— MechaJURAS (GigaBash) |
MechaJURAS (メカジュラス Mekajurasu) is a mechanical doppelganger of Pipijuras that appears in the 2022 video game, GigaBash. MechaJURAS was constructed by the Global Titan Defense Initiative (G.T.D.I.) alongside Pipijuras's alterations, created to defend against and even kill attacking Titans. Though present in Gigabash since the game's release, MechaJURAS was an unplayable Titan that served as an enemy in Story and Onslaught mode as well as a stage hazard in the arcade version of the Research Lab in Area 51, until the free MechaJURAS DLC on May 29, 2025.
Name
MechaJURAS's name is a portmanteau of "mecha" and "juras," the latter of which is taken from Pipijuras' name.
Development
The top half of MechaJURAS remained more or less the same throughout development. There were some different drill and grappling claw shapes attempted, as well as coloration and lighting, with one outright matching Pipijuras. The most significant matter of contention, however, was its lower half. Although most versions had a pair of trapezoid or triangle-shaped bases with tank treads like the finalized version, at least two versions had wheels, while two others had a pair of proper legs (albeit ending in flat tank treads rather than actual feet). Some early concepts also had it with a Type A socket on its back (matching a Type A power plug on the wall of a corresponding charging station) as opposed to the version chosen for the game, which is equipped with a pair of back-mounted batteries that are instead charged by a cable that connects to its rear booster via a Type D or M plug.
According to one of GigaBash's developers, MechaJURAS's tank treads and limited moves,[2] combined with Passion Republic's focus on bug fixes, prevented the team from making MechaJURAS playable for years.[3] The playable MechaJURAS added to the roster in May 2025 solved these issues by adding a second thruster on its underside to enable jumping, and including a proper basic attack, air attack, air grab, grab attacks and grab special, dash attack, ultimate move, and even a passive hovering ability.
Design
MechaJURAS is modeled after Pipijuras, and thus looks very similar, with the primary differences being its larger size, metallic complexion, flatter disc-shaped eyes instead of spherical compound ones, different hands in the place of "quad claws", and the presence of tank treads in the place of feet. The mecha is mostly grey, with thicker green plating around its chest, head, and lower body. For its left hand, it has a large, three-clawed Grapple Claw, while the other arm has a large Rocket Drill. Lights tip its stalks and line the mecha's body in areas corresponding to Pipijuras, while MechaJURAS's lower body has headlights.
In its S-Class form, MechaJURAS massively grows in size and is encased in much thicker armor that is lined with glowing segments and rectangular extrusions. However, while all three eyes of Pipijuras turn diamond-shaped in S-Class form, only the central eye of MechaJURAS turns diamond-shaped, while the other two remain circular.
Personality

All versions of MechaJURAS appear to be entirely pilot-operated, and thus lack personalities of their own. The pilot nevertheless makes the mecha quite expressive, performing patriotic salutes and comical motions, as shown in its various taunts.
In the story Project P.P.J.U.R.A.S., the mecha is piloted by a hotheaded, arrogant G.T.D.I. captain. In A Legend Reborn, the MechaJURAS unit that interacts with Gigaman and Thundatross has a more polite pilot,[note 1] as it immediately salutes the two and takes over the job of defending Palekana Port. Later, a MechaJURAS unit near Yefan City (possibly even the same unit) sent a panicked distress call while being attacked by Balzarr.
Origins
MechaJURAS appears to have been developed as part of the failing "Project P.P.J.U.R.A.S", which is focused on mind control devices meant to subjugate titans like its eponymous subject, as well as the creation of . However, the project had its funds cut before eventually being shut down by Adrian Renaud, a council member of the G.T.D.I. Central Command. Dr. John Adler, the organization's Weapons Research Chief, protested this supposed attempt to "save costs" on February 7, 2004, having been entrusted with the project by Dr. Reiner before the latter departed from the organization in 1998 to work for OtomaTEC, insisting that Project P.P.J.U.R.A.S. at least be allowed to finish, though, once on the field, the aforementioned project would ultimately result in Pipijuras breaking free from control, proving the project to be a failure.
However, many years later, spikes in Giga Energy heralded an increase in Titan activity (with one such case being the "Demon Star Incident"). In the wake of this, several defenders arose to protect humanity, like Thundatross of OtomaTEC, the international Aegis Program (of which R.O.J.A.K. proved to be the last and only successful result), and the veteran hero Gigaman, who has returned from his eight-year retirement, threatening the monopoly and corrupt power the G.T.D.I. had over the world's governments with its "protection services". Hence, with the instructions of his superiors, Adrien Renaud had the MechaJURAS project restarted. Dr. Adler brought up how 90% of the budget was spent on prototypes, as well as the complicated production, data analysis, critical bugs to fix, design tweaks for combat efficiency, and even the marketing, all in an effort to insist that, even with increased budget and twice the manpower, a minimum of two years is needed to realize the project. However, these pleas and logistic hurdles were ignored, with Adrien Renaud unreasonably demanding that the production be completed in a single year, along with every last feature that the Weapons Research team promised prior to the project's initial cancellation in 2004.
Once production was over, an initial wave of units were shipped to countries around the world to much patriotism and fanfare, with the overworked Dr. Adler hailed as a genius. Deemed to be the new face of entertainment, slated to receive many forms of merchandise and media appearances including a five-picture deal with "Universell Pictures", MechaJURAS was boasted by the G.T.D.I. as the "future of liberty" despite its admitted rudimentary features compared to Thundatross of OtomaTEC. The units are stored, transported, and deployed in metal crates lifted by heavy-duty aircraft and dropped on the battlefield, with these containers unlocking themselves to reveal the unit within before activation.

Project P.P.J.U.R.A.S
Pipijuras attacked its Area 51 home base after inadvertently being freed from the G.T.D.I.'s control by Gorogong, searching for the beacon for its ship. The G.T.D.I. attempts to still command the alien to no avail, with one excited, arrogant captain engaging Pipijuras with its human-built doppelganger MechaJURAS. The two fought, and Pipijuras eventually knocked MechaJURAS through the research lab, destroying its walls and exposing the beacon. Before it could seize back its property, however, it was reengaged by MechaJURAS, now in "overdrive" mode, reliant on its "Booster Impact" attack. Pipijuras defeated MechaJURAS again, the mecha's systems going critical and exploding afterwards. Thundatross arrived to stop Pipijuras, but the alien used the drill and grappling claw of its mechanical imitation as improvised weapons against the mecha and escaped.
Woolley's Misadventures
The G.T.D.I. noticed Woolley's presence in Palekana Port after the Yeti Titan defeated Gorogong, who had been menacing the region. The G.T.D.I. attacked Woolley with MechaJURAS and an onslaught of fighter jets, which the Yeti also defeated. MechaJURAS's defeat earned the respect of the local Yeti subspecies population, who celebrated the newfound peace due to the lack of military force.
A Legend Reborn
As Titans around the world went berserk due to Rawa's roaring, MechaJURAS units were deployed globally to defend cities and allow Gigaman and Thundatross to hunt down Rawa. One such MechaJURAS was deployed to Palekana Port and greeted the two heroes. While the MechaJURAS watched the pair depart, a lion-like Titan observed the three from atop nearby mountains.
While Gigaman and Thundatross defended Yefan City, China, from an onslaught of Titans, a nearby MechaJURAS unit (possibly the same one) sent a distress call warning of an agile threat, before becoming unresponsive afterwards, its fate ambiguous. Its attacker, the feline Titan Balzarr, soon revealed itself and joined the fray, followed by R.O.J.A.K..
Abilities
Grapple Claw
MechaJURAS's left arm bears a Grapple Claw tethered to a cable, which can be shot out at varying distances depending on how much it is charged to grab foes, though it can instantly be snapped at enemies within short range with no windup. The claw itself does no damage when grabbing opponents, though MechaJURAS can swing its claw to bludgeon adversaries at close range and spin it like its drill for additional damage.
MechaJURAS can also briefly fly by rapidly rotating its Grapple claw in the air, as shown in its taunt "Grapple Copter", similar to how Pipijuras could take to the skies by spinning its Quad Claws like helicopter rotors. However, this function seems to be unintentional due to MechaJURAS merely spinning uncontrollably when flying in this way, and it is rendered obsolete regardless given the dedicated booster under its body for aerial movement.

Rocket Drill
MechaJURAS is equipped with the Rocket Drill on its right arm, which it can use to pierce opponents with thrusting jabs and prolonged, electrified stabs, or fire as a projectile that explodes after drilling the enemy enough times. MechaJURAS appears to have an unlimited supply of Rocket Drills, as it immediately pops one out of its right arm as soon as it has shot a drill at its foe. How the mecha is able to store several drills is unknown, though this likely implies that the weapon is collapsible, and, as implied by its ultimate attack, expandable to large sizes. The original prototypes were able to hold and aim their drills (but not charge them, as the damage remains the same regardless of when it is fired), similar to how Zyva can move while charging its drill before firing. The current iterations simply fire their drills without holding and aiming them.
Mobility
By using its rear booster, MechaJURAS can move with bursts of extreme speed, which not only allow it to cover great distances, but also rush towards enemies with powerful momentum. Once enacted, this attack, called "Booster Impact", sets MechaJURAS into an "overdrive" state that renders it more resistant to damage while rushing to prevent it from being stopped. When doing this in S-Class form, MechaJURAS leaves temporary burning trails on the ground that can damage those walking in its wake. By revving them up in midair against foes, the tank treads themselves can also be used as weapons, with this technique being known as "Grinding Gear!".
Unlike the unplayable prototype version, the playable MechaJURAS possesses a second booster underneath it, between its two tank treads, granting it the ability to jump. Similar to Pipijuras, which can decelerate its descent by spinning its Quad Claws, MechaJURAS can slow its fall by starting up its bottom booster with a double jump, thus granting it limited flight as long as the booster is active.

Deflector Shield
MechaJURAS can create a "Deflector Shield" similar to Pipijuras's shield to block attacks and deflect projectiles, formed by raising and spinning its Grapple Claw. In prototype versions, this force field is violet, likely composed of Giga Energy as with Pipijuras. In the newer versions, however, this barrier is formed by discharged electricity and appears lighter bluish-white.

Refractor Beam
MechaJURAS can generate a ball of concentrated Giga Energy above its central eye stalk before firing it at a low upward angle as a short-ranged thin red laser. This attack has significant recoil, though this can be minimized by the mecha simply bracing itself against a wall before shooting.

S-Class form
As with all other playable characters in the game, MechaJURAS can gain Giga Energy by damaging other Titans, or by gathering it from the surrounding environment. Once enough Giga Energy is collected to reach peak power, MechaJURAS can summon parts from out of nowhere to increase its size to massive proportions, thus upgrading its overall power and enhancing its abilities, specifically by causing it to temporarily leave scorching tracks when performing "Booster Impact".
Titano Exterminatus
After absorbing enough power, MechaJURAS fires a Rocket Drill into the sky, where it dramatically grows and bores into the center of the arena. Some structures close by will be immediately destroyed, other objects further away can be struck by the debris that the drill flings out at high speed, and all present enemies are sucked into the drill, similar to the black hole summoned by Pipijuras's ultimate, "Cosmic Polarity", until the drill finally explodes and throws them outwards. This attack is known as "Titano Exterminatus" (spelled as "Titano Exterminare" on the official Passion Republic Games site).

Weaknesses
The non-playable MechaJURAS shows the shortcomings of an unrefined prototype. It can be heavily stunned by Rocket Drills, whether it is its own drill reflected back at it, or those shot by playable MechaJURAS units, with the latter able to keep it stunned until destruction by repeatedly firing drills at it uninterrupted. Due to the lack of a booster on its underside, the prototype MechaJURAS also cannot jump in any game mode except the classic version of Onslaught. Conversely, the playable variant has the issues of a unit that was mass produced, having been the result of rushed work that prioritized quantity over quality and was overall mismanaged. The playable MechaJURAS is smaller than the original, and can therefore be sent flying by strong attacks, unlike the non-playable variant, which only gets slightly thrown back by most attacks. Had the G.T.D.I. learned and combined the strengths of both versions with none of the weaknesses, MechaJURAS would likely have been a more formidable machine.
Both the prototype and the mass-produced units share common problems. As with Pipijuras, the mecha's force field is only a momentary pulse and cannot be prolonged, making it ineffective against sustained beams. Due to Dr. Kazuo Otoma's sheer distrust of the G.T.D.I. in spite of Dr. Reiner (who once worked for the organization before joining OtomaTEC) urging him to share his secrets with them, MechaJURAS also lacks the Gigatron Reactor technology and advanced pilot-assisting artificial intelligence used by OtomaTEC's own mecha, Thundatross, instead relying on a pair of back-mounted batteries and the sole control of a human pilot,[note 1] though neither of these traits can be exploited in gameplay. While it is a highly capable fighter in-game, even the normally prideful G.T.D.I. outright admits that MechaJURAS is primitive compared to other mechas lore-wise.

Trivia
- Despite being the old version of the machine, the MechaJURAS units spawned in the classic version of Onslaught can jump, dodge, and even block attacks. However, they lack a blocking animation, making it appear as if they are simply enduring attacks.
- Not counting the minions Rohanna summons (Pikki the Pear and the Royal Warden), differing models of existing characters (Thundatross Unit-02 in The Knight in Lightning Armor and Zargorah's second form), and titans that did not appear onscreen like the one involved in the 1970 Tokyo crisis,[note 2] MechaJURAS was the only non-playable Titan in GigaBash up until it was finally added freely to the roster in May 2025.
- MechaJURAS is the first of two titans to serve as a stage hazard, being spawned within the Research Lab arena. The other is Zargorah's second form, which lands on the northern end of the Fractured Earth arena from time to time. Unlike MechaJURAS, which fully exists within the arena and can be permanently destroyed, Zargorah only appears occasionally and stands just outside the arena before stabbing its tendrils into the center of the stage, which must be hit to prevent him from releasing a powerful pulse, as with its final attack in A Legend Reborn.
- The Research Lab MechaJURAS is the only titan other than Rohanna that can leave usable weapons after defeat, a Rocket Drill and the Grapple Claw for the former, the "Club of Malice" for the latter. Both characters, along with Skorak due to its detachable skull shell (which disappears upon its owner's defeat rather than lingering), are the only titans that leave weapons that other fighters can grab normally and use without deflection or special moves of any sort like Woolley's "Inhale". Unlike the other two, MechaJURAS only leaves weapons upon defeat and not before.
- The MechaJURAS skins P.P, RJ-78, and Banana are references to Pipijuras, the RX-78-2 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam, and the Minions from the Despicable Me franchise, respectively.
Notes
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 In A Legend Reborn, MechaJURAS's dialogue is represented by itself rather than its pilot, though, as R.O.J.A.K. (which has five pilots to compensate for the lack of onboard artificial intelligence like the one in Thundatross) is also represented by itself in dialogue boxes except for times when the individual pilot speaking is of importance, this is not enough to imply that MechaJURAS has its own AI, and it could simply be indicative of an anonymous pilot. This is supported by the fact that the GTDI lamented their inability to make AI on the same level as Thundatross, coupled with the overall "rudimentary" features of the mecha.
- ↑ The first titan attack, known as the "1970 Tokyo Crisis", alternatively known as "1970 Titan Crisis", is mentioned in the reports of Gigaman and the profile of the GGN Tower. Gerald Yong, the original writer of the game, confirmed that the titan involved in the event is not part of the game's roster.[4][5]
