King Kong in the Microcosmos #5 is a comic book by Editorial América, S.A. It was published circa 1979.
Plot
The Neutromobile is tossed around by the swirling current before being spat out into a vast cave system. On the surface, the weather begins to clear, allowing Bronson and his men to resume staking out the pygmies' cave entrances. Tom, Julie, and Kalimba, having been brought into the pygmy village, sit with its chief N'conda in a hut. With Kalimba acting as interpreter, the chief expresses remorse for the death of the expeditioners' driver and invites them to see the sacred tomb of his people, who are named Tuties. Julie is disgusted by this prospect, but Kalimba insists that they go, else they offend the deadly tribe. Colonel Jensen reports to his superior that his detachment's sweep has turned up no signs of the aliens. After receiving orders to camp out and wait for further instruction, he muses about how lucky Captain Court is to have a lead on his targets. Court, meanwhile, follows Bronson's trail into Tuties territory. Though his driver advises caution around the pygmies, Court assures him that they will be peaceful as long as they don't feel threatened and no disturbance is brought to their dead, who they worship like gods.
Voltan, Fara, and King Kong spend hours driving through the cave in search of an exit, to no avail. Voltan concludes that water must be entering the cave through cracks too small for the Neutromobile to pass through, and advises that they continue on foot—but not before shrinking the vehicle with the Molecular Compactor so that they can carry it with them. They soon come upon a reservoir of groundwater which Fara suggests that they use to bathe, promptly stripping naked and entering. Though Kong also gives it a try, he only succeeds in splashing around. Back on the surface, Bronson spots the expeditioners walking to a cave with N'conda and some Tuties, immediately concluding that they are after the emeralds. Julie has to be convinced to enter by Kalimba, who reminds her that they must stay in the pygmies' good graces. Once inside, the group comes upon a collection of mummified corpses belonging to the Tuties' most important chiefs. They also find that the tomb contains priceless deposits of emeralds, which are used to decorate the altars that the mummies lay upon. Bronson sneaks closer to the cave entrance, resolving to ambush the group as they emerge.
N'conda gifts Julie an emerald pendant worn by one of the mummies. While reluctant to put it on, she gives in when Kalimba warns that the Tuties will kill them for rejecting. When the group steps outside, all of the pygmies except N'conda are gunned down by Bronson and his men. Bronson demands that N'conda take him to the emeralds, but Julie explains that he doesn't speak their language and was being translated for by Kalimba. It is then that Julie notices Kalimba laying face-down next to them, apparently dead. Nearby, Captain Court hears the gunfire and sets off toward its direction. Kong and the aliens continue looking for an escape, but come face-to-face with a scorpion. Kong rushes to attack it, and ends up caught in its claw. Voltan tries wrestling the arachnid's tail away from Kong, but is thrown to the ground. It then stings Kong squarely in the back but, miraculously, fails to penetrate his skin. He responds by bashing its claw open, and it is killed with a volley of lasers by Voltan. Julie wonders in amazement how Kong wasn't harmed, to which Voltan responds that he believes the ape's molecules are so compact in his shrunken state that he is virtually impervious.
Bronson is incredulous that N'conda doesn't understand him; when Julie again insists that they were communicating through Kalimba, he threatens to kill her if she can't make the chief talk. With much effort, she manages to get through to N'conda, who gestures at the cave. Bronson agrees to enter with them on the condition that they go first, giving him a clear shot if they try to betray him. Captain Court runs into some Tuties who testify that Tom, Julie, and Kalimba had passed through. Court then hears a distant drum beat which signals that N'conda and the expeditioners are in danger. While Kong and the aliens are taking a break to rest, Voltan is suddenly swallowed by quicksand.
