― Gigaman and Gaya about Balzarr (GigaBash)

Balzarr (バルザール,   Baruzāru) is an alien manticore Titan added to GigaBash in the 2024 Mighty DLC. Known as the "Demon Star", it is a power-hungry predator that invades planets in search of Giga Energy. Balzarr arrived on Earth in 2021 and attacked Giga Crystal storage facilities, wiping out the majority of Earth's Aegis Program units in the process, leaving the survivors to band together and form R.O.J.A.K. against it. In one timeline, Balzarr trailed in Rawa's wake as the latter roused Titans from around the world and forced them to fight, with Balzarr defeating the weakened victors and stealing their energy before eventually meeting and merging with Rawa into their combined form, Zargorah.

Development

Balzarr is stated to be inspired by "a certain gold bipedal lion" from one of the development team's favorite childhood shows, heavily implied to be the manticore monster Goldar from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. At one point, it was planned to wield an actual sword with its mouth while having three wire-like tails ending in knife-like blades, while another early design showed it having a more humanoid torso on a quadrupedal body, like a centaur.[2]

Design

Balzarr is modeled after a manticore, possessing a lion-like body with the tail of a scorpion. It is covered in golden armor, which also serves as its claws. Its exposed body parts bear bluish fur and skin. Balzarr's mane covers most of its neck and is black in color, while similar black fur forms a pair of small wing-like structures on its shoulders. Balzarr possesses two prehensile tails, both mirror halves of the other that can combine into a single broad tail. Both halves can telescopically extend well past their normal length, and possess a massive reddish blade in the place of a normal scorpion stinger, each with half a blue gemstone embedded in them. When combined, the gemstone merges and the tail resembles a battle axe.[2] Balzarr has two red eyes that constantly glow brightly, especially when it assumes its Predator Stance, though occasionally they dim just enough to reveal black pupils. In its S-Class form, Balzarr's mane and tail spikes drastically increase in size and turn a vivid red, while its armor grows more jagged and rows of small white spikes appear on each of its limbs.

Personality

Balzarr is animalistic, hunting with predatory cunning and ferocity. It bears a relentless appetite for Giga Energy, causing it to actively and strategically attack Giga Energy storage facilities to feed while allowing it to crush all resistance to its raids, especially due to its armor protecting it. Balzarr appears to prefer having an advantage during fights, as it ignored the United States' Super Aegis teams while feeding on Giga Energy until it had entered its S-Class form and used its ultimate, and repeatedly fled from R.O.J.A.K., the last Mighty Warrior team, highly motivated to hunt it down. In Gigaman's storyline A Legend Reborn, Balzarr waited for the Titans driven berserk by Rawa to tire themselves out before attacking them; in Yefan City, China, this tactic failed to weaken Gigaman and R.O.J.A.K., forcing Balzarr to retreat for a massive source of Giga Energy in Siberia's Yeti Sanctuary in other to regain its strength. Balzarr constantly sharpens its blades against each other and its teeth.

Origins

Over two billion years ago, there was a "Cosmic Chaos" known as Zargorah, the Devourer of Stars. What exactly became of this primordial being is unknown, though it is believed that it fractured into many splinters, its power split into the Giga Energy that forms the core of the Hollow Earth, embodied and absorbed by many known Titans, each animalistic piece instinctually seeking to be whole once more. Zargorah itself got split into two lesser Titans,[3] Rawa the serpent, and Balzarr the space manticore, both beasts only being a few thousand years old, a fraction of the age of their combined form.

In its insatiable hunger, Balzarr has gone from planet to planet, destroying all resistance in search of Giga Energy. When it finally arrived on Earth on or before May 27, 2021, the beast, codenamed Titan A-016 by the Global Titan Defense Initiative (GTDI), tore through most of Earth's defenses. In two weeks, it had ransacked 12 Giga Crystal storage facilities all over the world, devastating the US, Canada, China, Malaysia, Korea, France, and the Kahu'a Republic.

Colonel T. Morowitz recorded one such incident on June 7. At around 02:27 AM, Balzarr crashed in "Bunker C" of the Giga Crystal Storage Facility in Houston, Texas, which Colonel Morowitz served as the base commander of. Super Aegis teams Sierra, Delta, and Echo, comprising a total of 14 Mighty Warriors, were sent against it as it raided the base. Appearing to gain the upper hand by cornering it as it fed, Balzarr simply ignored all attempts to shoot it, its armor enduring every shot as it continued to consume the crystals. Eventually, it assumed its S-Class form, and, using its ultimate attack, "Falling Demon Star", he destroyed all three Super Aegis units, allowing him to continue feasting uninterrupted before flying away. Of the fourteen Mighty Warriors that fought to defend the facility on that early morning, only Sergeant Sam Williams survived, albeit greatly injured and as demoralized as the rest of the troops stationed within the facility.

Balzarr's global path of destruction has, so far, led to the death of almost all known Mighty Warriors around the world. The survivors of these various attacks, hailing from Japan (Eji Yōsuke of Kabuto), China (Zhou Yang of Tian Long), Malaysia ("Crown" of the Aegis sharing the same name), the Kahu'a Republic (Jack Kavana of Rex), and the US (Sergeant Sam Williams of Liberty), eventually banded together to form the last Super Aegis team, which they decided to name "R.O.J.A.K.", aiming to hunt down the space manticore to end its vicious streak and avenge their fallen comrades.

A Legend Reborn

In 2021, Rawa instigated an event known as the "Ascension", causing Titans to battle each other across the world in a berserk fury, intending to eventually slay the ultimate victor who claims the Giga Energy of the defeated Titans in the aftermath. As Gigaman and Thundatross departed Palekana Port with MechaJURAS, a massive lion Titan observed them from atop mountains. In the Chinese city of Yefan, Gigaman and Thundatross had to halt their pursuit of Rawa to defend the city from an onslaught of Titans. While the two heroes battled a Zyva, a nearby MechaJURAS unit sent a distress call warning of an agile Titan before failing to report back. Its attacker, Balzarr, revealed itself and used its ultimate attack, "Falling Demon Star", to slay the Zyva and temporarily disable Thundatross. As Gigaman prepared to face the unfamiliar threat, the R.O.J.A.K. Super Aegis Team, who had been pursuing Balzarr, arrived in the city as well. Together, Gigaman and R.O.J.A.K. defeated Balzarr, forcing the Demon Star to retreat by flying up into the sky.

Rawa and Balzarr fighting in their S-Class forms

Gigaman, Thundatross, and R.O.J.A.K. ended up tracking Balzarr down to the Yeti Sanctuary in Siberia, where it had taken down a few Zyvas and absorbed enough energy to attain its S-Class form. When the trio managed to overwhelm Balzarr, Rawa, now in S-Class form as well, arrived in Siberia to enact his plan, to slay Balzarr and gain all the energy it unwittingly collected conveniently for him. The two Titans clashed with each other, their vicious conflict resulting in a flash of light. Gaya, the entity that merged with the human Sho to become Gigaman many years before, stated that this explosive fusion resulted in the rebirth of their fated nemesis: Zargorah, the Devourer of Stars.

Gaya Gigaman and Zargorah's battle resulted in the two Titans sinking to depths of the Earth, leaving the fates of Gaya, Sho, Rawa, and Balzarr unknown.

Abilities

Physical abilities

Balzarr is capable of using its jaws and claws like a normal lion, though it is also equipped with a peculiar weapon, a spiny tail composed of several sharp, edgy, telescoping segments of golden armor, ending in a massive blade. Balzarr can split its scorpion-like tail vertically in half, and use it as some form of razor whip to stab, slash, grab, impale, and throw enemies and other objects, with the appendage granting it a reach advantage in close-quarters combat, allowing it to attack enemies before they can even strike back. It can also spin its tail around with the rest of its body to attack like a buzzsaw, or even "slingshot" itself forward at high speeds by stabbing its split tail into the ground and pulling back before releasing itself.

Most importantly, however, the tail is perfectly capable of supporting its entire body weight. With this, Balzarr is able to stab its tail into the ground, the vertical surfaces of uneven terrain, and even arena borders with enough force to damage and throw enemies back, perching on its tail to assume what is known as a "Predator Stance". From there, it can lunge at foes from advantageous angles, or launch itself at them by spinning like a buzzsaw.

Agility

Balzarr is said to be more agile than Gigaman and is capable of leaping immense distances, jumping many times its own height into the air. Using a technique called "Sky Piercer", Balzarr impales airborne foes with its tail and, in one swift motion, throws them to the ground and uses their momentum to spring itself into the air, exchanging positions with the enemy. Balzarr has also been described in official documents as flying like a comet, something shown early on in its DLC teasers. During the Ascension event depicted in A Legend Reborn, Balzarr is shown rocketing upwards and flying away by spinning its body vertically at high speeds.

Durability

Balzarr possesses golden armor nearly identical to that of Rawa, one of the first signs of the "celestial connection" they share. Balzarr's armor is incredibly durable, allowing the Demon Star to simply ignore the attacks of American Super Aegis teams.

Intelligence

Balzarr demonstrates a considerable amount of intelligence, targeting locations systematically and taking advantage of its agility to quickly assault and outmaneuver opponents before they can attack it back. In A Legend Reborn, Balzarr showed opportunistic tendencies like most predatory animals, traveling in Rawa's wake as the latter riled up other Titans and caused them to fight, with Balzarr finishing off the weakened victors to collect their accumulated Giga Energy, but wisely chose to retreat once it lost the upper edge against Gigaman and R.O.J.A.K..

Although both Rawa and Balzarr appeared to be working for the same goal, the two halves of Zargorah are actually uncoordinated, for, while Rawa deliberately planned the Ascension out, Balzarr only instinctually followed the concept, likely with no higher understanding of what it entails beyond fulfilling its own predatory urges,[4] thus leading to both titans to view each other as competitors to eliminate. It is therefore also unknown if they even knew what the outcome would be aside from growing in power, which is precisely what happened when they merged back into Zargorah.

Giga Energy manipulation

Balzarr can acutely sense the locations of Giga Energy sources and accurately hurl itself towards them. Balzarr also produces a sphere of Giga Energy for the taunt "Catch This!".

Flames and lasers

Several of Balzarr's melee attacks wreathe its body in bursts of reddish flames and explosions. These effects deal no damage and are purely aesthetic. Balzarr also produces a red laser from between the tips on its combined tail for the taunt "It's Play Time", though said beam is only an emission of harmless light, as it lacks the capability to scorch the ground and is therefore not weaponized.

S-Class form

After gathering a sufficient amount of Giga Energy, Balzarr achieves peak power to grow to massive proportions, gaining great power and enhanced abilities. Giga Energy is gathered through dealing damage to other Titans, or gathering it from the surrounding environment.

Falling Demon Star

For its ultimate, Balzarr begins quickly darting around the area, producing lingering glowing claw marks in the ground and rapidly striking any nearby enemies from many different angles before leaping into the sky and crashing down in the center of the arena, stabbing its blade into the Earth in a burst of flames.

Weaknesses

Balzarr is the only Titan in the roster with no ranged offensive capabilities beyond grabbing and throwing objects and enemies, as even Gorogong in his S-Class form can produce damaging shockwaves when slamming the ground, while Woolley can suck in opponents and projectiles at medium range to spit them out. Rawa and Balzarr's plates and claws are made of are the same golden metallic material, allowing both of them to tear through each other's armor.

Trivia

  • Balzarr's primary inspiration, Goldar, crossed over with almost all of GigaBash's Godzilla series crossover fighters (except Mechagodzilla) in Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and its sequel.
  • One of Balzarr's subspecies, "The Trickster", shares a similar name and color palette to Pipijuras' "Trickster" subspecies.
    • Another subspecies shares its name and general color palette with the Storm Shadow cruise missile.
  • Balzarr possesses some similarities to Starscourge Radahn from Elden Ring. Both characters are lion-themed and covered in ornate golden armor, primarily attack with a pair of giant blades, are heavily associated with both space and purple energy sources, and leap into the air before crashing down like meteors for their most powerful attacks. Additionally, Balzarr's S-Class form grows a red mane, similar to Radahn's red hair.
