I hate you, Mothra. You changed everything that day. For me... for my sister Emi... for all of us. I don't get to have a family anymore. All because you lost. I always heard you were the Queen of the Monsters. Some queen you are. Fifteen years later... and I'm still alone.

— Mira (Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1)

Mira is one of the protagonists in IDW Publishing's 2025 comic series Mothra: Queen of the Monsters. After seemingly losing her whole family to Mothra and Antra's first battle, Mira grew up with a deep hatred for the moth kaiju. However, she and her long-lost twin Emi ironically became instrumental in the ascension of a new Mothra.

Personality

After spending 15 years on her own in a post-apocalyptic landscape, Mira had become jaded and stern, focused on survival first and foremost. She initially had a great disdain towards Mothra for having lost against Antra and dooming the world to its current state, and was reluctant to help bring a new Mothra from the past to fix the world, until her sister Emi mentioned they could get their parents back in doing so. Eventually, Mira's resentment for Mothra began to thaw after the hatching of Mothra Gemini, as she was impressed at seeing the larva fearlessly facing off against Antra despite the odds. With the help of her sister, Mira continued to aid and train Mothra Gemini to finally defeat Megaguirus, and in the end let go of her hatred for Mothra.

History

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1

Fleeing from the battle between Mothra and Antra, Mira witnessed the deaths of both her parents and seemingly her sister Emi. Mira spent the next fifteen years surviving in a post-apocalyptic world now ruled by monsters on her own, blaming Mothra for having doomed the world to its current state when she fell to Antra all those years ago. After returning to her home from a routine scavenging run, Mira was approached by a cloaked figure: her long-lost sister Emi. She was accompanied by the Shobijin, who had come to ask Mira's aid in bringing a new Mothra into the world. Mira felt bitter that Emi had only sought her out after so many years to resurrect the same kaiju she had grown to resent, arguing with Emi until they were interrupted by a Meganulon attack. Mira managed to distract the creature with a shot to the eye from her slingshot, giving her and her sister time to hide as the ravenous beast moves on. Eventually, Mira agreed to the plan to bring about a new Mothra when Emi explained to her that they might be able to save their parents in the process. The two sisters harmonized with the Shobijin to open a portal into the prehistoric era, jumping through it as they began their quest.

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #2

Upon entering the prehistoric era, Mira and Emi were chased by a rampaging Anguirus, managing to escape when the armored kaiju was distracted by an attack from Gorosaurus. The twins fell under attack again by a Meganulon, but were saved by prehistoric Shobijin riding upon a Primitive Mothra. The two were led into an ancient temple and filled in on information regarding the Meganulon's queen Megaguirus and the ancient Mothra egg they came to retrieve. The two harmonized to bring the egg with them to the future, but something went wrong and the twins ended up in the city that would be the stage for the final confrontation between Mothra and Antra just before the monsters' arrival. Mira witnessed Megaguirus and her swarm flying through the portal to face down the original Mothra, Mothra Gemini hatching from her egg, Antra's arrival and subsequent battle with Megaguirus, and finally a younger Emi being led to safety by the Shobijin. Mira realized that she and her sister were indirectly responsible for Mothra's demise after bringing Megaguirus and her swarm with them, leaving the Queen of the Monsters too weak to battle Antra. She grew enraged over Emi keeping this secret from her, but her anger subsided after seeing sister's distress and the larval Mothra Gemini holding her own against Antra. Inspired by the young kaiju's determination, Mira told Emi that they still needed to put things right, and the two sisters fled the city with Mothra to train her to one day battle Antra and Megaguirus.

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #3

Mira instructed Mothra Gemini to attack a facsimile Megaguirus that Emi made for training purposes. Despite the larva successfully encasing her faux opponent with silk, Mira was skeptical that training against an opponent who could not fight back had merit, wondering instead how to get Mothra to transform into her imago form. The training was cut short by the arrival of Megaguirus and her swarm, the trio sheltering in a barn and narrowly avoiding the Dragon Queen. Mira told Emi to perform a song to travel back to the present. Instead, the trio ended up in the far future, where they witnessed MechaMothra battling Keizer Ghidorah, Desghidorah, and King Ghidorah. They were quickly escorted by ghostly versions of the Shobijin towards a cave harboring the Handmaidens of Antra, who lay dying. The two explained that Antra was created by the Earth itself to fight Megaguirus one day, but the Handmaidens' inability to communicate properly with the kaiju led to the monster lashing out in fear before killing Mothra. Mira and Emi related to the Handmaidens' guilt, and argued amongst themselves over their lack of harmonization. Mira coldly commented that their lack of harmony might come down to their long separation and Emi quickly giving up hope on her survival too quickly, seemingly accepting that they would be stuck in this alternate timeline. Emi, however, encouraged her to recite the song once more to get them back to the present, and the twins successfully returned to their time with Mothra, who quickly spun a cocoon in preparation for her metamorphosis. Taking this as a sign of hope, Mira and Emi crafted a new song with the help of the Shobijin to aid in Mothra's transformation. After performing the new song, the twins awaited Mothra's emergence, with a nonchalant Mira commenting that it likely did work to a worrisome Emi. Eventually, Mothra emerged in her imago form, but while the twins celebrated, they knew Mothra was still not ready to face off against Megaguirus. Thus, Emi and Mira asked the Handmaidens of Antra to call upon their patron kaiju in the hopes of granting Mothra a sparring partner.

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #4

Emi and Mira stood present at the arrival of Antra, initially hostile but calmed down by the presence of Mothra Gemini. Mira held the Handmaidens out to converse with Antra, and after a heartfelt apology to the kaiju, the Handmaidens announced that Antra had agreed to the alliance. Mira joined her sister and the Shobjin in training Mothra against all manner of kaiju to prepare her for the fight against Megaguirus, giving the giant moth tips to overcome her enemies. After running a gauntlet of kaiju consisting of Maguma, Titanosaurus, Gabara, Anguirus, Baragon, Manda, Varan, Rodan, and two rounds with Antra, Mothra emerged battle-ready from her trials. The night after her second, triumphant fight with Antra, Emi asked Mira what would happen to them after Megaguirus was defeated, as the return of Mothra and the Shobijin likely meant the two would be left to their own devices. Emi was unsure of such a future, as she had spent her whole life dedicating herself to the Shobijin's mission of restoring Mothra. Mira tried to ease her sister's worry with an offer to stay with her to rebuild and find other survivors, but Emi remained reluctant at such a prospect, and Mira stated that they should be focusing on the upcoming battle. Shortly after, Megaguirus made her grand entrance, now transformed into Omegaguirus from her siphoning of the elder Mothra's energy.

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #5

As Mothra and Antra began their battle with Omegaguirus, Mira, Emi, the Shobjin, and the Handmaidens all prayed for their success. Mira initially commented that it looks like the fight was in their favor, but quickly changed her stance when Omegaguirus overpowered both Mothra and Antra with her first attack. As the battle raged on, Omegaguirus seemed to have won the fight after mortally wounding Mothra and killing Antra. Mira, Emi, and the Shobijin then recited their song, granting the moth kaiju a second wind as the drones of Antra fused themselves to her forelimbs to form deadly claws. With this newfound strength, Mothra finished off Omegaguirus, Mira and Emi tearfully embracing as victory became assured. The two congratulated Mothra Gemini as she flew off into the distance with the Miniguirus that had emerged from Omegaguirus's corpse. As time passed, plants grew over the ruined city that Mira spent most of her life in, as she and her sister met other survivors. Despite what happened in the past, Mira made peace with the events that had transpired in her life, no longer hating Mothra and realizing she was never alone.
