Captive is the issue of Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. It was released on October 30, 2013.

Description

"On her first assignment, Lucy and her team witness the destruction caused as two foes collide. Plus, the mysterious alien alliance unleashes a new set of monsters, bent on the annihilation of our world."

Plot

In the Huanren Reservoir in China, Lucy Casprell and her team of megazoologists are being chased by the monster Varan. The Chinese military try to hold him off with assault rifles, rocket launchers, and mounted machine guns. Varan retaliates by destroying the armed forces and continues chasing them down. However, Jeremy pushes Kristin Sumres down to get a head start, and Lucy attempts to get her back up. When it looks like Varan is about to crush them, a strong gust of wind catches his attention as Rodan kicks the giant reptile into a mountain. Lucy and Kristina catch up with a rescue team and climbs into one of the trucks as they drive away while Rodan and Varan engage in battle. Varan grabs Rodan by his feet and slam him to the ground, slashing the Pterosaur's back with his claws. Rodan escapes and retaliates by off balancing Varan with winds from his wings. Rodan tackles Varan with his feet and they crash through a mountain before jet missiles break up the fight and force the monsters to destroy the attacking forces. As Lucy witnesses Varan gliding over them, she and her team are rushed into an underground mountain base, which was starting to buckle from the battle outside.

When inside, debris from the battle causes Lucy to go plummeting down a staircase, knocking her unconscious. When she comes to, she enters a door and finds a giant green monster in a liquid containment tank. Chinese soldiers arrive and hold her at gunpoint as a commander with a scar on his face comes in, telling her that her group is waiting for her in another room and that she shouldn't have seen this. He says the monster is called Gaira as he and his guards escort her to her team. Along the way, the commander explains that Gaira escaped the country that originally held him and that the Chinese lured him here during an experiment. When Lucy asks how they lured him and what kind of experiment they took part in, the commander simply states that Gaira's dangerous and due to the monsters fighting outside, they all need to find a safe place to hide. The commander explains that Gaira's previous hosts didn't survive his escape and that he needs to remain in captivity, stating that their only hope is to find his counterpart: Sanda.

When they arrive, Lucy almost immediately tells Professor Ando about Gaira, who snaps at the commander and tells him that this breaches international law, to which the scarred man replies that it's for protection against monsters like the ones that are attacking them right now and from nations that house their own monsters. The commander reminds Ando of the time Japan used pheromones to influence Kaiju in the South Pacific, with the professor stating that was an isolated incident. Ando asks the commander what nation has a Kaiju as a weapon, to which he replies that their intelligence reports picked up a distress call from a base in North Korea shortly after they conducted an acoustic studies experiment to lure monsters to China. When Lucy states there's another professor, the commander silences her. Ando warns him not to speak to his students that way, with the commander responding by punching Ando in the face and walking away. The commander tells them that they already know of Rodan and Varan in the area, and the team was brought in to locate Sanda. Ando asks why they trapped Gaira, and the commander describes the distress calls they heard. They captured Gaira by luring him with deer carcasses and putting him in a chamber flooded with water in hopes of making him docile, but the creature only seemed to adapt to it. He says that luring monsters is one thing, but controlling them is another. The commander reveals that he plans to talk about their involvement in the Mechagodzilla project, but now he has a problem to take care of. The commander leaves and as the team ponders what they should do next, Varan's head is smacked into the ground by Rodan, exposing the inside of the base and causing the whole building to crumble. Varan uses his back spikes to tear into Rodan's wing, injuring him and forcing him to retreat. Ando tells Lucy's team that they have to escape, but Lucy decides to go free Gaira instead. Once Gaira is freed, Lucy goes up to the surface and gets in a truck with her team as they head toward the airport. Just then, Gaira smashes Varan upside the head with a satellite dish and grabs his back spikes as they begin to fight. Gaira body slams Varan to the ground, and the reptile retaliates by biting into Gaira's arm. Gaira grabs Varan by his head and slams him down. Varan retreats and as he begins gliding away, Gaira grabs his tail and they fly out to the China Sea. Sanda watches them fly off before he locks eyes with Lucy and walks away. Later that day, Lucy and her team are at the airport waiting for their flight. Lucy sends text messages to her mother about the events that unfolded in China. As she sends the text, the Kaiju News Network on the television is broadcasting Godzilla, who's moving east across the California desert.
