— Cosmos (Godzilla vs. Mothra)

The Cosmos (コスモス,   Kosumosu) are tiny twin priestesses of Mothra who first appeared in the 1992 film Godzilla vs. Mothra, and returned in the 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.

The last remnants of an ancient civilization, the Cosmos lived with Mothra on Infant Island for 12,000 years after the ancient world was destroyed in a battle between Mothra and her dark counterpart Battra. They were kidnapped by Kenji Ando and brought to his boss Takeshi Tomokane, head of the Marutomo Company. Tomokane planned to exploit the Cosmos for publicity, but they summoned Mothra to Japan to rescue them. Afterwards, she matured into her imago form and joined forces with Battra to defeat Godzilla in Yokohama. The Cosmos then traveled with Mothra into outer space to intercept a meteor bound for the Earth. Two years later, the Cosmos sent a telepathic projection of themselves to Miki Saegusa on Earth to warn of SpaceGodzilla's impending arrival.

Name

In the Heisei series, Mothra's priestesses are renamed the Cosmos (コスモス,   Kosumosu) instead of the Shobijin, a term which also refers to the ancient civilization from which they hail in this continuity.

Personality

The Cosmos appear to be somewhat naïve based upon their interactions with humans, as they place their full trust in the first three modern humans they meet even though two of the three had ulterior motives and went on to kidnap the fairies in pursuit of personal gain. Nevertheless, the Cosmos never house any resentment towards even those who wrong them and continue to do all they can to make the world a better, safer place for all of humanity.

The Cosmos in Godzilla vs. Mothra

While investigating Infant Island at behest of the Marutomo Company, Takuya Fujito, Masako Tezuka, and Kenji Ando happened upon a ginormous egg before two tiny fairies revealed themselves to the trio, introducing themselves as the Cosmos. They explained that the egg belonged to Mothra, an ancient deity who protected the planet and a highly advanced human civilization that existed 12,000 years ago. However, after the scientists of this civilization created a device to control Earth's climate, the Earth itself retaliated and created a dark counterpart to Mothra named Battra. Battra destroyed the device and went on to wipe out most of this ancient civilization before being defeated by Mothra - but now, both Mothra and Battra have been revived.

Upon learning of the egg, Ando's superiors ordered that it be brought back to Japan to turn it into a tourist attraction, though Ando framed this order as a desire to better protect the egg in a controlled environment. The Cosmos put their trust into the humans and joined them on the journey to Japan, though their convoy was soon intercepted by Godzilla. The Cosmos could only watch as the egg hatched and the newborn Mothra was forced to battle Godzilla to survive. Soon after, the Cosmos witnessed the arrival of Battra, who took over the fight against Godzilla; both monsters were presumed dead after being consumed by an underwater volcanic eruption. While Mothra returned to Infant Island, the others continued their journey to Japan, but during a stop in Manila, Ando, fearing the repercussions of losing his company the egg, kidnapped the Cosmos and brought them to the Marutomo Company, who planned on turning them into a marketing gimmick. The Cosmos called upon Mothra to save them, at which point Fujito kidnapped them from the Marutomo Company to sell them to the highest bidder himself. Mothra eventually arrived and besieged Tokyo in search of the Cosmos, though with the help of psychic Miki Saegusa, Tezuka tracked Fujito down before he could depart. Fujito's daughter Midori convinced her father to free the fairies before imploring the Cosmos to stop Mothra. After being brought face-to-face with Mothra, the Cosmos told her that she could cease her rampage - but before she retreated, the military engaged her once again. Following this attack, the wounded Mothra cocooned herself on the National Diet Building.

Hours later, as Mothra awoke in her imago form, the Cosmos sang to her to help her emerge from the cocoon and told their human allies that she would fight Battra, who survived alongside Godzilla. The two divine moths battled until Godzilla appeared, quickly overpowering them both. The Cosmos again sang out to Mothra, glowing as she and Battra realized that they needed to work together against the greater threat. Proclaiming that the divine moths were now allies, the Cosmos watched as Mothra and Battra worked in tandem to defeat Godzilla, albeit at the cost of Battra's life. In the wake of the battle, the Cosmos revealed to their human allies that a meteorite was on a collision course with Earth, threatening to eradicate all life on the planet by the end of the century. Battra had intended on stopping it himself, but Mothra was now forced to take his place to protect the planet. With that, the Cosmos bid their friends farewell and joined Mothra as the divine moth journeyed into space.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

Two years after Mothra left the Earth to save it from a meteorite, Miki Saegusa was unexpectedly visited by a Fairy Mothra, who quickly transformed into a glowing projection of the Cosmos. The Cosmos warned Saegusa that a space monster was headed to Earth to kill Godzilla and begged her to prevent this from coming to pass, as the Earth would be defenseless without Godzilla. Fairy Mothra later visited Saegusa again on Baas Island so that the Cosmos could offer her words of encouragement, telling her that she was capable of bringing people together.

Following SpaceGodzilla's defeat, the Cosmos thanked Saegusa for her role in helping Godzilla stop the space invader before Fairy Mothra departed back into space.

Abilities

Telepathic abilities

Like their Showa counterparts, the Cosmos possess a telepathic connection not only to each other, but Mothra as well, allowing them to summon her to their location at will. They additionally share a direct connection with planet Earth itself, describing it as a living being.

The Cosmos are also capable of sending mental projections of themselves to others with the aid of Fairy Mothra.

Flight

After bidding their human allies farewell, the Cosmos levitated into the air and flew to the awaiting Mothra.

Other abilities

When Mothra's internal energy flows, the Cosmos' bodies glow with light, as demonstrated when Mothra shared her energy with Battra.

Upon leaving Earth, the Cosmos transformed their bodies into light as they "became one" with Mothra herself and disappeared into her body.
