Ultraman (ウルトラマン Urutoraman), real name Lipiah (リピア Ripia), is an alien who appears in the 2022 Toho, Tsuburaya Productions, and khara film Shin Ultraman. The character first debuted in the 1966 Tsuburaya Productions TV series of the same name.
Name
As the name implies, "Ultraman" is a combination of the English words "ultra," spelled in Japanese as urutora (ウルトラ), and "man" (マン).
In the original Ultraman TV series, Ultraman stated that he had no true name, and Hayata began calling him Ultraman.
In Shin Ultraman, he is tentatively classified as Ultraman (ウルトラマン Urutoraman) by the SSSP, in a report written by member Hiroko Asami, as a shortening of Giant Humanoid Creature Ultraman (巨大人型生物ウルトラマン Kyodai Hitogata Seibutsu Urutoraman). Zōffy at one point refers to him as "Lipiah" (リピア Ripia), assumed to be his real name, before correcting himself to Ultraman. His real name is derived from a genus of flowering plants, Lippia, whose name in the flower language means bond, understanding, and honesty.

Design
The design of Ultraman in Shin Ultraman remains largely unchanged from the hero's typical depiction in media, resembling the Type-C suit used in the final third of the original series. That being said though, Ultraman supports a number of changes that make the hero closer to Tohl Narita's original vision for him.
Ultraman is a giant thin humanoid alien with metallic silver skin with an array of red patterns on his body which, unlike the rest of his skin, aren't metallic. He has large oval-shaped eyes with a faint hexagonal pattern. His eyes are slightly asymmetrical. A fin is located on his head which runs between his eyes before stopping near the back of his head. He has two small geometrical ears. Unlike most versions of Ultraman, the Shin Ultraman incarnation of the hero lacks the titular color timer and instead, when Ultraman is low on energy, his red patterns fade to green. He also lacks the back fin and eye holes, which were merely a result of a the character being portrayed by a suit. Ultraman has curved feet which resemble the ones of the Type-B suit used in the second third of the original series.
When Ultraman first appears on earth, and before bonding with and impersonating Shinji Kaminaga, he sports a much different design: being almost completely silver with a slighter darker silver in place of the typical red. His face also greatly resembles the face of the Type-A suit used in the first third of the original series, being more disheveled and organic looking. Ultraman can also be seen briefly reverting back into this form after he gives his life to revive Shinji Kaminaga. When firing his Spacium Beam 133 at Neronga, the patterns on Ultraman's chest and arms glowed white.

Abilities
Spacium 133 manipulation
In Shin Ultraman, Ultraman's body naturally contains the super heavy element Spacium 133 (スペシウム133 Supeshiumu Ichi San San) and by manipulating this element, he is able to perform countless abilities.
Flight
In Shin Ultraman, Ultraman was capable of flying extremely fast, having the ability to break the sound barrier. the alien Zarab revealed that Ultraman is able to obtain flight by distorting gravity using the Spacium 133 in his body. Additionally, Ultraman can encase himself in a red energy sphere called a Travel Sphere (トラベル スフィア Toraberu Sufia) which allows him to obtain his maximum flight speed. Upon first landing on earth, Ultraman reached speeds up to mach 10 before slowing down.

Spacium Beam 133

In Shin Ultraman, after putting his arms in a "cross" position, Ultraman can fire an extremely powerful and destructive light-wave heat ray called the Spacium Beam 133 (スペシウム光線133 Supeshiumu Kōsen Ichi San San)[8] which, when fully charged, is capable of damaging Ultraman's surroundings and ionizing the air. Ultraman is capable of controlling the intensity of this beam as shown during his fight with Zarab, where his beam launched the alien into the air rather than causing immediate destruction. Ultraman is unable to fire this attack for prolonged periods of time as shown in his fight with Mefilas, where prolonged usage caused his energy to drain rapidly, though Ultraman had already used up a lot of his energy locating Mefilas and the Beta Box. His Spacium Beam was also shown to be incapable of penetrating Zetton's barrier.
Ultra Slash
In Shin Ultraman, Ultraman can conjure a buzzsaw-like energy halo in his hands and then toss it at his opponent in a move called the Ultra Slash (ウルトラスラッシュ Urutora Surasshu), which has the capability of slicing apart its targets, as shown when Ultraman vertically bisected Zarab in half during their aerial battle. During his first encounter with Zetton, Ultraman was able to conjure a much larger Ultra Slash that, when thrown, was able to split apart into multiple smaller energy halos, though they were unable to penetrate Zetton's barrier.
Ultra V Barrier
In Shin Ultraman, Ultraman was capable of blocking Gabora's heat ray by crossing his arms in front of himself in a technique called the Ultra V Barrier (ウルトラヴィバリヤー Urutora Vi Bariyā).
Rebound Beam
In Shin Ultraman, Ultraman was capable of projecting a translucent rectangular shield, called the Rebound Beam (リバウンド光線 Ribaundo Kōsen), to protect himself from Zetton's attacks, though it was eventually broken through sustained fire from the machine.

Godzilla Battle Line

Introduced during the Visitor from the Planet of Light season in July 2022, alongside Neronga, Ultraman is a four-star Battle Piece that can be a unit or a Leader, requiring 5 energy to summon to the battlefield as the former.
- As a unit
After Ultraman emerges from the ground and lands, he'll slowly walks forwards and will starts to fly, avoiding ground enemy units. Ultraman utilizes the Ultra Slash to hit ground and/or aerial enemy units. Once he reach the Leader, he'll land and keep throwing the Ultra Slash at it in a long distance. He has a base movement speed of 10 on land, a super long reach, a wide search range, and attacks every 2.6 seconds.[9] His base aerial movement speed is unknown.
- As a Leader
Ultraman's special move, the Spacium Ray, requires 4 energy to be performed. It knocks back enemy units in a straight line, dealing 150 damage. After performing the special move, he will increase the ally units attacks power by 20% and movement speed by 30% for 10 seconds. As a Leader, he has a long reach, a wide search range, and attacks every 2.8 seconds.[9]

GigaBash

Ultraman is one of the DLC fighters included in the Ultraman DLC pack. The game also featured Gigaman, an Ultraman-inspired character, along with Godzilla characters in their own DLCs. Although this Ultraman is based on the original 1966 incarnation, his block special references how he first attacked Gabora in Shin Ultraman.
Due to "regional restrictions and licensing agreements", Ultraman and the other characters in the DLC are unavailable in China. They were originally also unavailable in Japan for the same reason, up until the DLC was finally released in the country on February 9, 2026.[10]
Moveset:
- Light Attack (tap Square): 2 quick melee strikes followed by a spinning back kick.

Ready Player One
Using the Beta Capsule that Akihude had given him, Wade Watts transformed into Ultraman. He unleashed a devastating flurry of attacks: a Specium Ray to knock Mechagodzilla over, a flying kick to its spine, and an Ultra-Slice to cut it in half. Sorrento ejected in Mechagodzilla's head, but Wade shot him down with another Specium Ray.
Trivia
- The first look at Ultraman's design was not in a trailer, but rather an image during the opening ceremony of Tsuburaya Convention 2019 on December 13.[11]
- Much like Anno and Higuchi's interpretation of Godzilla, Ultraman resembles an earlier concept from his debut outing. While Godzilla has a similar head to the maquette used for the iconic image of Godzilla biting a train, Ultraman is directly based off Tohl Narita's 1983 painting "The Incarnation of Truth, Justice, and Beauty".[12]
- Ultraman was considered for the Ready Player One film adaptation, but legal issues over the international rights of Ultraman at the time prevented that from happening; the film would have the Iron Giant from the The Iron Giant take his role instead. However, he was referenced by Dito's two-minute time limit when assuming the form of the RX-78-2 Gundam, referencing Ultraman's three-minute time limit of being on Earth. [13]
- However, Ultraman does appears in GUNSHIP's "Art3mis & Parzival" music video, released a few weeks before the film, where Wade transforms into Ultraman and battles Mechagodzilla, using the Showa Mechagodzilla design in the video. The video also features a cameo of the Iron Giant as a selectable robot.
- The GigaBash character Gigaman was inspired by Ultraman. The two would meet in the GigaBash Ultraman DLC trailer, which also featured Ultraman Tiga, Alien Baltan and Camearra.
