Dr. Deverich is the human antagonist of IDW Publishing's 2012-2013 comic series Godzilla: The Half-Century War.

Name

According to Godzilla: The Half-Century War author and illustrator James Stokoe, Dr. Deverich "may or may not be named after an amalgamation of two certain American filmmakers who made a shoddy monster movie in the late '90s."[1] This is a clear reference to Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who produced, wrote, and in Emmerich's case directed TriStar Pictures' GODZILLA.

History

Godzilla: The Half-Century War

"Ghana, 1975"

Dr. Deverich was an American scientist hired by the Anti-Megalosaurus Force to develop a device to repel Godzilla from populated areas. Prior to 1967, Deverich created the Psionic Transmitter, though the device only succeeded in attracting monsters instead. After his project was deemed a failure, Deverich took his research and disappeared, secretly weaponizing it and turning it into a monster beacon. In 1967, a Psionic Transmitter lured Godzilla to Vietnam and drew Anguirus to the surface, where the two monsters battled until the AMF's Colonel Schooler destroyed the device. After Vietnam, Deverich's Psionic Transmitters managed to awaken numerous monsters around the world. In 1975, he activated one of his devices in Accra, Ghana, where he broadcast himself from the basement of a television studio in an attempt to sell his devices as weapons. Just as he was beginning a new round of bidding, the Anti-Megalosaurus Force burst into the studio and attempted to arrest him. Deverich deftly heightened the intensity of his device and fled in the confusion as all of the monsters in Ghana converged on the AMF, allowing his escape.

"Bombay, 1987"

After the incident in Ghana, Deverich continued to secretly sell his Transmitters while avoiding the AMF, but was eventually spotted in Bombay in 1987 by AMF soldier Ota Murakami, who witnessed Deverich make a sale before pinning him to the ground at gunpoint. Murakami demanded to know where Deverich's Transmitter was, only for Deverich to point out that it was right behind them, considerably larger than previously models. In the years between the AMF encounters, Deverich had increased the range of his Transmitter one-thousand fold, which he admitted to be excessive yet impressive nonetheless. Before the AMF could shut the devise down, a crystal formation came from the sky, with SpaceGodzilla soon emerging from it. Deverich was swiftly arrested during SpaceGodzilla's attack while the combined efforts of Godzilla and Mechagodzilla stopped SpaceGodzilla. However, unbeknownst to anyone at the time, Dr. Deverich's device had summoned the attention of more monsters beyond SpaceGodzilla - Gigan and King Ghidorah, who began their journey to Earth from deep space.
