Boots is a Great Ape who first appeared in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Name

As with the rest of the named Great Apes (besides the Skar King and Suko), Boots' name is never spoken onscreen. Uniquely, it is not included in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's novelization, either. Rather, the name was revealed in a befores & afters article.[1] "Boots" may be a reference to the ape character of the same name from Dora the Explorer.

Development

Unlike the rest of the Great Apes, who were constructed from modular parts, Boots was deliberately designed to look sympathetic.[1]

Design

Boots resembles a gorilla, a feature shared with several other Great Apes such as Stone Fist and Catcher. He has sunken, beady eyes, large and droopy eye sockets, short brownish-tan fur coating his body, and a small beard. His skin is grayish brown and covered in pink and white blotches, some of which can be seen through his fur and are especially plentiful on his face and chest. He has a thick red stripe running diagonally from his right shoulder to his waist, as well as a blotch of red paint on his left shoulder.

Personality

Boots often appears to be sad and scared. He was shocked when he dropped a boulder, staring at it with shock until he was assailed by a guard. He was reluctant to accept Kong's help, but accepted and maintained eye contact with the larger Great Ape. Boots timidly ducked down and returned to work as another guard approached, cowered with the rest of the apes before the Skar King, and watched with some apparent concern as he and Kong fought. Later, when Kong, Suko, and Shimo returned, Boots teared up at the sight, and pumped his fist in the air with the rest of the Great Apes in support of their liberators.

History

Boots was handed a large boulder by another working ape and turned to pass it on to the next ape. However, he dropped it, and stared in surprise before being knocked down and kicked by a guard. As Boots laid on the ground, Kong approached and placed his axe on the ground, extending a hand to help Boots up. Boots accepted and returned to his feet, only to cower in fear as a guard came and yelled in Kong's face. After the Skar King leaped down from his throne, Boots was among the apes to bow down. Boots was seen spectating the fight between the Skar King and Kong.

Later, after Kong, Suko, and Shimo returned to the Skar King's kingdom, Boots was among the apes who watched them return, looking up at their liberator with teary eyes and pumping up a fist with the rest of the Great Apes at Kong's prompting.

Abilities

Physical capabilities

Boots is capable of hauling massive, heavy boulders.

Intelligence

Boots recognized Kong's attempt to help him to his feet. A few moments later, Boots returned to work when a guard approached Kong to scream at him. Boots also submitted to the Skar King, albeit with some hesitation.

Weaknesses

Boots struggled to carry the boulder he was handed, causing him to drop it, and was knocked down and kicked by a guard as punishment. He required Kong’s assistance to get back up.
