Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

In the past, Caroline met a man named Hiroshi Randa and married him, with Caroline giving birth to their daughter, Cate, settling down in San Francisco; Cate eventually became a teacher there. Caroline believed that Hiroshi merely programmed software for satellites and remained unaware of the true nature of his work as he divided his time between the U.S. and Japan.

In 2014, shortly after the battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs in San Francisco, Caroline and Cate heard that Hiroshi's plane had been lost in a storm somewhere around Fairbanks, Alaska. With Hiroshi presumed dead, Caroline pushed Cate to venture to Tokyo to settle his affairs there, which she eventually did in 2015. Just as Cate arrived at her father's residence, Caroline called her and reprimanded Cate for not calling her immediately after landing. Cate went on to discover another family living in her father's apartment; Hiroshi's second family that Caroline and Cate did not know of. After leaving the apartment, Cate received another call from Caroline, though Cate attempted to dodge her mother's questions on what she found in the apartment. After asking Caroline if she knew about what she would find in the apartment, Cate's call was interrupted by an evacuation alert. "Aftermath" Cate later called her mother again to inform her that she was returning home, as there was nothing in Japan for them. However, after discovering some mysterious files in Hiroshi's office, Cate found herself being targeted by the mysterious organization Monarch, who Cate came to believe her father worked for; she reluctantly teamed up with her half-brother Kentaro and hacker May Olowe-Hewitt in the pursuit of answers. "Departure"

Eventually, the trio's journey led them back to San Francisco, as Cate wanted to search Hiroshi's office in the city. Caroline's work friend James picked the trio up at the airport and brought them to FEMA housing in Alameda Point. Upon arrival, May and Kentaro attempted to go on a walk so Cate could ease Caroline into her discoveries about Hiroshi, though they found themselves face-to-face with her as she joyfully reunited with Cate. Cate proceeded to blurt out Kentaro's full name; Caroline was rattled but attempted to be hospitable. She explained to her guests that she and James worked to recover clients' personal items from San Francisco. After Kentaro attempted to help Caroline move some things, her façade started to crack and she snapped at him, prompting Cate to usher May and Kentaro into her room so she could discuss the revelations concerning Hiroshi with her mother in private. Caroline confirmed that she long suspected Hiroshi's infidelity, which left Cate angry that her mother sent her instead of going herself. Caroline explained that she felt compelled to send Cate, as she barely left her room since surviving her encounter with Godzilla; she felt Cate was slowly killing herself with grief. Cate grimly acknowledged that she succeeded in giving her something to live for and asked to be smuggled into San Francisco.

That night, Caroline payed off a guard to avoid having the inside of the truck inspected before releasing Cate, May, and Kentaro in a secluded area. Caroline and James left them with supplies, warning them to avoid being caught and to be back by morning. The trio eventually made it to Hiroshi's office and found a map, giving them their next possible destination in their search for answers before returning to Caroline and James just before daybreak. Afterwards, outside Caroline's house, Cate asked about Caroline's relationship with James, with Caroline revealing that James was waiting for her to be ready for another relationship. Cate encouraged her mother to move on from Hiroshi. Caroline admitted that she could have done more to discover his double life and apologized for putting Cate through this. Cate shared that Hiroshi was still alive and worked for a secret monster-hunting organization, shocking her, though Cate revealed her intent to find him. "The Way Out"

Cate's globetrotting adventure was cut short when she fell into a portal to the realm of the Titans alongside two of her allies. Afterwards, Hiroshi finally reemerged, at which point Caroline promptly divorced him. "Beyond Logic" A memorial service was held for Cate, who was presumed dead. "Trespass"

In 2017, Cate and her allies were rescued from the Titans' realm, with Cate soon returning to San Francisco to reconvene with her mother, who was overcome with emotion to see her. Cate stayed to have diner with Caroline and James, who was now her husband. James and Caroline both expressed interest in Cate's experiences, though Cate was reluctant to speak of it further and Caroline encouraged her daughter to share details at her own pace. Hoping to help Cate move on, Caroline suggested a meeting with her former teacher friends and optimistically told Cate that her experiences were behind her, though Cate was less certain. "Secrets"

After the appearance of Titan X triggered evacuations of the city, Caroline and James were preparing to leave their home when Cate declared her intent to return to Monarch and her allies, having realized she couldn't simply return to her old life while also feeling responsible for unleashing Titan X in the first place. Despite Caroline's protests, Cate remained resolute and hugged her mother goodbye, but promised her that she would return. "Trespass"
