Hellhawks (ヘルホーク Heruhōku) are winged creatures who appear in the 2021 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla vs. Kong. Denizens of Kong's temple in the Hollow Earth, they attacked him and a Monarch-Apex Cybernetics expedition after tremors caused by Godzilla's atomic breath agitated them.
Name
During the production of Godzilla vs. Kong, the Hellhawks were called Yoshuma.[1][4] Their final name was revealed on the packaging of a Playmates mini-figure.[5] According to the Japanese theater program for Godzilla vs. Kong, the Hellhawks' species is named Accipiter infernum (アクシピターインファーナム).[2] The Hellhawk’s scientific name comes from accipiter, the Latin word for hawk, and infernum, the Latin word for hell.
Development
The Hellhawks were inspired by the Pteranodon in the original 1933 King Kong film.[6] They were originally conceived as much larger monsters who would have destroyed the Ospreys Monarch sent to explore the Hollow Earth and given Kong a more serious fight.[1][3]
Design
Hellhawks resemble a cross between a bat and various species of predatory birds. Predominantly a dull yellow, Hellhawks have a ridge of raised spines running down their back, avian heads with hooked beaks, and orange-colored eyes.
Personality
Monarch classifies the Hellhawk’s behavior as that of a "destroyer,"[2] along with King Ghidorah, Rodan, Scylla, MUTO Prime, Camazotz, the Warbats, the Arachno-claws, Mechagodzilla, and the Skullcrawlers. Hellhawks keep their kills to themselves, as when a Hellhawk came down to try and have a meal from the fresh kill of another Hellhawk, the other Hellhawk proceeded to fly off with the Apex guard. All of the Hellhawks ceased their attack and retreated after Godzilla's atomic breath breached the temple.

Godzilla vs. Kong
When King Kong and a Monarch-Apex Cybernetics expedition entered a vast temple in the Hollow Earth dedicated to the great ape's kind, a flock of Hellhawks roosting in the ceiling took notice of them. After finding an axe that had belonged to his kind, Kong used the weapon to tap into a power source in the temple and charge it. Godzilla, arriving at Hong Kong, sensed this and fired his atomic ray into the ground towards the temple in an effort to breach the Hollow Earth. Agitated by the tremors, the Hellhawks became aggressive, then descended and attacked everything in sight. They merely irritated the massive Kong, but began to pick off Apex's guards. Two Hellhawks blocked Nathan Lind, Ilene Andrews, and Jia from reaching an HEAV to escape. One flew away with a guard, while the other turned its attention to the trio. Unarmed, Lind could only throw a rock at its head, angering it. The beast flew at him, talons raised, only to be knocked back as Godzilla's ray breached the temple. The rest of the Hellhawks fled.
Abilities
Flight
The Hellhawks are capable of flight at top speeds of 68 miles per hour, or roughly 109 kilometers per hour.[2]
Physical abilities
Beaks and talons
The Hellhawks use their beaks and talons to kill their prey. They can use them to perform two unique maneuvers, titled Berserker Beak (バーサーカービーク) and Talon Rush (タロンラッシュ).[2]
The impact of the creatures' talons is 4,400 pounds per square inch, or roughly 30,340 kilopascals.[2] They can also use their talons to effortlessly carry humans.
Echolocation
According to the Godzilla vs. Kong theater program, the Hellhawks are capable of echolocation, and can perform a technique called Sonic Lullaby (ソニックララバイ). They can produce frequencies as high as 200,000 hertz.[2]
