One-Eye is a Great Ape and a member of Kong's species who appears in the 2024 Legendary Pictures film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Name

One-Eye's name stems from his defining feature, that being his singular functional eye. Like almost all of the named Great Apes, his name originates from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - The Official Movie Novelization.

Development

Like all of the known minor Great Apes sans Boots, One-Eye was most likely modularly constructed.[2]

Design

One-Eye primarily resembles his fellow elderly Great Ape, Gnarled Finger. One-Eye has two eyes, though one is glossy, blind, and is usually partially closed. His face is gaunt and wrinkled and he is heavily balding. The grey fur on his limbs and torso is more sparse and thin than that of frost of his kindred. He has a prominent and expressive eyebrow ridge. One-Eye's skin is grey with multiple pinkish scars dotting his body, and he is scrawny compared to many of the apes he's seen with. His head is also slightly rounder, his neck less bulky than his fellows, and his left ear has a notch taken out of it. Due to being of a higher rank in the Skar King's empire, a painted red stripe runs diagonally across One-Eye's chest.

Personality

One-Eye is a cruel and sadistic Great Ape, often seen smiling while carrying out the Skar King's will, regardless of whether or not it harms anything other than himself. He is also incredibly spiteful, ruthlessly attacking Kong and Suko after Kong repeatedly defeated him and Suko betrayed him. One-Eye is cunning, opting to avoid confrontation with Kong when it's disadvantageous to him. Instead, he chose to watch Kong finish his allies and then flee in their first encounter, stalk Kong and Suko after their second, and attack Kong from behind while he was distracted in their third. Though he's willing to cooperate with other Great Apes, One-Eye used another of his kind as a shield to save himself from being crushed without any hesitation, and he seemed to care more about killing Kong than the two apes who were caught in prior traps.

One-Eye's main character trait is his loyalty to the Skar King. One-Eye took it upon himself to inform his liege of Kong's presence and later of the Hollow Earth vortexes at the Iwi village, even though both brought physical harm to One-Eye. His loyalty and spite are so great that Suko's thoughts in the film's novel states that One-Eye didn't care if he died from gravity being restored so long as he killed Suko with him. This is backed up in the film, as One-Eye doesn't even attempt to convince Suko to save him from falling, instead attempting to attack the one thing keeping him from his death. However, One-Eye's loyalty has some limits; in the novel, he initially resisted the Skar King's decision to promote Suko to a red-stripe, though he backed off after the Skar King insisted. Additionally, One-Eye's loyalty is based on fear; he repeatedly looks at his actions through the lens of making sure the Skar King's anger is directed at anyone but him, even going so far as to pretend he nearly killed himself running so the Skar King would be less angry that he took so long to return to the Living Caves due to his injuries.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

As Kong chased Suko through a foggy lower layer of Hollow Earth, One-Eye dropped down from behind and immediately antagonized the larger Great Ape, aided by Stone Fist and Catcher. Kong killed the other two adult apes and flung Suko away, and the now-alone One-Eye swiftly retreated, but failed to escape before Kong threw a boulder and directly hit the older ape's head. Suko later lead Kong in the same direction One-Eye went.

Later on, after Kong and Suko arrived in the Skar King's lair, One-Eye observed them both from a ledge before turning to inform his king of their presence, only to be shoved away by a guard. One-Eye explained himself to the guards, and the Skar King weighed in from within his throne room and exited, yelling in One-Eye's face before confronting Kong. While the two Great Apes fought, One-Eye lead the cheering for the Skar King on the sidelines, and was the first to chase after Kong and Suko once they both fled.

One-Eye and his compatriots chased Kong all the way back to his territory, where Kong lead them to a narrow ravine with a tripwire in it. However, right before it was triggered, One-Eye noticed it and instructed the other apes to step over it. However, before they could harm Kong, the trap went off anyways due to Suko's intervention. As the apes panicked, One-Eye grabbed one of them, Knob, and pulled him over him just as the rocks fell. As Suko and Kong departed, One-Eye's arm pushed out from the rocks. He followed the duo all the way to the Iwi city and the Hollow Earth vortices it protected. One-Eye hurried back to the lair of the Skar King and quickly informed his lord of the discovery. Shortly after, the Skar King raised a troop of Great Apes and departed with them atop Shimo, with One-Eye leading the way.

After the Skar King and Shimo broke the protective veil surrounding the Iwi village, One-Eye was the first ape to enter. However, before the army could attack, a legion of Vertacines lead by Trapper attacked the army, but were quickly frozen by Shimo. The army marched again, but were stopped when Godzilla and Kong crashed into Hollow Earth and charged at them, quickly aided by the Iwi disturbing Hollow Earth's gravity and the arrival of Mothra. One-Eye quickly adapted and attacked Kong just as he gained the upper hand over the Skar King, but changed targets to Suko after he pelted One-Eye in the face with a boulder. The elderly ape chased the younger one and grabbed him just as gravity restored itself, and both apes landed on a giant crystal and started to slide. Suko managed to stop, but began sliding again once One-Eye grabbed his foot and attempted to pull Suko off the edge with him. Suko dislodged him with a firm kick to the face, sending One-Eye falling to his doom.

Abilities

Physical abilities

One-Eye quickly pulled Knob over him despite his comrade's resistance and greater bulk, pushing his corpse and a pile of boulders off himself afterwards. One-Eye was capable of wielding Kong's axe, though he was knocked back before he could effectively land a strike. Prior to that, he wielded a massive bone club.

Durability

One-Eye was bludgeoned by Kong with his own club, Suko, and a rock in their initial fight and was still capable of fleeing. One-Eye later survived being crushed by a rockslide triggered by Suko, albeit due to using his companion Knob as a shield. Though injured and exhausted, One-Eye followed Kong and Suko to the Iwi civilization, marched all the way back to the Skar King's kingdom, ventured all the way back with the Skar King's army, was besieged by a horde of Vertacines, and still actively partook in the final battle.

Intelligence

Like the other Great Apes, One-Eye can use bone tools. In his initial encounter with Kong, he wielded a bone club, while in his pursuit of Kong with multiple other apes he was armed with a knife.

One-Eye retreated from battle against Kong after the latter defeated all of his allies. One-Eye later recognized Kong and immediately alerted the Skar King to his presence, and was seen slamming the ground in support of the tyrant while he and Kong fought. One-Eye lead the pursuit after Kong escaped the Skar King's domain and dodged his traps, even detecting Kong's rockslide trap before the rest of the Great Apes and quickly teaching them to step over it. As Suko set off the trap from above, One-Eye grabbed his compatriot, Knob, and used him as a shield to survive the rockslide.

While most of the apes brought by the Skar King to attack the Iwi city helplessly flailed once gravity disappeared, One-Eye quickly adapted to leaping from floating rock-to-rock.

Suko's thoughts in the film's novelization repeatedly label One-Eye as dangerously smart. Afraid of returning to the Living Caves and facing the Skar King's wrath for returning defeated, One-Eye followed Suko and Kong to Malenka, repeatedly changing his plan of action along the way, before returning once he found the Hollow Earth portals and knowing the Skar King now needed him. One-Eye even tricked his king, walking as he made his return due to his injuries and only running once he got close as to appear like he ignored his own pain for his master's sake.

Weaknesses

One-Eye repeatedly lost to Kong despite having superior numbers every time. Like his fellow Great Apes, One-Eye was completely inferior to Kong in terms of strength and combat prowess. Alongside the rest of the Skar King's army, One-Eye was largely defenseless against Trapper's Vertacine swarm prior to Shimo's intervention. Suko distracted One-Eye by pelting him with massive boulders, resulting in the elder ape pursuing him. One-Eye ultimately fell to his death after Suko kicked him off a giant crystal from a tremendous height.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - The Official Movie Novelization

Suko lead Kong to a trap, where One-Eye, Stone Fist, and Catcher ambushed him. After killing Stone Fist, Suko and Catcher disappeared, leaving One-Eye alone and forcing him to retreat.

Later, Suko recounted how the Skar King sensed the lower portion of Hollow Earth opening up to the upper level and departed with his red-stripes, including One-Eye, Catcher, Stone Fist, and Suko, to investigate. They discovered and destroyed Monarch's Hollow Earth outpost and ransacked Kong's cave, before the Skar King departed back to his kingdom and left the four named Great Apes to capture or kill Kong.

While Kong roared in the Living Caves, One-Eye hurried to inform the Skar King, but was hit by a guard before he began explaining. After noticing Kong, the two guards stood aside for the Skar King. One-Eye pursued Kong after he and Suko fled, chasing the older ape all the way back to his territory, where One-Eye noticed a vine trap and warned the others. Suko triggered the trap anyways, burying all the apes beneath boulders. One-Eye survived, having pulled his companion Knob over him as a shield, and pushed his way out. Seeing Kong in the distance, One-Eye contemplated his options before deciding his safest choice was to stalk Kong from afar to see how he behaved and bring that information to the Skar King, though he quickly altered his plan to kidnapping Suko after seeing the smaller ape.

One-Eye followed the pair to Malenka, where he witnessed its veil open and reveal the Iwi city and Hollow Earth vortices within. Now knowing he had information the Skar King couldn't get otherwise, One-Eye began running home, though he quickly found that his injuries kept him from running for long. Thinking quick, he spent most of the journey walking before putting all his strength into running once he was close to keep the appearance of not letting his injuries get in the way of his loyalty. He quickly informed the Skar King and was inspired by his roar, sharing his master's rage and hunger for the surface, where there would be bounty for all Great Apes, One-Eye included. The Skar King quickly assembled his entire fighting force of male Great Apes, climbed atop Shimo, had his wives locked underground, and marched with One-Eye and the Great Ape army.

Meanwhile, Suko had noticed One-Eye survived, but hoped he was merely a trick of the light and feared the severely weakened Kong might lose in a fight. After Kong laid down, Suko set out to investigate, quickly finding One-Eye's footprints and setting out to kill him before he could inform the Skar King. Suko heard a Great Ape, which he assumed was One-Eye, but was proven wrong when he heard more and found the Skar King's army, who he watched before hurrying back to Malenka to inform Kong.

After the Skar King's army, Kong, and Godzilla were launched in the air due to the Iwi negating Hollow Earth's gravity, One-Eye attacked Kong while he fought the Skar King, but was pelted by boulders from Suko, who he pursued instead. Knowing One-Eye would kill him in a fight, Suko leapt from boulder to boulder to keep One-Eye busy, taunting him throughout the chase and getting more and more used to it. Gravity soon returned, preventing Suko from leaping to another rock and allowing One-Eye to grab him by the throat as he jumped. With One-Eye not caring if both of them died, they fell, but quickly hit a giant crystal that forced him to let go. Suko slowed to a stop while One-Eye fell over the edge, but he caught Suko's leg and began pulling him down with him. Suko gave One-Eye a defiant smile and kicked him in the face, sending him falling to his death, though Suko watched to make sure he was truly dead.

After Kong, Suko, and Shimo returned to Hollow Earth, Kong discovered the bodies of multiple Great Apes who perished in the final battle, One-Eye being among them.
