Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is a kaiju who appears in the 2021 Toho anime series, Godzilla Singular Point. He began life as a fully aquatic creature, Godzilla Aquatilis (ゴジラアクアティリス,   Gojira Akuatirisu), who was first teased in episode 3 of the series and later appeared unobscured in episode 6. Aquatilis evolves into a transitional stage, Godzilla Amphibia (ゴジラアンフィビア,   Gojira Anfibia), in episode 7 and again into the terrestrial Godzilla Terrestris (ゴジラテレストリス,   Gojira Teresutorisu) in episode 9. He assumed his final form, Godzilla Ultima (ゴジラウルティマ,   Gojira Urutima), in episode 10.

Regarded in Nigashio legend as the sea monster "Gojira," Godzilla was prophesied to bring the end of the world when the seas were stained red. The monster was first discovered by the crew of a submarine who had been stalked by it half a mile under the sea. When a school of Manda appeared in the waters off the coast of the Boso Peninsula, Godzilla followed them to Tokyo Bay, evading a Navy blockade in the process. Aquatilis came ashore in Tokyo, evolving into Godzilla Amphibia and continuing on through the city. After using an explosive blast that devastated the surrounding area, he formed a crystalline cocoon around himself, eventually emerging as Godzilla Terrestris. Godzilla Terrestris seemingly killed a large Rodan as he continued onward. Eventually, after being brought down by a bombing run, he evolved into Godzilla Ultima, unleashing his power on those who opposed him in the city.

Name

The name "Godzilla" is an official English transliteration of the name Gojira. A combination of the Japanese words gorira (ゴリラ), meaning gorilla, and kujira (鯨), meaning whale, it was given to the creature from the original due to one of the film's concepts describing it as "a cross between a gorilla and a whale."

An ancient depiction of the folklore creature Gojira spells his name in kanji as 古史羅, incorporating the Japanese word for "ancient history": koshi (古史). This spelling differs from that used for Godzilla in the 1954 film and Shin Godzilla, which was written 呉爾羅 but pronounced the same. Because 古史 is typically pronounced koshi rather than goji in modern Japanese, Mei Kamino and Yun Arikawa both misread the name as "Koshira."

The names of Godzilla Ultima, Godzilla Aquatilis, Godzilla Amphibia and Godzilla Terrestris were all first revealed on their Bandai Movie Monster Series figures; none have yet been named within the series itself. Prior to episode 6's airing, the series' official website listed Aquatilis as simply "???."[3] Ultima, aquatilis, and terrestris are all Latin words, meaning "last," "aquatic," and "terrestrial," respectively. Amphibia is likely derived from the Greek amphibion, or Latin amphibium.

Prior to the government designating Aquatilis as "Godzilla," he was referred to simply as a giant organism (巨大生物,   kyodai seibutsu). The Singular Point website's description for him instead calls him a super-giant lifeform (超巨大生命体,   chō kyodai seimeitai).

Japanese fans have nicknamed this Godzilla GyuraGoji (ギュラゴジ), which is derived from Singular Point's title, specifically "Singular" (シンギュラ,   Shingyura), and Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

Godzilla Ultima resembles a massive, dinosaurian creature with large maple leaf-shaped dorsal plates on his back, segmented armored skin, small eyes, and pronounced fangs. His appearance is reminiscent of a theropod dinosaur (specifically a T. rex), having digitigrade legs and a slightly horizontal posture. His mouth is very large, and is lined with multiple rows of sharp teeth. His proportions are exaggerated, with a small torso and large legs to support his weight.

Godzilla Aquatilis resembles a cross between Godzilla and Titanosaurus, with influences from Mosasaurus. He possesses an elongated body with red skin, a beige underbelly and orange accents along its Godzilla-esque dorsal fins. Aquatilis has peculiar, fin-like forelimbs which are adorned with several claws. His overall face shape resembles that of Godzilla Ultima, but with antennae similar to Titanosaurus', fins protruding from either cheek, and a single larger fin sitting atop his head. He also has a long tail which terminates with a splayed fin.

Godzilla Amphibia strongly resembles Varan crossed with Godzilla. In this form, his tail now has three barbs instead of a splayed fin while his hind legs are smaller than his forelegs. His head strongly resembles Varan's while a row of Godzilla-esque dorsal fins are carried over from his Aquatilis form, though are framed with Varan-esque spikes on the neck and tail. Like Varan, his back is covered in a knobby scaled carapace, with these scales also running along his limbs, with his underbelly being smoothly textured.

Godzilla Terrestris is reminiscent of Gorosaurus. In this form, he has green skin with a yellow underbelly, an elongated face with a large lower jaw and eyes set very forward on his skull close to the snout.

Origin

The earliest record where Godzilla appeared prior to the events of Singular Point was in Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture, where he was recorded in an Ukiyo-E Mural as “Gojira”, a massive sea monster that is prophesied to bring the end of the universe when the seas turned red in an event simply known as “The Catastrophe”.

In Episode ten, it was revealed that Godzilla’s second appearance was somewhere in the 1950’s, where he destroyed a small fishing village in Misakioku, but was eventually kill through unknown means. However, it seems that a majority of records and memories of the existence of the monster were lost during the events of World War II.

In Episode 11, it is revealed that Godzilla’s bones were discovered by Michiyuki Ashihara, a scientist that survived Godzilla’s initial attack on the fishing village and hid it under what would eventually become Misakioku headquarters in the 2030’s. Following his initial disappearance in the 2030’s, Misakioku carried out Michiyuki’s will for the next fifty years, keeping Godzilla’s bones a secret, and to monitor the signal it emitted in the form of a song that originated in India: Alapu Upala.

Godzilla’s next appearance was in the 2030’s, shortly after the Radio Wave monster, Rodan appeared during the Summer Moon Festival and attacked the locals. He first appeared as a marine-dwelling monster as his first form, Godzilla Aquatilis. Similar to how Salunga, Manda, and Rodan, Godzilla is a Singular Point that emits Red Dust around his surroundings, terraforming the very Earth, altering wildlife, and even bedding space-time itself.

As Godzilla Aquatilis, Godzilla was hunting a swarm of Manda’s eventually killing one of them before making landfall in Tokyo. As he made landfall, Godzilla altered its DNA even further and evolved into a more terrestrial-like form similar to how tadpoles evolve, Godzilla Amphibia, where he began to produce even more Red Dust from its body. The military launched an attack on the monster as it was firing a flammable vapour from its mouth. The vapour caught on fire, surrounding the creature in a fiery explosion and charred it in place.

It was later determined that Godzilla was in a cocoon-like state and later emerged after another failed attack by the military in the form of Godzilla Territistris, where he gained the ability to fire “halos” of energy infront of his mouth. Eventually Godzilla, evolved into his final stage, Godzilla Ultima, where he generated even more red Dust that blanketed the entire city in an endless red cloud, reshaping reality all around him.

History

Reiwa era

Godzilla Singular Point

"Tigerish"

900 meters beneath the sea, a large creature was detected moving swiftly on the radar of a nearby submarine. An operator onboard confirmed that the creature was screeching at the sub, and soon began approaching it rapidly.

"Enfatico"

Godzilla Aquatilis, while hunting a swarm of Manda, encountered a JMSDF blockade. The monster leapt over the ships and continued after the Manda.

"Omniarch"

Godzilla Aquatilis made landfall in Tokyo, engaging in a brief struggle with one of the Manda. After killing it, he took on a second, transitional form better suited to terrestrial environments.

"Graftage"

Godzilla Amphibia engaged in a brief battle against the military. As soon as the tanks stopped firing, Godzilla released a flammable vapor freezing the area of where it breathed. When a tank shell hit Godzilla's face, the blast was absorbed into a vapor causing it to explode and create a giant mushroom cloud reaching a height of 500 meters. Godzilla was burnt, but created a shell of his second form and began evolving once more inside of it.

"Erumpent"

The JSDF bombed Godzilla in his cocoon-like state. The shell started to fall apart as a new form of Godzilla emerged: Godzilla Terrestris. As Godzilla made his way throughout the city, again spreading massive amounts of red dust, he vomited blood. Two more JSDF bombs managed to injure him, spilling massive amounts of blood. As the third closed in, massive tentacles emerged from the wound, enveloped the missile, and smothered the explosion. The wound rapidly healed. Now aggravated, Godzilla's dorsal fins flashed blue as a blue halo of energy appeared in front of his mouth. As it dissipated, Godzilla generated a titanic plume of red dust.

"Encipher"

Godzilla Terrestris continued his rampage throughout Tokyo when he was briefly intercepted by a large, black Rodan, which he instantly shot down with an atomic breath ring. That night, the JSDF ordered an bombing run, which briefly brought the kaiju down, only for him to evolve once more into Godzilla Ultima and get back on his feet. JSDF tanks began to fire at the kaiju but only succeeded in enraging him. He destroyed them with his atomic breath, then used it to cleave through several buildings.

"Relaunch"

As Godzilla Ultima continued his trek through the streets of Tokyo, he engaged in a brief fight with a Manda which coiled around him and bit his neck. Enraged by this, Godzilla utilized his atomic breath to decapitate the serpentine kaiju before proceeding to use it to destroy the other buildings in the surrounding area. A flock of Rodan flew past Godzilla as he continues to shamble forward.

"Explorer"

Godzilla walked to Tokyo Station, where he created a funnel around himself and grew to 100 meters in height.

"Together"

Jet Jaguar and Yun Arikawa found themselves between a flock of Rodan and Godzilla Ultima himself. Godzilla utilized his atomic breath to obliterate the flock, forcing Jet Jaguar and Yun to crash-land on his back. The duo end up falling off and became separated, the fall attracting Godzilla's attention. Godzilla prepared to blast Yun with his atomic breath, but Jet Jaguar, having received a code which allowed it to grow to massive size, fought Godzilla until he begins blasting the robot with his atomic breath. As Jet Jaguar died, it released a code that caused Godzilla to disappear and his Archetype to become blue crystals.

Abilities

Atomic breath

Godzilla Ultima using his atomic breath to decapitate Manda and destroy nearby buildings

Both Godzilla Terrestris and Godzilla Ultima have the ability to fire his signature atomic breath. Instead of a ray, Godzilla Terrestris's atomic breath takes the form of a large blue ring of nuclear energy which forms in front of his mouth. It proved powerful enough to knock a large black Rodan out of the sky, seemingly killing it. Godzilla Ultima's more focused atomic breath is a condensed blue-violet beam of ionized radiation that destroyed a column of JSDF tanks and cleaved straight through multiple buildings, and was potent enough to leave large areas of buildings destroyed and engulfed in flames. The atomic breath is also strong enough to slice straight through a Manda with ease. After Godzilla's growth spurt to a staggering 100 meters, his atomic breath increased considerably in power, with it slicing a building in half in mere seconds and blasting a hole straight through a supersized Jet Jaguar's face, and killed him when fired at a point-blank range. Godzilla's dorsal spines glow, flickering from neck-to-tail, unlike most other Godzilla incarnations, whose spines operate the other way around.

Amphibiousness

Godzilla Aquatilis swimming.

Godzilla Aquatilis is an adept swimmer, able to traverse the sea at speeds of at least 50 knots but can reach speeds of 80 knots, while Godzilla Amphibia, Terrestris, and Ultima are all able to travel on land.

Pressure resistance

In addition to Godzilla Aquatilis' high maneuverability, he is able to withstand significant underwater pressure, stalking a submarine at depths of 900 meters.

Evolution

Godzilla Amphibia's cocoon.

Godzilla Aquatilis was able to assume a second, amphibious form after making landfall in Japan. Shortly after, Godzilla Amphibia formed a cocoon around himself before taking on his Terrestris form. He evolved into Godzilla Ultima during an attack by the JSDF. This form soon grew to over 100 meters tall while idling near Tokyo Station.

Flammable ice vapor

Godzilla Amphibia firing the flammable ice vapor.

Godzilla Amphibia can breath a flammable vapor that has a temperature of -20 degrees Celsius. If ignited, the vapor creates a massive explosion about 500 meters tall. Following the explosion, Godzilla freezes in place, his skin becoming charcoal black in color. It is stated in the same chapter that this is just a temporary effect, like a chrysalis, in order to protect himself.

Durability

Godzilla Amphibia is unharmed by tank shells.

Godzilla Amphibia has shown a great amount of resistance to Type 16 maneuver combat vehicle gunfire, not even being fazed by being struck in the face and other parts of his body. Godzilla Terrestris was injured by JSDF bombs, which drew a significant amount of blood. Godzilla Ultima was also able to shrug off Type 10 Tank fire completely and most of the supersized Jet Jaguar's attacks seemed to only annoy him. Although he was injured by Manda’s bite, this was before Godzilla grew to 100 meters.

Archetype production

Godzilla Aquatilis manipulating Archetype.

In all of his forms, Godzilla expels large amounts of Archetype from his skin in the form of thick red dust, creating a dense cloud of it around him. Godzilla Terrestris expelled an even larger plume after generating a blue halo of energy in front of his mouth.

Blood tentacles

Godzilla Terrestris using Blood Tentacles to protect itself.

Godzilla Terrestris was able to extend the blood from his wounds into multiple tentacle-like formations that were able to catch a bomb out of the air and smother its explosion.

Regeneration

Godzilla Terrestris regenerates.

After retracting his blood tentacles into his body, Godzilla Terrestris rapidly healed from the injuries caused by the two JSDF bombs. Godzilla Ultima's regeneration is much faster, as it immediately regenerated after it successfully killed a Manda.

Terraforming

Godzilla Ultima terraforming Tokyo

Godzilla's Archetype is able to create bizarre plant-life over a period of time when its surroundings are exposed to Archetype in the form of the red dust. This menagerie of strange plant life is able to distort dimensions such as space. Godzilla Ultima can also alter local wildlife in this way.

Physical abilities

Godzilla Aquatilis killed a Manda by biting and eating the creature. During (the 100 meter) Godzilla Ultima’s fight with the supersized Jet Jaguar, he briefly bit into the robot’s arm with his jaws and violently shook it. Although this wasn’t very successful in doing any serious damage, Ultima later knocked the machine down to the ground with a swing of his tail.

Roar

Godzilla Amphibia utilizes Varan's roars, which are themselves a Rodan screech mixed with altered 1954 Godzilla roars. After evolving into Godzilla Terrestris, he uses the 1984 Godzilla's roar, occasionally mixed with Godzilla's roars from the Millennium series. He let out one of Varan's roars mixed with a Showa Godzilla roar after being hit by a bomb. Godzilla Ultima's roars, just like Godzilla Terrestris', are a combination of the roars used by Godzilla in the early Heisei series and the Millennium series, sometimes mixed with his roars from the Showa series. He used a Showa roar when firing his atomic breath rings. Each form also shares a pair of unique growling sounds.

The atomic breath sound effect from Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack was used when Godzilla Ultima decapitated a Manda with his atomic breath.

Notes

  1. In Netflix's subtitles for episode 12 of the series, Colonel Matsubara states that Godzilla "[has] been growing and is now over 100 meters in height." However in the English dub, this is changed so that he says Godzilla "[will] soon breach 100 meters in height."
