Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex

The Azure Skyshark is a flying mollusk-like superspecies that was introduced in the 2025 bestiary book Kong: Skull Island - Creature Codex.

Name

The Azure Skyshark is named after the color "azure", and "skyshark" which refers to it's appearance. The Azure Skysharks' cryptozoological classification, Caedes nubis, is derived from the Latin words caedes, meaning "slaughter" or "murder", and nubis, meaning "cloud."[1]

Design

The Azure Skyshark is shaped like a plane, having two wings and a tail-like structure that ends in a fin. Its skin is thin with certain sections appearing transparent. The superspecies is a light blue in color with a pinkish underbelly, white back and basic yellow eyes. These eyes are located on the front and bottom of the body. The creature has no head, but two small appendages where a mouth would be expected to be. The Azure Skyshark's mouth is a long reddish slit on its underside. The superspecies also has a tongue.[1]

Behavior

Azure Skysharks are a carnivorous predatory superspecies found in the skies of Skull Island. The creatures fly by producing hydrogen gas and inflating themselves with it. Using high pressure, they can siphon the hydrogen out of the dorsal sections of their wings to propel themselves through the air. Azure Skysharks can adjust the amount of gas within them in order to be more or less buoyant. The superspecies' blue skin color allows them to camouflage in the sky during the day. Even aerial creatures may struggle to spot them. When hunting, they quietly dive down towards prey and envelop their bodies around them. The Azure Skysharks then place their victims in their mouths and use hydrogen to try to suffocate them. If their prey is too large, they will put only their heads in their mouth. The superspecies hunts frequently in the day. At night, Azure Skysharks rise as high as possible into the atmosphere to rest and to avoid being attacked.[1]

Abilities

Hydrogen gas

Azure Skysharks are capable of producing hydrogen gas that they inflate their bodies with. This allows them to float in the air. They can then release some of this gas from the dorsal sections of their wings to propel themselves. When attacking, the creatures can use the hydrogen to try to asphyxiate victims within their mouths.[1]

Physical abilities

An Azure Skyshark can wrap its body around prey, allowing it to then place the victim in its mouth. They can also lick opponents which can cause injury.[1]

Weaknesses

Azure Skysharks are highly flammable. Any flames that enter their mouths or burn through their skins will cause an explosion that kills them. However, the superspecies' skin is soft and slimy, providing a minor amount of protection against this.[1]
