Gnarled Finger is a Great Ape and member of Kong's species who appears in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Name
Gnarled Finger's name comes from his crooked and knotted fingers, similar to the effects of real-world medical conditions such as arthritis which are colloquially known as "gnarled fingers."
Development
Like all of the known minor Great Apes sans Boots, Gnarled Finger was most likely modularly constructed.[2]
Design
Gnarled Finger appears to be very similar to the other Great Apes in the Skar King's lair, having a lanky body, greyish fur, and exposed skin on the arms and chest. Like One-Eye and several other Great Apes, Gnarled Finger resembles a chimpanzee. Compared to One-Eye, Gnarled Finger has more fur and has slightly more muscular biceps, though like One-Eye he is balding. True to his name, his hands are frail and bony.
Personality
Gnarled Finger was the passive guardian figure of Suko, defending him from the cruelty of other Great Apes. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - The Official Movie Novelization, Gnarled Finger saved Suko from getting beaten to death as a child, and would tend to the younger ape's wounds when injured. Despite this, Gnarled Finger would only share food with Suko if he himself was full. When Suko returned with Kong, Gnarled Finger expressed worry for Suko before he signed to him. When the Skar King threatened to harm Suko, Gnarled Finger passively blocked him while gesturing no intended aggression. His bond with Suko ran so deep that Kong's thoughts in the novelization note that Suko cried like he was kicked into the lava after Gnarled Finger's death.
History
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
When Suko returned to the Living Caves with Kong, he passed by Gnarled Finger and exchanged glances and a gesture with the elderly ape. Later, while Suko panicked after Kong knocked out a Great Ape guard, Gnarled Finger approached and comforted him. After Suko was threatened by the Skar King, Gnarled Finger got between them. The Skar King relented and turned towards Kong while Gnarled Finger ushered Suko away, only to kick backwards and knock the elder into a lake of lava.
Abilities
Strength
As one of the Skar King's many laborers, Gnarled Finger was briefly seen shoving a cube of rock larger than him, but stopped to interact with Suko.
Intelligence
Gnarled Finger expressed concern when Suko returned to the Living Caves with Kong, exchanging gestures with the young Great Ape as they passed. As Suko cowered from the Skar King's presence, Gnarled Finger comforted him, and instead of challenging the Skar King he too cowered before ushering Suko away once the despot relented.
Weaknesses
The Skar King killed Gnarled Finger by kicking him into a lake of lava, where he quickly burned to death.
Books
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - The Official Movie Novelization
Suko contemplated his gift of food by Kong by comparing him to Gnarled Finger, who saved him from being beaten to death when he was younger, protected him from other Great Apes, and tended to his wounds. Even though they were close, Gnarled Finger would only let Suko take his food if the younger ape stole it from him when he was full, which Suko dismissed as "the way of the caves.
When the Skar King turned his rage on Suko, Gnarled Finger pulled the younger ape away, drawing the Skar King's ire and insults. The tyrant soon lost interest and turned away, but quickly kicked Gnarled Finger into a pool of lava to his death.
Later, Suko recalled how he used to wish the Skar King would claim him as his son, but no longer wanted it due to him killing Gnarled Finger and trying to kill Kong, both of whom were kind to Suko.
