The leviathan, Godzilla, wakes up in a hellish landscape. The abysmal plain of the underworld presenting all which has failed or gone wrong: once great cities in ruins, industrial disasters run amok, and a familiar unearthly fire of man rends the sky with colossal mushrooms. Countless lost souls have been hurled, not as participants, but as witnesses into a crumbling and hopeless void. This is not his final destination, but a journey, a test...

— Narrator (Godzilla in Hell issue 2)

Godzilla is a kaiju that appeared in IDW Publishing’s 2015 comic book series Godzilla in Hell. After Godzilla was sent to Hell, he clawed his way back out through the many demonic foes and hellish environments that challenged him.

Name

See also: Godzilla#Name.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Design

Throughout the series, Godzilla’s design is reminiscent of his Millennium era designs. In issues #1 and #5, Godzilla is identical to the KiryuGoji design with his facial structure and figure being reminiscent of the FinalGoji design. In the former, his eyes are are a dark pale lavender color and lack pupils. Additionally, his snout is relatively short and the underside of his neck is faintly red. Overall, Godzilla's design in issue 1 of the comic very closely resembles the design utilized by the Monster King in Godzilla: The Half-Century War. In issue 5, his design is far more heavily reminiscent of the KiryuGoji design. At the beginning of the issue when he was in a frozen environment, Godzilla appeared to have blue eyes, temporarily turning green in the next environment that he traversed, back to blue in the next, and then they become gray until he reformed himself with the Hellbats. In issues #2 and 3, Godzilla’s design is based on the Big G's appearance in Godzilla 2000: Millennium and Godzilla vs. Megaguirus respectively. In the former, he heavily mirrors the design as shown on film, though his eyes are visibly orange in close up panels. In the latter, Godzilla appears more expressive and anthropomorphic, his face baring a much shorter snout and very noticeable lips in some panels. His eyes in this issue aren't clear, but they seem to be green-gray. At two points during the issue, Godzilla's atomic breath was purple, the first time being after he absorbed energy from SpaceGodzilla's corona beam and the second time being after absorbing the energy of the angels and demons the flew down his throat. In issue #4, Godzilla’s design is generally identical to the GMKGoji design, with his head’s shape being inconsistent. In issue #5, after reforming his body with the Hellbats, Godzilla becomes entirely red with the exception of his skeleton. Aside from the previously mentioned, Godzilla's appearance when composed of the Hellbats is the exact same as it was prior to sacrificing himself. When charging up his atomic breath while composed by the hellbats, Godzilla appears engulfed in a fiery blue aura. The resulting atomic breath originates from his dorsal plates and the front of his body, in addition to being surrounded by a blue spiral and a powerful, windy, shockwave-like effect.

Personality

Godzilla is persistent and defiant beyond compare, never ceasing his march to escape Hell. Upon reading a stone structure that read, “Abandon all hope ye who enter here”, Godzilla destroyed the structure with his atomic breath out of retaliation. He proves completely impervious to the influences of both Heaven and Hell themselves. Godzilla expresses a lack of interest in being worshiped when he kills some of the angels and devils praising him after demon SpaceGodzilla’s defeat. Godzilla shows inquisitiveness at times, such as when he took an interest in a nuclear power plant, peeking down one of the reactors before being attacked by the Nuclear Reactor Demon. Later on, Godzilla showed signs of curiosity and observation upon encountering the Doppelgänger Demon while it was disguised as him, not attacking it until it revealed its true form. In issue 2, Godzilla isn’t the first to engage in battle during each of his encounters with the demons that he came across, merely fighting out of defense and choosing to just swim away when attacked by Demon King Ghidorah. Aside from his very prominent defiance towards Heaven and Hell, Godzilla generally displayed self-defensive and observative behavior in issue 3. In issue 4, Godzilla remains on the defense in his fights against Demon King Ghidorah and Demon Destoroyah, attempting to the exit the surrounding while his enemies fought each other. When he came to the foot of the mountain with the gate out of Hell at its peak, Godzilla displayed visible annoyance at the sight of the God-demon. After being forced off the mountain by the demon and seeing his lack of options in his situation, Godzilla demonstrated acceptance of his predicament with the Hellbats, though he later shows to have intentionally taken advantage of them. Godzilla displayed no aggressive behavior afterwards as he exited Hell and rose out of the ocean in Life.

History

Godzilla in Hell

Godzilla in Hell issue 1

After falling down from the mouth of Hell, Godzilla destroyed an enormous rock tower rising from the ground with the famous line "ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE", and moved on, passing through two befittingly hellish-looking cities before coming across a nuclear reactor. When he peeked down one of the reactors, a demon resembling a pile of organs crawled out from the smoke stacks and attacked him, though Godzilla subsequently killed it with a stomp.

As Godzilla moved on, he came upon an enormous cloud of souls that was blown around by a tremendous storm. After forcing his way through the cloud, Godzilla fell to his hands before finding what appeared to be another Godzilla. Godzilla showed confusion and curiosity as he observed this other Godzilla. Suddenly, it transformed into another demon that lashed out with tendrils and attempted to devour Godzilla, however the King of the Monsters used a nuclear pulse to destroy the demon from the inside out. The blast also weakened the ledge of Godzilla's current position, causing him to plunge deeper into Hell.

Godzilla in Hell issue 2

Godzilla was looking out over a city when a demon representation of Rodan appeared. Godzilla fought and attempted to use his atomic breath, but Rodan dodged and began charging towards Godzilla. The latter readied his tail and smacked Rodan with it, sending him hurtling to the ground. Godzilla moved on and entered an icy region where Demon Anguirus was frozen in ice. Anguirus was freed and the two start to fight, but as Godzilla hurled Anguirus away the ice cracked and Godzilla fell into an endless ocean where he encountered Demon Varan. Godzilla's atomic breath drove off Varan, but a demon King Ghidorah appeared behind him, who the narration states is the reason for Godzilla's arrival in Hell. Ghidorah's appearance created a whirlpool, which sucked Godzilla down deeper.

Godzilla in Hell issue 3

With the world in ruins, Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla are seen fighting in Rio de Janeiro. SpaceGodzilla blasted his Corona Beam at Godzilla at full intensity, but Godzilla withstood the attack and countered by firing his atomic breath at point blank range, knocking SpaceGodzilla down. After roaring in victory, Godzilla fired his atomic breath down at his foe as SpaceGodzilla fired his Corona Beam at Godzilla, causing them to lock and explode, destroying the entire Earth and causing both kaiju to disappear. Godzilla woke up in an unknown place, God himself and his angel followers attempted to persuade Godzilla in joining Heaven's army, but Godzilla was not interested in the slightest. After crushing an angel between his hands, Godzilla was thrown into Hell, where he landed in an icy cavern. There, he was confronted by a swarm of demons and a demonically-enhanced SpaceGodzilla. SpaceGodzilla tackled Godzilla and held him in place so the demons could fly down his throat to make him a permanent servant of Hell. Angels arrived and help Godzilla by giving him a powerful force field after flying down his throat, which destroyed SpaceGodzilla by reflecting his beam back at him. The angels made a second attempt to persuade Godzilla to join them, but Godzilla retaliated by destroying the emergence point from whence they came with his atomic breath. Godzilla threw some of the angels and demons that had begun worshiping him into his mouth before continuing on his way.

Godzilla in Hell issue 4

Godzilla was seen roaring in victory after defeating King Ghidorah and Destoroyah. As Godzilla walked away from his foes, their injuries healed very quickly and the two monsters got back up to resume their battle with Godzilla, blasting him with their beam attacks. Destoroyah's flying form threw Godzilla into a building, and King Ghidorah and Destoroyah's flying and aggregate forms joined in. King Ghidorah grabbed Godzilla and dropped him onto a hellish version of the Tokyo Tower, impaling him. Despite the seemingly fatal injury, Godzilla freed himself and noticed that a gigantic wall surrounded the city. Godzilla tried to blast it with his atomic breath, but the wall regenerates. While Godzilla was distracted, Destoroyah decapitated him with his horn, only for Godzilla to instantly grow his head back. King Ghidorah and Destoroyah then continued their assault until Godzilla allowed himself to be defeated, causing King Ghidorah and Destoroyah turn on each other. Godzilla tried to destroy the wall again, with King Ghidorah and Destoroyah seeing him and trying to use their beams again, but Godzilla fired his atomic breath while ducking to avoid King Ghidorah and Destoroyah's attack. Godzilla managed to make a hole in the wall and continued on his way.

Godzilla in Hell issue 5

Godzilla appeared from a white void, being bombarded by severe blizzards, but he pressed onward. Coming to a large bridge at the edge of a waterfall of blood, Godzilla burst through it and tumbled below into a pit of large stalactites. Swatting some of the spires with his tail in anger, he moved on, causing swarms of Hellbats to emerge from the spires. Godzilla kept the swarm at bay with his tail as he neared the end of his journey. Godzilla arrived at his final trial: an impossibly tall mountain that completely dwarfed even him, atop which slept the God-demon, who guarded the entrance to the living world. Godzilla tried to blast the demon with his atomic breath, but it doesn't move. Ever determined, the King of the Monsters began climbing the mountain , but the demon took notice and caused a landslide to knock Godzilla down and bury him under the rubble. Bursting forth, Godzilla appeared defeated and closed his eyes, allowing the Hellbats to devour him alive. The Hellbats swarmed around Godzilla and left only his bones. The Hellbats then began to fly away before all suddenly convulsing and each growing one eye. The Hellbats started screeching miniature versions of Godzilla's roar and flew back to his skeleton, swarmed around it, and reformed Godzilla's body with their own. The Hellbat-Godzilla then collectively roared at the God-demon in challenge, followed by each Hellbat firing its atomic breath simultaneously, thus causing a Godzilla-sized atomic blast to slam into the God-demon, killing it. The Hellbat-Godzilla then climbed the mountain and reached the gate. In the living world, a fully alive and reformed Godzilla bursted from the ocean, roaring in great triumph.

Abilities

Godzilla slams his body into the Doppelgänger Demon

Physical capabilities

Godzilla’s strength is beyond compare, as he was able to stomp the Nuclear Reactor Demon to death, use his tail to thwart an oncoming Demon Rodan and send him hurtling to the ground with just one hit, and throw Demon Anguirus at the surrounding environment with enough force to send the ice crumbling beneath his feet and inadvertently plunging himself into another "realm" in Hell. In the beginning of Issue 4, Demon King Ghidorah and Demon Destroyah were seen with visible damage, such as scarred eyes and a broken horn after Godzilla defeated the first time prior to the events of the issue. When thrown in the air by the Doppelgänger Demon, Godzilla used it to his advantage and body slammed the creature before beginning to pummel it with his hands. Godzilla was also shown to be resilient against the extreme weather of Hell, making his way through a massive soul storm in issue 1 and a gigantic blizzard in issue 5. Godzilla also attempted to climb the enormous mountain the God-demon was perched atop before the latter collapsed a portion of the rock onto him, but he was able to make it to the top after besting the foe from afar. When demon King Ghidorah rushed him in Issue 4, Godzilla instantaneously threw the three-headed demon dragon at a building. Godzilla brutally shattered SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals with his bare hands without struggle in issue 3. Godzilla also proves to have impressive reflexes, killing an angel with a sudden clap in issue 3, defeating Rodan with a swift hit from his tail in issue 2, swatting away some hellbats in issue 5, and seemingly ducking when Demon King Ghidorah and Demon Destoroyah attempted to blast him with their beam weapons from behind in issue 4.

Atomic breath

Godzilla is able to fire the character's trademark atomic breath, which is typically blue in every issue of the comic. In issue 1, Godzilla reduced a tall stone structure to rubble with just one atomic blast, and later freed himself from the Doppelganger's grasp by blasting its tendrils. In issue 2, Godzilla scared off Varan with just one blast of his atomic breath. In issue 3, after absorbing the energy from the angels and devils that flew down his throat, Godzilla destroyed the entrance to Heaven created by God, creating a hole in the surrounding environment that would eventually lead him into another realm in hell. Earlier on, when entering a beam-fight with SpaceGodzilla, the resulting explosion created by the two beams blew the Earth, regardless of whether it was in life or in hell, to pieces. Before that, Godzilla's atomic breath visibly caused SpaceGodzilla incredible pain, especially after he absorbed some energy from his opponent's corona beam. In issue 4, Godzilla's atomic breath was able to stand against Demon King Ghidorah and Demon Destoroyah's combined breath weapons, the latter eventually getting sent flying backwards by the blast. Later, one blast of his atomic breath caused one of King Ghidorah's heads visible pain and would send Destoroyah flying backwards a second time moments later. When he possessed and altered the Hellbats, each of them could fire his atomic breath, resulting in a massive beam of energy that obliterated the God-demon, an opponent that did not even react to him attempting to utilize his atomic breath before his reformation. In addition to obliterating the God-demon entirely, his atomic breath cleaved a path up the mountain for him to reach the gate that exits out hell.

Nuclear pulse

Godzilla is able to discharge a nuclear pulse from his body, which obliterated the Doppelgänger Demon after it attempted to consume him. Godzilla’s dorsal plates glow orange before unleashing this attack.

Intelligence

Godzilla possesses remarkable intelligence both in and out of battle. When it seemed that he was about to be consumed by the Doppelganger Demon, Godzilla ran headfirst into the demon’s mouth, obliterating it from the inside with his nuclear pulse. In his fight against demon King Ghidorah and demon Destoroyah, Godzilla inquired that his atomic breath couldn’t destroy a particular wall surrounding the city battlefield, thus took advantage of his two opponents firing their beam attacks at him, dodging before the combined power of all three monsters destroyed the wall. Before that, Godzilla utilized a stealth attack on King Ghidorah, which turned out successful. When he depleted his atomic breath and was left with zero options in defeating the God-demon, Godzilla allowed himself to be devoured by the Hellbats. Subsequently, he took possession of all the Hellbats like a ghost before utilizing them to recreate his body and amplify his power. This strategy proved successful when Godzilla subsequently obliterated the God-demon with his newly gained power.

Willpower

Godzilla possesses so much willpower, he proved completely impervious to being influenced or swayed by God when it sought his allegiance. He would also prove to be unaffected by the attempts of the devils of hell when they also sought his allegiance.

Regeneration

Godzilla has demonstrated on many occasions the ability to regenerate at an unimaginable rate, standing strong even after injuries that at the least seemed critical if not lethal. After impalement through the torso courtesy of demon King Ghidorah, Godzilla instantaneously recovered as if no harm occurred. After being decapitated by demon Destoroyah’s aggregate forms, Godzilla came upon his fallen head with a new one regenerated.

Durability

Godzilla is shown falling from incredible heights on multiple occasions, including when he survived being thrown into Hell by God after refusing to give his allegiance to it. Godzilla showed to be capable of taking attacks even from enemies that rival his strength and power such as Demon King Ghidorah, Demon Destoroyah, the Doppelganger Demon, and SpaceGodzilla. Even without enhancements, Godzilla traversed Hell with minuscule difficulty, gaining no injuries from his surroundings as he fought for his escape. When he allowed himself to be devoured by the Hellbats, he showed no signs of pain as the creatures slowly picked off his flesh to the bone. When Anguirus bit his arm, Godzilla showed no signs of pain, let alone any kind of reaction aside from countering the attack.

Possession

After they devoured his flesh and left nothing but bones, Godzilla suddenly possessed and altered the Hellbats into cyclopean versions of themselves. Through them, Godzilla reformed his own body structure around his bones, vocalizing his roar through the countless Hellbats, and acquiring the ability to fire his atomic breath from the Hellbats themselves.

Aura

Godzilla temporarily gained a purple aura around his entire being after absorbing the energy of the angels and devils that flew down his throat in his rematch with demon SpaceGodzilla, which seemed to possess some forcefield-like properties given that it managed to reflect the monster's corona beam back at him, destroying him.

Self-resurrection

Upon walking through the exit out of Hell, Godzilla returned to life completely reformed in his own flesh, emerging out of the ocean as if his time in the afterlife never occurred.

Weaknesses

As shown in issue #5, Godzilla can’t fire his atomic breath once he is depleted of energy. His durability was not enough to keep King Ghidorah from impaling him via dropping him on a tower, Destoroyah from decapitating him, and the Hellbats from devouring him. As indirectly explained by the narrator in issue #2, Godzilla came into Hell after being killed by King Ghidorah in the Living World. Godzilla was shown struggling and reacting in pain from the combined efforts of demon King Ghidorah and demon Destoroyah. Godzilla's flesh, as tough as it is, was completely eaten away by the swarms of Hellbats.
