Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ,   Mekagojira) is a cybernetic Titan who appears in the 2021 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla vs. Kong. He is the second incarnation of Mechagodzilla to appear in an American-made film, after the incarnation featured in the 2018 film Ready Player One.

A robotic duplicate of Godzilla built in secret by APEX Cybernetics to end the reign of the Titans, Mechagodzilla was activated while Godzilla and Kong battled in Hong Kong. Quickly going out of control, the machine destroyed the APEX facility and burst free from Victoria Peak Mountain just after Godzilla defeated Kong. The mechanical monster set its sights on its organic counterpart and bombarded him with its missiles, proton scream, and punches from its drill hand. Just when Godzilla seemed outmatched, Kong came to his enemy's rescue, helping to turn the tide. By cooperating, Godzilla and Kong were able to triumph over the Ultimate Destroyer when Godzilla charged Kong's axe with his atomic breath, allowing Kong to slice Mechagodzilla apart.

Name

The name "Mechagodzilla" comes from "mecha," which is derived from the word "mechanical," and Godzilla's name

Design

This Mechagodzilla is considerably thinner than previous incarnations of the character. Mechagodzilla is primarily a gun-metal color, with small hints of black through its body.

Mechagodzilla also appears to have small red “orbs” on its torso. It supports three rows of small, square-shaped dorsal plates with a small hint of red at the top. These dorsal plates travel from Mechagodzilla’s head to its tail, which ends with a set of small blades. His tail appears to be versatile and more flexible than previous incarnations.

Unlike past incarnations, Mechagodzilla's head bears the shape of King Ghidorah's head, which is actually houses his skull underneath Mechagodzilla’s exterior. Its head also has a pair of red eyes, along with an artificial brain to control Mechagodzilla's movements.

Mechagodzilla's arms and hands are noticeably larger and thicker than those of previous incarnations, its hands resembling giant crane claws. Both of Mechagodzilla’s feet support a total of five digits, with four at the front and one at the back.

Origins

Mechagodzilla is cybernetic Titan that was created by APEX Cybernetics in secret to destroy Godzilla and end the reign of Titans.[2] At some point during the five years after Godzilla defeated King Ghidorah, APEX had acquired King Ghidorah’s skull and built Mechagodzilla around it.[3]

Godzilla vs. Kong

While Godzilla and Kong did battle in Hong Kong, APEX activated Mechagodzilla. However, the machine instantly severed its neural link with Ren Serizawa and went out of control, destroying the APEX facility and killing both Serizawa and Walter Simmons. The robotic beast burst free from Victoria Peak Mountain and began destroying Hong Kong with its proton scream. Godzilla, having just beaten Kong, roared at his mechanical duplicate, which promptly attacked him. Mechagodzilla fired its missiles at the King of the Monsters, along with its proton scream. It spun its claws like drills and laid into Godzilla with punches. Finally, the two Titans engaged in a beam lock, which Mechagodzilla won, severely burning Godzilla's chest. As Mechagodzilla closed in for the kill, Nathan Lind and his allies detonated a Hollow Earth Antigravity Vehicle on Kong's chest, reviving him. Jia convinced Kong that Godzilla was not his enemy and that Mechagodzilla was the true enemy, so Kong sprung into action, tearing Mechagodzilla away from Godzilla. Both monsters then joined forces, landing hits on Mechagodzilla and pulling it through a building by its arms. Mechagodzilla regained the upper hand, knocking Godzilla down and pinning Kong against a building. Mechagodzilla lashed its tail at Kong, trying to drive it into his face. Watching the battle from Mechagodzilla's control room, Madison Russell, Josh Valentine, and Bernie Hayes realized they had to do something. Hayes dismissed the notion and suggested they have one last drink before they die. This gave Josh an idea. Josh took Hayes' flask of alcohol and poured it over Mechagodzilla's computer monitor, causing it to spark and making Mechagodzilla momentarily hesitate. Godzilla took this opportunity to fire his atomic breath at Kong's axe, charging it. Kong repeatedly struck Mechagodzilla with the axe, managing to chop off its arm. Kong used the axe to sever its other arm and one of its legs, bringing Mechagodzilla to the ground. Kong slammed the axe down on Mechagodzilla's neck, then tore off its head. Kong held up Mechagodzilla's severed head and roared triumphantly.

Abilities

Proton Scream[4]

Mechagodzilla can fire a red beam of pure energy from its mouth. This attack managed to overpower Godzilla’s atomic breath and was potent enough to cut a Skullcrawler in half.

Missile Launchers

Mechagodzilla has a pair of missile launchers just behind its shoulder pads. These missiles made Godzilla roar out in pain.

Jet Boosters

Mechagodzilla has a pair of jet boosters right by its dorsal fins. These boosters made Mechagodzilla more agile in close quarters combat, allowing it to get the upper hand over Godzilla.

Drill Hand

Just like Kiryu, this Mechagodzilla can form his hands into drill-like weapons.

Tail

Mechagodzilla's tail is tipped with multiple spikes, and can be rotated at high speed to act like a drill.

Physical Capabilities

Mechagodzilla relies on close quarters combat and energy-based weapons. Mechagodzilla uses its jet boosters to outmaneuver Godzilla. In close quarters combat, Mechagodzilla uses its massive claws to knock Godzilla to the ground and even effortlessly drags him across the ground.

Trivia

  • This Mechagodzilla, like the Showa Mechagodzilla, first emerges from a mountain, engages in a beam lock with Godzilla, fires missiles, and is defeated by having its head torn off.
