Dichlorodifluoromethane, popularly known by the genericized brand name Freon (フロン Fron), is a colorless gas used as a refrigerant and aerosol spray propellant. Freon played a crucial role in Operation Wada Tsumi to defeat Godzilla in the 2023 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla Minus One, as well as Anguirus' victory over Destoroyah in the first issue of IDW Publishing's 2011 comic series Godzilla Legends.

Godzilla Minus One

Following Godzilla's destructive raid on Tokyo's Ginza district, the Japanese government secured the return of four IJN destroyers as part of a desperate civilian-led plan to destroy the monster. Former naval engineer Kenji Noda revealed a wood model of Godzilla, weighted just enough to float in a tank of seawater. He asked the citizens what would happen if the model was enveloped in Freon gas bubbles. After one citizen said it would stay afloat, Noda released the gas valve into the tank. The model was surrounded in bubbles and sank to the bottom, surprising the attendees. Noda explained that the bubbles prevented the model from contacting the seawater, with the idea of sinking Godzilla using that method. The scientists closed the blinds of the meeting room and projected slides behind the naval engineer. Noda explained that they would use two ships to circle Godzilla with a wire of Freon canisters before rupturing them, sinking the monster 1,500 meters into Sagami Bay to induce barotrauma.
At a dock near Sagami Bay, Toyo Balloon and its employees supplied the Freon canisters, attached with the inflatable flotation devices and 46-cm shells, for the operation. The destroyer Yukikaze was fitted with two diagonal racks installed on the rear port and starboard, with 7 large Freon canisters on each rack attached to the cable connected to Hibiki.
When Godzilla arrived at the mainland faster than anticipated, Noda ordered the destroyers to set sail anyway, relying entirely on Koichi Shikishima, one of Noda's crewmates aboard the minesweeper Shinseimaru, to lead the monster out to sea. While Shikishima lured Godzilla to Sagami Bay in the Shinden, the Toyo Balloon employees readied the Freon canisters before the operation began. After Godzilla expended his atomic breath on the unmanned decoy destroyers, the Freon canisters were deployed off Yukikaze into the ocean, and together the two ships encircled Godzilla. The destroyers wrapped the Freon canisters attached to the cable around him while Shikishima continued to distract the monster. Godzilla noticed Yukikaze, but before he could fire his atomic breath, the 46-cm shells were detonated and the Freon canisters were ruptured, forcibly sinking the monster underwater. Unfortunately, Godzilla survived the descent, forcing the private citizens to move to Plan B. The operation succeeded with the assistance of Shiro Mizushima leading a fleet of tugboats to pull Godzilla to the surface and Shikishima crashing the Shinden into Godzilla's mouth.
Effects
Aeration
In Godzilla Minus One, Kenji Noda explained that Freon gas bubbles prevented the wooden Godzilla model from contacting the seawater, causing it to sink to the bottom of the tank. For Operation Wada Tsumi, the Freon canisters had 46-cm shells attached to them. When the shells detonated, the explosions created a cavity of air. The Freon tanks were then ruptured, with the gas surrounding Godzilla. Godzilla's body was isolated from the water, lost his buoyancy, and sank to the depths of the ocean. When the Freon gas stopped, the pressurization effect of the water returned, crushing Godzilla's body.[1]
Freezing
In the first issue of Godzilla Legends, Destoroyah was greatly injured and partially frozen over due to colliding with Freon tanks, allowing Anguirus to ram and defeat him. Freon is also established to have stopped Destoroyah's rampages in the past.
Pollution
Freon's pollutive properties and role in damaging the ozone layer are referenced in the 13th story of The Godzilla Comic, "Godzilla's Resumed Earth Defense Battle".
Weakening
The release of Freon and other gases after the destruction of Mr. Minesuke's factories in "Godzilla's Resumed Earth Defense Battle" appeared to weaken Godzilla's atomic breath, making it less effective.

Dr. Testsuichi Serizawa, Dr. Daisuke Serizawa's nephew, made an appeal on live television warning that the release of Freon gas and other pollutants was placing the Earth in danger due to ozone layer depletion. Serizawa and a colleague then argued with Mr. Minesuke on television over the latter's factories releasing Freon into the atmosphere but the broadcast was interrupted by the news that Mothra had arrived in Antarctica and was spraying silk into the sky. Adding to the situation was the arrival of Gigan attacking Minesuke's chemical factories in the Kantō area, releasing even more pollutants into the atmosphere, though thankfully the space monster and its ally King Ghidorah were sent into retreat by Godzilla despite the pollution having a weakening effect on the Earth monster.
It was later revealed that Mothra had been firing silk into the sky to restore the ozone layer, dying soon after due to the cold and injuries from King Ghidorah sometime earlier. Serizawa found out soon after this that an alien conspiracy had engineered the situation with Gigan and King Ghidorah to release pollutants into the air for the sakes of conquering Earth and making it more hospitable for themselves but this plan had been foiled by Mothra and Godzilla's intervention.
Godzilla Legends
"The Underdog"
Watching Destoroyah beat down Anguirus in Sydney, Australia, Dr. Brian Anders and Major Samantha Tagger attempted to aid the smaller kaiju by luring Destoroyah into tanks of Freon, long known to be effective against him. Anders attempted to rewire the Godzilla Signaler to target Destoroyah, but it merely stunned him. Before he could resume his attack on Anguirus, Colonel Matsumiya appeared in a helicopter and rammed Destoroyah with a Freon tank, having heard Anders and Tagger's plan over the radio. Anguirus recovered and curled into a ball, hurling himself at the partially-frozen Destoroyah and shattering his frozen parts, forcing the larger kaiju to retreat.

Trivia
- Gigan's flying prop in the Showa era emitted Freon gas from its sails to simulate him flying at high speeds.[2] Freon was later used in a similar manner for both the Garuda's flying prop in the 1993 Godzilla film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II[citation needed], and a 3-shaku model of Gamera in the 1995 Gamera film Gamera the Guardian of the Universe.[citation needed]
