in preparation for another assault on the mech before Megaguirus, Kamacuras, Kumonga, and Scorpina ambushed them, knocking Godzilla off his feet.

Issue #4

After taking a hit from a fireball launched by Megaguirus, Godzilla knocked several of his opponents back with his atomic breath, knocking Megaguirus out of the fight. Working in tandem, Godzilla and the Megazord defeated the insect kaiju with Godzilla crushing Kumonga with his tail while the Megazord stopped Kamacuras. Furious that her enemies appeared unstoppable, Rita staged a coup against the Xiliens and impulsively unleashed their most powerful yet dangerously unpredictable kaiju - King Ghidorah. Descending upon his foes, the three-headed terror blasted Godzilla with his powerful Gravity Beams, sending the King of the Monsters flying across the city. King Ghidorah then flew the Megazord over open waters and dropped the mech into the ocean before Godzilla blasted King Ghidorah out of the sky with his atomic breath. Godzilla then rushed into the water to tackle the dragon, who promptly began strangling Godzilla with his tails and absorbing his energy. King Ghidorah continued to dominate the fight and even began attacking the Xilien mothership in his fit of rage, overwhelming all parties with his intense Gravity Beams. As a result of the damage done to the Xilien mothership, Rita found that she was unable to send King Ghidorah back to where he had come from, forcing her to send her remaining monsters to stop the uncontrollable beast and providing Godzilla and the Megazord a brief window to recover.

Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II

Issue #1

When the White Rangar was fleeing from Rita Repulsa’s monster army. The chaos wakes up Godzilla allowing the White Ranger to escape. However monsters came after him and unintentionally brought Godzilla with them to the main Power Ranger's Universe where he continues to fight in Angel Grove.

Abilities

Atomic Breath

Godzilla's primary weapon is a concentrated blast of radiation that he can fire from his mouth. The heat from Godzilla's atomic breath alone was powerful enough to melt through the shields of the Power Rangers' Zords.

Mind Control Resistance

Godzilla was able to resist Rita Repulsa's mind control magic when she attempted to gain control over him.

Strength

In Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II he was able to overpower multiple of Rita Repulsa’s monsters.

Durability

Few attacks appeared capable of piercing Godzilla's tough skin, with the sole exception being the Power Sword. Even after suffering a serious injury by the Power Sword, Godzilla was able to recover within a short time period enough to return to battle, though he tired quickly due to him not fully recovering from his first fight.

Amphibiousness

Godzilla is able to breathe and fight underwater.

Weaknesses

Despite his durability, Godzilla was severely wounded by the Power Sword, which pierced deep into his skin and left him bleeding pure energy. He remained exhausted upon returning to battle some time later until he was revitalized by the Power Sword.
