— Lucía (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters)

Titan X (怪獣X,   Kaijū Ekkusu, lit. "Monster X"),[2] also known as Co-Cai, is a mythical Titan[3] who is the focus of the 2026 second season of Apple TV's Monsterverse television series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. She first appeared the season's premiere episode, "Cause and Effect".

Name

Apple TV revealed Titan X's name in a press release accompanying the release of a trailer for season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.[3]

Of the process behind naming the show's Titans, including Titan X, executive producer Tory Tunnell told SFX magazine:

"We've designed [a Titan], but only in the post process will we say, 'Okay, let's come through and see what that will be.' And that is really fun. There are always some outrageous contenders, like 'How did this end up on the list?', and then sometimes that's exactly the one we go with. We're always trying to have the names be somewhat intuitive, or [in this case] feel like it's a more Latin-based name. We're thinking about what makes sense, and then you always have a code name, and then suddenly it just feels like that's the name".[4]

The cult that worships the Titan refers to her as Co-Cai, a name possibly derived from Coi Coi-Vilu, the god of water in Mapuche mythology.

Development

When the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was in early production, the production team knew they wanted to feature an aquatic creature. The base inspiration for designing Titan X was the Portuguese man o' war, with the main body of the creature reminiscent of the hydrozoan's gas-filled pneumatophore. Other sources of inspiration included cephalopods such as squids and octopuses, while the Titan's face was modeled on moray eels and crocodiles. Additionally, the large spines protruding from Titan X's body were loosely inspired by the crown-like crest of the Xenomorph queen from the Alien series to give a sense of regality to her design. Creature designer Steve Boyle, who also created a 1:1-scale practical model of the Scarabs for VFX reference, sculpted pieces of Titan X to have the same texture, color, and translucency as them to display their symbiotic relationship. iPad and iPhone LIDAR scanners were used to scan the environments that Titan X's CG model would be dropped into.[5][6][7]

Design

Titan X is a tentacled, aquatic creature with a massive snaggletoothed reptilian head. She has a glow throughout her body that can change between its typical blue coloration to red when the Titan is enraged. Her hide is adorned with rows of sharp pointed purple crystals, some of which emerge from the back of her head and beneath her chin. Titan X's skin is a dark pale blue with a faint mauve color on her translucent back. The Titan's six tentacles are armed with enormous hooks like those of a colossal squid, albeit serrated on two edges and covered both their top and bottom sides. The front pair of tentacles branch into two around their halfway point. Sets of tendrils similar to that of a Portuguese man o' war emerge from her underside. Three curved siphon-like tubes extend out from each of the creature's sides. An armored plate rests on the Titan's back and ends in a sharp point. Her tail is short and resembles a downward pointing blade. Titan X possesses a pair of crystalline horns which curve backwards on her snout. Titan X possesses two glowing blue eyes that each possess a pair of irises and pupils merged together like a sideways "8", similar to a pathological condition in humans known as polycoria.

Personality

Titan X appears to be peaceful by nature and is driven primarily by migratory and protective instincts. She possesses a close symbiotic relationship with the Scarabs, providing them protection and transport in exchange for their total subservience. When the Titan arrived to Santa Soledad in 1957 amidst the scattering of dormant Scarabs on the island, she initially swiped at Lee Shaw and Keiko Randa, but calmed down as soon as the Scarabs joined her in the water, and peacefully regarded the two humans before leaving. Upon being unleashed from Axis Mundi in 2017, Titan X immediately fled Skull Island and ignored the pursuit of both Kong and Outpost 18. However, she became aggressive to the latter when she heard the call of a Scarab that had stowed away onboard; she was again pacified when Shaw returned the Scarab to the sea. Titan X was also driven to sink a Monarch patrol boat while picking up Scarabs from American Samoa.

Due to Titan X's accidental removal from Axis Mundi, she set off on her migratory route years ahead of schedule. When she returned to Santa Soledad, she responded passively to an approaching Cate Randa, but was enraged after Apex Cybernetics failed to control her using electrifying missiles, and wiped out the company's encampment. This event also disturbed the Titan's migration, knocking her off her course. Cate ultimately discovered she possessed a psychic connection with Titan X, and used this ability to characterize her as "panic[ked]" and "lost" based on the sound of her cries. When Titan X later laid and brooded an egg in Australia, she seemed to ignore Shaw driving around and setting up a Suzuki device nearby, and though she prepared to attack Cate when she got close, she stood down when she sensed no harm. However, she was decidedly combative when confronted by Godzilla. Nonetheless, she broke away from the fight upon noticing her egg being carried away by a helicopter in Isabel Simmons' employ. Being driven by her motherly instinct, Titan X relentlessly chased her egg back to Skull Island. Once she arrived at Skull Island's storm wall, she briefly stopped her pursuit to climb up a seastack and exchange roars with Godzilla, as if she was communicating with him. Understanding her intent, and having steered her back onto her migratory route, Godzilla departed. Her continued pursuit of the egg on land led her into a trap Isabel Simmons had set at her secret base. Seeing Isabel and Kentaro Randa on a nearby catwalk, she immediately became hostile towards them, but she was put to sleep with anesthetic gas before she could attack the pair. While she was asleep, Isabel's forces attached more neural implants onto her body and used them to spike her aggression, causing her to become hostile to everything around her. Not even Cate's presence was able to calm her down while she was in this enraged state. When Kong showed up, she attacked the Great Ape with her full fury. Luckily, upon seeing her egg, her motherly instincts kicked in again, and she was able to resist and disconnect herself from the neural link. After retrieving her egg, she bowed her head to Kong and showed him the egg, as if apologizing for her previous actions. Kong seemed to understand Titan X's motivation and allowed her to continue on her way, but the neural implants had scrambled her brain, throwing her off course from her migratory route again. After Cate used her mysterious connection to Titan X to help guide her back on course, Titan X reached out to touch the human's hand with one of her tentacles in an apparent expression of gratitude before departing for Axis Mundi.

Origins

Prior to 1957, Titan X and her Scarabs would migrate a set path around the Pacific Ocean linked to geothermal rifts and magnetic anomalies every 15 years. Frequent stops along her journey include Skull Island, the coast of Japan, and the area that would be Santa Soledad in Chile before eventually returning to Axis Mundi to hibernate. Sometime after people settled on the island of Santa Soledad, they witnessed this migration and came to worship Titan X as a deity. On the other hand, the residents of a remote village in Japan saw the Titan as a malevolent yokai who possessed unwary victims. In truth, the women who heard the Titan's song willingly sought her out in order to better hear her calls, actions that were incorrectly interpreted as signs of madness.

Titan X in Santa Soledad

In 1957, when Bill and Keiko Randa and Lee Shaw were investigating Santa Soledad, Lucía revealed the connection the village had to Titan X and the Scarabs, showing them a cave painting with the Titan. "Cause and Effect" Bill theorized that these cave paintings also tracked Titan X's migration routes and went to Santiago to confirm it, while Keiko and Lee remained behind to continue investigating the village. Later that night, following the Santa Soledad festival, Titan X arrived in the waters outside Santa Soledad, initially attacking Keiko and Lee as they attempted to escape the village. "Resonance" Just as fast as the Titan's wrath was incurred, however, Titan X quickly calmed down and departed for the open ocean with her cohort of Scarabs. "Secrets" Between 1962 and 1964, Bill mapped out Titan X's migration route. "Trespass"

In 2017, Cate, Kentaro, and Hiroshi Randa and May Olowe-Hewitt used a Suzuki device to rescue Lee from Axis Mundi by generating a portal between it and the surface at an Apex Cybernetics base on Skull Island"Cause and Effect" In doing this, however, they accidentally awakened Titan X, prematurely triggering the Titan to embark on her migration, which would otherwise not have been due to start until 2023"Furusato" Titan X emerged from a mountain in Axis Mundi, and passed through the portal with Lee. Soon after, Titan X killed Natalia Verdugo, before taking to the ocean around Skull Island, with Kong in close pursuit until the ancient Titan reached waters too deep for Kong to follow. "Cause and Effect"

Titan X continued across the Pacific Ocean, and Monarch followed her aboard Outpost 18 at Lee's insistence. Titan X was approaching the Strait of Malacca in the Indian Ocean when she increased speed, endangering several vessels gathered in the strait, and so following an impassioned plea from Keiko, Outpost 18 increased speed to follow it. A drone was sent from Outpost 18, modified to produce a low frequency to try and lead Titan X away from the strait, but Titan X destroyed it and continued on her course. However, a Scarab within Outpost 18 sent out a vibration from within the ship, causing Titan X to turn back to retrieve the Scarab, heading straight for the Monarch vessel. Lee took the Scarab onto an inflatable boat, leading Titan X away from Outpost 18 before jettisoning the Scarab into the ocean. As Titan X was retrieving the Scarab, it generated a large wave that almost engulfed Lee's boat. Eventually, the Scarab swam onto Titan X's body as the Titan swam alongside it, joining a number of other Scarabs. "Resonance"

Titan X eventually became known to the public when a video sighting of her traveling through the Pacific was broadcast during a Titan alert in San Francisco"Secrets" Shortly after, Titan X passed by Ofu Beach in American Samoa, where she awakened more Scarabs and sank a Monarch vessel before departing. Keiko, Hiroshi, Kentaro, and Lee found Bill's map of Titan X's migration route in Apex Cybernetics' headquarters in Pensacola, Florida, and based on the map Keiko inferred that Titan X would next pass Santa Soledad. "Trespass"

Titan X observing Cate Randa

Apex Cybernetics set up camp on Santa Soledad ahead of Titan X's arrival with a plan to control her with a neural implant, and the Randas and Lee arrived shortly after to stop them. In the Pacific Ocean, Titan X swam past Outpost 18 on her way to Santa Soledad, and the Monarch vessel followed after. The Great God of the Sea arrived off the coast of Santa Soledad as Scarabs took to the oceans to reunite with their master. Cate, drawn to Titan X in a trance-like state, wandered onto the pier right in front of the Titan. A drone launched by Apex Cybernetics, which carried a projectile that would inject the neural implant into Titan X, flew around the Titan, though only briefly pulled her focus away from Cate. Then, the drone fired the projectile at Titan X, which embedded itself in one of the Titan's tentacles as she attempted to guard herself. The neural implant sent electric currents across Titan X's body as the implant attempted to upload a synaptic link, causing the Titan pain; however, Titan X's nervous system proved too large for the synaptic link to upload. Scarabs crossed Titan X's body to the tentacle with the neural implant and chewed off a portion of the afflicted tentacle, removing the device. Titan X, now enraged, unleashed her fury on surrounding structures, be it buildings in the abandoned village or Apex's tents, during which she inadvertently threw Cate and killed Hiroshi as they attempted to flee. With that, Titan X departed once more. "Furusato"

Visiting the rift in Mount Osore, Shaw and Dr. Suzuki made contact with Shaw's past self when he was trapped in Axis Mundi in the failed 1962 Operation Hourglass voyage. They convinced the younger Shaw to embed a tracker into Titan X while she was hibernating. The tracker then appeared on Titan X in the present, allowing Monarch to discover that she was headed towards the desert coast of Australia"String Theory" While the U.S. prepared to fire a nuclear missile at the Titan, Monarch sent Cate, Keiko, and Kentaro to better assess the situation and get Titan X back on her migratory path. While initially hostile to the intruders, Titan X quickly recognized Cate and proceeded to show her the reason for her change in behavior: guarding her recently-laid egg. The peace was shattered with the arrival of Godzilla, drawn to the region either by the Suzuki device Shaw had set up to lure him to the or Titan X veering from her migratory path. Despite the approaching threat, Titan X stood her ground against the King of the Monsters, and the two engaged in a brief but vicious battle. Kentaro advised Isabel Simmons' hired crew to steal Titan X's egg during the conflict. Noticing her offspring being carried off by a helicopter, Titan X immediately disengaged from the fight to get her egg back, with Godzilla giving chase in turn. "Separate Ways"

Titan X and Cate Randa part ways on Skull Island

Titan X followed her egg across the Pacific before arriving at the storm wall of Skull Island. There she perched on a sea stack and turned her attention to Godzilla, who rose out of the water to give a deafening roar. Having successfully managed to drive her back onto her migratory path, he then withdrew. Titan X made her way across Skull Island and eventually found her egg, but in doing so fell into Isabel's trap as she was sprayed with anesthetic gas. Her forces attached neural implants across the Titan's body. Isabel's ultimate plan was to control and use Titan X to access the Skull Island rift into Axis Mundi, but first she had to use the sea Titan to terminate Kong to prevent him from interfering. The neural link was activated once Titan X revived, spiking her aggression levels and causing her to let out a roar to draw Kong to her location. "Ends of the Earth" Kong quickly arrived and the two Titans sized each other up before beginning their battle. The two monsters were evenly matched throughout their drawn-out fight as they traded devastating blows and countered the other's attacks. The fight only came to an end when Titan X saw her egg, her motherly instincts overriding the neural link. Upon retrieving it, she bowed to Kong, who peacefully let her go after realizing she had simply been trying to look after her egg. However, the neural implants had distorted her sense of direction, and she struggled to find the rift back to Axis Mundi. Cate, Keiko, May, Tim, and Shaw assisted her, initially catching her attention with her own recorded call before Cate made psychic contact with the Titan to lead her back to the rift. Titan X and Cate reached out towards one another one final time before the Titan and her egg departed from the surface. "Where We Belong"

Abilities

Tentacles

Titan X possesses numerous powerful tentacles which she uses for both combat and mobility. Each tentacle is armed with serrated hooks and is strong enough to quickly pull a Monarch boat underwater effortlessly. She briefly held her own against Godzilla and managed to leave a laceration on the side of his neck. Titan X also appeared to be evenly matched with Kong during their fight on Skull Island, and used her tentacles to manhandle her opponent with ease, drawing blood when she struck him in the mouth. They also allow her to scale large cliffs and launch her entire body forward to pounce on an opponent.

Amphibiousness

Titan X is amphibious; though primarily aquatic, she also travels on land in Axis Mundi and Skull Island. She is capable of moving at over 40 knots in water, as observed by Monarch in "Resonance" and "String Theory." An Outpost 18 monitor in "Furusato" recorded a top speed of 49 after she passed beneath the ship, although the unit of measurement was not specified. Though slower-moving on land, she was nimble enough to duck under Godzilla's atomic breath when he fired it at close range.

Symbiosis

Titan X possesses a strong symbiotic relationship with her Scarabs. These small amphibious creatures ride on Titan X's body as she swims through the ocean. Together, the creatures protect and take care of each other. The Scarabs are even capable of unleashing a Sonic Cry that will call Titan X to their position when they are threatened. When Apex Cybernetics fired a control probe into one of Titan X's tentacles, the Scarabs aided Titan X by biting off a portion of the tentacle to remove the device. The Scarabs also helped Titan X build her nest in Australia so that she could lay her egg. Once the nest had been finished, the Scarabs' service to Titan X was over, and they burrowed back underground.

Durability

Titan X is incredibly resilient against physical blows. A powerful tail whip from Godzilla only stunned her for a moment, and she endured a protracted battle against Kong with no visible injuries. Titan X also resisted prolonged electric shocks aimed directly at her nervous system when Apex Cybernetics and Isabel Simmons both attempted to control her with neural implants. She held out long enough during Apex's attempt that her Scarabs were able to come to her aid. When Isabel controlled her, Titan X endured the implants electrical shocks all throughout her fight against Kong. Eventually, after seeing her egg, Titan X was able to manually override and disconnect herself from the neutral link through pure motherly instinct.

Regeneration

Titan X possesses the ability to regenerate parts of her body, as evidenced when the severed portion of her tentacle grew back after Apex Cybernetics failed attempt to control her in Santa Soledad.

Subsonic hearing

Titan X is capable of emitting and detecting subsonic frequencies, with Keiko Randa and Lee Shaw discovering that she reacts to sound.

Weaknesses

Titan X roared in pain from Apex Cybernetics's neural implant, forcing her Scarabs to tear off the tip of her tentacle where it was embedded. Titan X's protectiveness over her egg was exploited; after seeing that her egg was being stolen by a helicopter carrying it, she broke away from fighting Godzilla to pursue after it, following it all the way from Australia to a trap set up at Isabel Simmons' base on Skull Island, which put her to sleep with an anesthetic gas. This allowed for Isabel Simmon's team to attach more nerual implants onto her body. While Titan X was able to resist Apex and Isabels' attempts to control her with neural implants, the aftermath of both events scrambled the poor Titan's brain. This left her disoriented and threw her off her migratory route, requiring the intervention of outside forces to help get her back on track.

Roar

Titan X uses a roar similar to that of Mothra's, along with an assortment of bellows. In "Furusato," Titan X emits some growls that are similar to those of the MUTOs. In "Separate Ways", she uses some of Godzilla's growls while resting on the Australian shore and lets out female MUTO and unaltered Mothra roars during her battle with Godzilla. In "Where We Belong", Titan X uses some whale calls that were previously used for Cryptocledius in Godzilla: The Series before disappearing into Axis Mundi.
