SpaceGodzilla (スペースゴジラ is a crystalline Supēsugojira)Godzilla clone kaiju who first appeared in the 1994 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.
SpaceGodzilla is Godzilla's penultimate foe in the Heisei series of films, as well as the only extraterrestrial creature introduced in that series. Boasting an array of psychic powers and energy attacks along with his ability to form and use crystals in various ways, SpaceGodzilla is a challenging opponent, and as a result, shapes the direction of battles which involve him. Spawned by some of Godzilla's cells which were cast into outer space, SpaceGodzilla made his way to Earth with the goal of conquering the planet and eliminating his Earthling counterpart. SpaceGodzilla triumphed in his first battle with Godzilla, even capturing the latter's adopted son in a crystal prison. The evil creature then made his way to Fukuoka and transformed it into his own crystal fortress. G-Force deployed MOGUERA to stop SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla himself soon joined the battle. While SpaceGodzilla was stronger than Godzilla or MOGUERA individually, their combined efforts resulted in the creature's defeat. Despite to date only appearing in a single film, SpaceGodzilla has been featured prominently in other Godzilla media.
Name
SpaceGodzilla's name simply comes from the English word space (スペース and supēsu)Godzilla (ゴジラ. In English, SpaceGodzilla's name is officially spelled in Gojira)camelCase, meaning it is written as a single word with the "G" capitalized, in contrast to Mechagodzilla, whose name is spelled as a single word with only the first letter capitalized. However, SpaceGodzilla's name is sometimes spelled as Space Godzilla[7]:16 or Space-Godzilla[7]:89 in official media. SpaceGodzilla's name is abbreviated as Spe-Godzi (スペゴジ once in dialogue in Supegoji)Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla as well as in some merchandise,[1] while the book Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla Super Complete Works shortens it to just SG.[7]:60 Before SpaceGodzilla is identified, G-Force refer to him generically as the "Space Monster" (宇宙怪獣. Uchū Kaijū)[8]
In the 1998 LitGodzi merchandise line, SpaceGodzilla is referred to simply as Space (スペース. Before the name "SpaceGodzilla" was chosen, early versions of the monster bore the names Supēsu)AstroGodzilla (アストロゴジラ and Asutorugojira)Crystal Godzilla (クリスタル・ゴジラ. Kurisutaru Gojira)[9]
The form SpaceGodzilla takes on while traveling through space and strafing Godzilla during their Baas Island battle is called his Flying Mode (飛行形態, Hikō Keitai)[7]:20 or alternatively Flying-type SpaceGodzilla (スペースゴジラ 飛行タイプ. Supēsugojira Hikōtaipu)
Development
Very early in the production stages of what would become Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, SpaceGodzilla's role was filled by an alien King Ghidorah named Emperor Ghidorah, which would have been a different individual from the King Ghidorah featured in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and closer in origin to the Showa incarnation.[10] However, Toho decided to create an original monster for the film instead when they became concerned that Emperor Ghidorah would be seen as too similar to Yamata no Orochi from the then-upcoming Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon. SpaceGodzilla's Gravity Tornado ability, which he uses to lift and throw Godzilla in the finished film, is a remnant of one of Emperor Ghidorah's proposed abilities, the power to levitate objects and opponents using his gravity beams.[10][11]
According to an article published in G-FAN #105, a prototype for SpaceGodzilla called AstroGodzilla was featured in an early draft of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. AstroGodzilla's powers were primarily ice-based rather than crystal-based, and he was described as being purely white in color and possessing huge wings. While two origin theories are presented for SpaceGodzilla, AstroGodzilla was said to be spawned specifically by Biollante's cells. AstroGodzilla also had the ability to telepathically control other lifeforms, and would use this power to take control of Miki Saegusa and LittleGodzilla. Eventually, Shinichiro Kobayashi, who had previously written the story for Godzilla vs. Biollante, wrote a draft called Godzilla vs. NeoGodzilla which proposed the idea of a crystalline Godzilla clone. Concept art for this interpretation of the monster included in the book Heisei Godzilla Perfection gives it the name "Crystal Godzilla." Some of these designs were radically different from the final design, featuring wings, additional limbs, and other unique features. Another early concept had the monster transform into imitations of Godzilla's previous foes, as well as a duplicate of Godzilla himself, with his true form being a thin, skull-faced quadrupedal creature. SpaceGodzilla's final design is a modified version of Super Godzilla, the transformation of Godzilla featured in the Super Nintendo game of the same name.[6] Minoru Yoshida designed the concepts for both monsters, originally creating Super Godzilla for the game, but later recycling the look and modifying it into what would eventually become the final design for SpaceGodzilla.
Concept art featuring "Crystal Godzilla"
SpaceGodzilla's suit was molded partially from fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), rendering it lighter than the Godzilla suit despite being larger overall. The suit was worn by actor Ryo Hariya, who would go on to play Destoroyah's Perfect Form in the following film. A one-meter prop of SpaceGodzilla's Flying Mode was created in addition to the suit.
Design
SpaceGodzilla looks similar to Godzilla in many ways, but his skin is navy-blue with a patch of dark reddish-purple skin on his abdominal area that appears much smoother than the rest of his skin. He is considerably bulkier than Godzilla and is also 20 meters taller than him. He has two massive white crystals that erupt from his shoulders, and his tail is much longer, ending with several crystal-like spikes. His dorsal fins on his back are made of similar crystals and are white in color. As a result of his build, SpaceGodzilla has difficulty walking and he cannot run, but he makes up for this by having the ability to fly and to levitate. His arms are also extremely thin and short in comparison to the rest of his body, owing to the fact that he rarely uses them directly in favor of his telekinetic abilities. SpaceGodzilla's head is elongated and his mouth area appears similar to Biollante's, as he has sharp teeth and tusks on the sides of his mouth, along with fleshy membranes on the inside of his mouth. He has fire-orange eyes and a crest that goes from orange through yellow.
In Godzilla in Hell, pink light flows from SpaceGodzilla eyes when he first emerges from a frozen lake in Hell to confront Godzilla, and his shoulder crystals frequently glow the same color during their fight.
Personality
SpaceGodzilla is one of the most intelligent of Godzilla's foes, exhibiting displays of planned combat strategy throughout his movie, such as harvesting power from buildings and trapping Godzilla's son LittleGodzilla. This is further evidenced by the fact that SpaceGodzilla specifically sought to dominate the Earth, and did so of his own free will, rather than causing destruction randomly or being directed under mind control. According to the Cosmos, SpaceGodzilla aimed to defeat Godzilla so that the Earth would be defenseless against him.
In the IDW Publishing comics Godzilla and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, SpaceGodzilla retained a similar motivation, allying with Gigan, Hedorah, and Monster X to invade the Earth. By Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, SpaceGodzilla developed a deep hatred for Godzilla, only teaming up with the Monster King when they faced common enemies: the Megaguirus-Trilopod and SpaceGodzilla-Trilopod hybrids. Afterwards, even after Godzilla actively saved him during their alliance, SpaceGodzilla unhesitatingly prepared to attack him while he was vulnerable, only to angrily flee from Earth when the Trilopods' hive entered the planet's atmosphere.
In Godzilla in Hell, SpaceGodzilla's motives were unspecified, though he again ferociously opposed Godzilla. After arriving in Hell, he quickly accepted a flock of demons as allies, holding open Godzilla's mouth so they could fly down his throat. SpaceGodzilla appeared shocked when Godzilla, granted a purple aura by angels, shrugged off his Corona Beam and shattered his shoulder crystals. Nonetheless, he continued attacking, leading to his demise.
Origins
In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla the human characters hypothesize that Godzilla cells somehow cast into space fell into a black hole and emerged from a white hole, evolving rapidly by assimilating crystalline organisms and being exposed to the energy from exploding stars. It is not known for certain what caused the Godzilla cells to fall into the black hole. Two explanations are provided in the film: either cells from Godzilla's previous clone, Biollante, escaped Earth's orbit when she rose into space after battling Godzilla in 1990, or Mothra unknowingly carried the cells into space on her wings in 1993 as she moved to intercept a meteor headed for Earth. In the 2019 mobile game Godzilla Defense Force, SpaceGodzilla's Codex entry names Mothra as the kaiju responsible.
SpaceGodzilla's origins are unexplained in the continuity consisting of Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, Godzilla, and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth; in Godzilla, the Shobijin describe him as "an abomination... a gruesome mockery of our own defender."
They are equivalently ambiguous in Godzilla in Hell; SpaceGodzilla is first seen battling Godzilla in Rio de Janeiro, with the ruins of MOGUERA nearby. After the two lock beam weapons, the world is destroyed in the resulting explosion, and Godzilla is sent to Heaven while SpaceGodzilla appeared in Hell, though it is unclear whether he was sent there in the same manner as Godzilla or if Godzilla encountered some demonic counterpart of the monster. Regardless, the creature was encased in a frozen lake prior to Godzilla's arrival.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
SpaceGodzilla was first seen flying through space, where he destroyed a manned NASA satellite. He battled MOGUERA while he was on his way to Earth, defeated the mecha easily, and continued on his way. He landed on Baas Island and attacked LittleGodzilla, but Godzilla arrived to save him. SpaceGodzilla quickly overpowered Godzilla using his telekinetic skills and then trapped LittleGodzilla in crystals. He flew away and flew over Japan, eventually landing and setting up his fortress in Fukuoka. MOGUERA arrived in Fukuoka to battle SpaceGodzilla again but was no match for the monster. Godzilla soon arrived as well and joined forces with MOGUERA. MOGUERA split into Land Moguera and Star Falcon. Land Moguera drilled underground and knocked out the foundations of SpaceGodzilla's power source, the Fukuoka Tower, while Godzilla toppled the tower from ground level. Godzilla then had the upper hand, and MOGUERA used its spiral grenades to destroy SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals, critically weakening him. In retaliation, SpaceGodzilla blasted off one of MOGUERA's arms and proceeded to impale the mecha on his tail and throw it into a nearby building. Akira Yuki tried to pilot the damaged mech back into battle, colliding with SpaceGodzilla and knocking the celestial clone down. However, the damage to the machine made it almost impossible to control, and MOGUERA crashed into several buildings where it became completely disabled. While the space monster struggled to get up, Godzilla blasted him with his red spiral ray multiple times, destroying MOGUERA in the process. SpaceGodzilla let out a weak roar and finally exploded into spores of light that floated back up into space.
Godzilla Island
This article or section needs to be cleaned up to meet the standards of Wikizilla. |
In Godzilla Island episodes 1-5, Xilien Zagreth attacked Godzilla Island. When Torema attacked her ship, she released SpaceGodzilla to attack. Godzilla roars at his clone. SpaceGodzilla reaches the Command Center and attacks, shooting the Command Center with his ray. Godzilla then arrives and grapples with SpaceGodzilla, neither being able to overpower the other. Torema then tells Godzilla to destroy SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals. Godzilla obeys and fires his atomic ray, blowing up the crystals. Godzilla and Torema's ship fire their rays, and the combined efforts destroy SpaceGodzilla.
After attempting to and failing to possess Godzilla as a ghost, SpaceGodzilla returned to Godzilla Island in a new more powerful physical form called Super Special SpaceGodzilla High Grade Type 2. However, he was defeated in this form again by Godzilla after the Monster King destroyed his left shoulder crystal, and forced to retreat back to outer space.

Abilities
SpaceGodzilla is considered to be one of Godzilla's most powerful foes. In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla was quickly defeated by SpaceGodzilla in their first encounter and required help from MOGUERA to finally overcome him.
Physical strength
While much of SpaceGodzilla's strength is limited due to his size and build, he was able to lift and throw MOGUERA several hundred meters after impaling it with his tail in a technique called the Tail Smasher (テールスマッシャー Tēru Sumasshā)[7][13] or simply Tail smash.[14] He was also able to hold his own against Godzilla for a time while battling him up close.
In Godzilla in Hell, SpaceGodzilla proved strong enough to restrain Godzilla with his bare hands and pry his jaws open to allow his demon allies to enter his throat.
Durability
SpaceGodzilla endured a tremendous amount of punishment, mostly in the form of beams, from Godzilla and MOGUERA during their confrontation in Fukuoka. The G-cells in his body presumably grant him the same form of accelerated healing as Godzilla. However, he was unable to regenerate his destroyed shoulder crystals, and while a neck wound dealt by MOGUERA's drill vanished shortly after he received it, the lack of blood in subsequent shots suggests its disappearance was a continuity error. In the main continuity of IDW Publishing's Godzilla comics, SpaceGodzilla regenerated and survived after being frozen by Mechagodzilla's Absolute Zero Cannon and subsequently blasted by Godzilla's atomic breath, which initially seemed to kill him.
Photon Reactive Shield
SpaceGodzilla can generate a crystal-like shield at will, called the Photon Reactive Shield (フォトン・リアクティブ・シールド, Foton Riakutibu Shīrudo)[7][13] to dissipate or even reflect energy beams, although he only used this ability to deflect Godzilla's atomic breath. SpaceGodzilla used this shield both to protect himself and defend the Fukuoka Tower when Godzilla tried to attack it.
Corona Beam
SpaceGodzilla is able to fire an energy beam from his mouth and shoulder crystals called the Corona Beam (コロナビーム. Korona Bīmu)[7][13] The beam is yellowish-orange in color and lightning-like in appearance with a bluish-white curved tip on the front end shaped like a dagger or scorpion's stinger to stab and dig into armored targets before exploding. He appears able to control the direction and movements of these energy beams, possibly through his telekinesis, allowing them to hit his target in various ways, even bypassing potential defenses. The beam is able to visibly injure Godzilla, even knocking him to the ground in one instance, and later is used to sever one of MOGUERA's arms.
In Godzilla Island, SpaceGodzilla's beam attack appears more like a red-colored version of Godzilla's atomic breath. After he is killed and resurrected, it takes on a deeper red coloration.
In Godzilla in Hell, the Corona Beam set Godzilla aflame. When it locked with his atomic breath, the resulting explosion killed both monsters and destroyed Earth. In their rematch in Hell, SpaceGodzilla's Corona Beam would be the cause of his own defeat when Godzilla's aura reflected it back at him, blasting him into pieces.
Intelligence
In addition to being physically powerful, SpaceGodzilla also demonstrates a high degree of intelligence and strategy. Upon arriving on Earth, SpaceGodzilla immediately went after Godzilla, as he saw him as the biggest threat within his path to ensure his dominance on the planet. SpaceGodzilla first arrived on Baas Island and attacked LittleGodzilla so as to draw out Godzilla himself.
SpaceGodzilla began setting up crystal-like structures around Fukuoka in order to provide and enhance his own power as well as fend off Godzilla. Aware that he was at a disadvantage in close combat, SpaceGodzilla used his telekinesis and corona beams to keep both Godzilla and MOGUERA at a distance and shifted his attention to MOGUERA when he realized it was a bigger threat than Godzilla. SpaceGodzilla also placed an energy shield around the Fukuoka Tower, which he was using as an energy source after Godzilla had begun trying to destroy it.
In both the manga adaptation of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and in the video game Godzilla: Save the Earth, SpaceGodzilla is able to use his smaller crystals as an improvised melee bat-like weapon. In the manga specifically, he uses a crystal to parry and deflect Godzilla's atomic breath.
In Godzilla in Hell, SpaceGodzilla coordinated with a horde of demons in an attempt to bring Godzilla to their side, forcibly keeping Godzilla's mouth open.
Flight
In his flying form, SpaceGodzilla is capable of flying at Mach 3 in Earth's atmosphere, though he can reach close to the speed of light in outer space.[7][6] He is still able to use his other abilities, such as his Corona Beam, while in this form.
Gravity Tornado
SpaceGodzilla possesses a form of telekinesis, called Gravity Tornado[5] or Gravi-Tornado[14] (グラビ・トルネード, Gurabi Torunēdo)[7][13] allowing him to float or transport other kaiju through the air. Though he cannot move his targets with great speed, Godzilla was completely unable to break free of his psychic grip. He also lifted a number of crystal spires into the air and hurled them at Godzilla.
Geokinesis
SpaceGodzilla can control the ground around him by creating massive towering crystals. He is able to raise them up from the ground to use a means of defending himself or attacking his foes. He also appears able to form these crystals out of thin air as well, as he encases himself in a mass of crystals while in his flying form. SpaceGodzilla is also able to combine this power with his energy manipulation in order to use the crystals to attack his foes with energy beams and small crystal shards, as well as provide him with a source of energy and an increase in attack power. In the Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla manga adaptation, SpaceGodzilla spreads these crystals by exhaling a stream of crystalline spores.
Energy manipulation
SpaceGodzilla is able to manipulate energy at will. He can control the direction and flight path of his corona beams to allow for multi-directional attacks. He is able to conduct energy through touch, an ability referred to as Space Claw (スペース・クロー, Supēsu Kurō)[7] allowing him to stand a better chance when facing a foe in close combat. He can absorb energy from nearby sources as well and combine this power with his geokinesis to maximize his energy as well as create giant crystal structures which he can throw at his foes. He also produces an aura that can cause electrical disturbances, as demonstrated against MOGUERA in their first fight. Godzilla Movie Studio Tour notes that SpaceGodzilla absorbs cosmic energy via his shoulder crystals and that, if they are damaged, it will cause SpaceGodzilla to lose his acquired energy.
In Godzilla Island, SpaceGodzilla's ghost form has the ability to absorb spiritual energy from other beings as well.
SpaceGodzilla conducts energy through his tail into MOGUERA to damage it further
SpaceGodzilla absorbs energy from the Fukuoka Tower
Homing Ghost
With an ability known as Homing Ghost (ホーミングゴースト, Hōmingu Gōsuto)[7][13] SpaceGodzilla can raise crystals into the air and propel them at an opponent or have them fall to the ground, like rain. Their quantity makes them hard to dodge, though they travel at a slow pace. In the PlayStation 3 and 4 Godzilla game, SpaceGodzilla can create Homing Ghosts out of thin air, though only while the Crystal Field is present.
Photon Hurricane
While in his flying form, SpaceGodzilla can emit a ring-shaped electromagnetic wave called a Photon Hurricane (フォトンハリケーン, Foton Harikēn)[7][13] which disrupts electrical instruments. He used this attack on MOGUERA, along with his corona beam, to make it incapable of fighting him while he was flying toward Earth.
Illumination
In the manga adaptation for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, SpaceGodzilla flooded the windows of the space station Toora with light before destroying it.
Aura
In Godzilla: Unleashed, SpaceGodzilla can release an aura while momentarily levitating off the ground. The description of the ability claims this aura is an EMP blast, which causes heat-seeking weapons or other military attacks to not work for the duration of the ability, although this does not actually occur in the game.
Telekinetic shove
In Godzilla: Save the Earth, SpaceGodzilla can use his telekinesis to push out in all directions while hovering, creating a large shockwave that sends most kaiju flying.
Possession
In Godzilla Island, the deceased SpaceGodzilla's spirit was summoned by Dogora and possessed Godzilla's body. This changed the color of the monster's atomic breath to red and allowed him to drain the energy of other kaiju.
Weaknesses
SpaceGodzilla is heavily disadvantaged in melee combat due to his heavy build and comparatively short arms. When engaging MOGUERA at close range, SpaceGodzilla's skin was pierced by the mech's Crusher Drill. MOGUERA's spiral grenade missiles also destroyed SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals, drastically weakening his power. Destroying his planted crystals will also weaken the monster by cutting off his energy supply. SpaceGodzilla was eventually destroyed by multiple hits from Godzilla's red spiral heat beam.
In IDW Publishing's Godzilla, Godzilla's regular atomic breath destroyed SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals and even his dorsal plates after he was blasted with Mechagodzilla's Absolute Zero Cannon. By Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, set years later, the monster had regrown his crystals. Gigan drew blood from him with his chest saw and chopped the tip off one of his shoulder crystals with a scythe. Shortly thereafter, two Alpha Trilopods punctured his shoulder crystals to absorb his energy.
In Godzilla in Hell, SpaceGodzilla was quickly overpowered by Godzilla, who eventually pinned him down with his foot and started a beam-lock that killed both monsters. In their second confrontation in Hell, SpaceGodzilla was swiftly killed by Godzilla again, who had consumed a swarm of his demon allies as well as angels from heaven. With this newly acquired power, Godzilla produced an aura that rendered SpaceGodzilla incapable of inflicting any damage before shattering his shoulder crystals. Enraged, SpaceGodzilla destroyed himself as he fired his Corona Beam at Godzilla again, exploding to pieces of flesh when the Monster King's aura reflected the attack directly back at him.

SpaceGodzilla is a malevolent fusion of Godzilla's DNA and an unknown collection of extra-terrestrial minerals and energies. SpaceGodzilla has an unknown potential for psychic abilities, including telekinesis, telepathy, levitation, mind control, and the manipulation of many basic elements. SpaceGodzilla can temper crystal towers from the earth around him, which he uses to magnify and focus his psychic energies. SpaceGodzilla's greatest weapon is the human-level intelligence that he wields, despite his gargantuan frame. This makes him a tremendous potential threat to all humanity and all of the earth. SpaceGodzilla has attacked Earth only twice before - once as a free agent and once as an ally of the Vortaak. But his thirst for power knows no allegiance, and needs none.[17]

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters
As humanity took the first steps towards rebuilding civilization in the wake of a monster apocalypse, SpaceGodzilla arrived on the Moon, watching the Earth with sinister intent.
Godzilla
After being struck by lightning generated from Mothra's wings, Claire Plangman experienced a vision of space monsters who would soon invade the planet, SpaceGodzilla being among them. Soon enough, the vision came to pass as SpaceGodzilla, Gigan, Hedorah, and Monster X arrived on Earth. Landing in London, SpaceGodzilla made short work of buildings such as the Shard and Big Ben, and soon began erecting a fortress of giant crystals while fighting off military forces. After being freed from Monster Island, Battra and Titanosaurus arrived in London to fight SpaceGodzilla. Battra engaged him with his Prism Beams until SpaceGodzilla knocked him out with his own Corona Beam, though Titanosaurus was quick to defend his ally by knocking SpaceGodzilla back with his fan tail. Following a brief skirmish, SpaceGodzilla knocked Battra into Titanosaurus while firing his beams, electrocuting the duo. With the Earth defenders dispatched, SpaceGodzilla left London and journeyed to New York. Upon arrival, SpaceGodzilla joined Monster X in battle against Godzilla by engaging in a three-way beam lock, resulting in a massive explosion that sent all three monsters flying back. Once recovered, Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla continued their duel in the Hudson River, with SpaceGodzilla levitating into the air and using his tail to swat Godzilla into the downed Mechagodzilla, which had been dispatched by Monster X earlier. Despite suffering great damage, Harrison was able to fire Mechagodzilla’s Absolute Zero Cannon at SpaceGodzilla, rending the space invader helpless as Godzilla used his atomic breath to obliterate the crystals on SpaceGodzilla’s back. Too injured to fight back, SpaceGodzilla was then defeated.
SpaceGodzilla fights Godzilla in Godzilla
Godzilla: The Half-Century War
In 1987, SpaceGodzilla was summoned to Bombay, India, by Dr. Deverich's modified Psionic Transmitter. A shower of giant crystals fell to Earth as SpaceGodzilla arrived within a great mass of crystals, having interrupted an ongoing battle between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. Before Mechagodzilla could react, SpaceGodzilla struck the mech with his Corona Beam, knocking Mechagodzilla back into buildings and impaling him with crystal projectiles. Godzilla attempted to engage him, but SpaceGodzilla used his Photon Reactive Shield to block Godzilla's atomic ray and proceeded to levitate Godzilla into the air before slamming him back to the ground. As SpaceGodzilla continued his relentless assault on Godzilla with his beam and crystal projectiles, Ota Murakami arrived at the downed Mechagodzilla and was able to get the mech back online, firing all of its remaining weapons at SpaceGodzilla's mass of crystals behind him. Once the crystals - the source of SpaceGodzilla's power - were destroyed, SpaceGodzilla was unable to defend himself from Godzilla, who finished him off with his atomic breath.
Godzilla: Rulers of Earth
During Dr. Kenji Ando's Megazoology Conference in Honolulu some time after the space invasion, Dr. Ando shared a photograph of SpaceGodzilla, revealing that the monster had survived its battle with Godzilla and was last seen leaving Earth's atmosphere, his crystals still damaged from the battle. Several years later, while the Cryog were orbiting the Moon, they detected SpaceGodzilla on a collision course with their ship, launching crystal projectiles at it. The Cryogs dispatched their two remaining Mechagodzilla units to fight him off, but the cold vacuum of space froze them stiff, allowing SpaceGodzilla to destroy both Mechagodzillas with ease using his tail and Corona Beam. Continuing his assault on the spacecraft, SpaceGodzilla took out the ships's defenses, at which point the Cryog sent Gigan into battle. Though SpaceGodzilla used his Photon Reactive Shield to block Gigan's initial attack, Gigan used his grappling hooks to grab SpaceGodzilla's tail in efforts to get him away from the Cryog ship. However, SpaceGodzilla was able to use his telekinetic powers to encase Gigan within a prison of crystals, temporarily incapacitating the cyborg so he could continue his assault on the Cryog vessel. Upon breaking free, Gigan used his buzzsaw to slash SpaceGodzilla's chest and damage one of his shoulder crystals, though SpaceGodzilla retaliated with his Corona Beam, which burned the sails on Gigan's back. After taking on his flying form, SpaceGodzilla encased himself with crystals, which trapped one of Gigan's arms and forced the cyborg to sever it in order to escape. With that, SpaceGodzilla traveled to Earth.
Shortly before his arrival, however, SpaceGodzilla was ambushed by a swarm of Trilopods, who sent him crashing down to the surface into Los Angeles. As one of the Trilopods absorbed some of SpaceGodzilla's characteristics, the Megaguirus-Trilopod hybrid brought Godzilla to the same location. Before either monster could attack, the SpaceGodzilla-Trilopod hybrid used its newfound powers to telekinetically levitate Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla around, smashing them into each other and creating crystals of its own. Just as the Trilopod launched crystals as SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla came to his aid and stopped the attack with his atomic breath, allowing SpaceGodzilla to attack his imposter. Despite briefly gaining the upper hand, the Megaguirus-Trilopod incapacitated SpaceGodzilla with a fireball, allowing the SpaceGodzilla-Trilopod to trap both Godzillas within a prison of crystals. Realizing they needed to work together in order to survive, SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla blasted their way free of the prison with their respective beam attacks, at which point SpaceGodzilla wasted no time in unleashing his fury upon his doppelganger. Before the SpaceGodzilla-Trilopod could retaliate, Godzilla killed it with his atomic breath, saving SpaceGodzilla but causing him to collapse in exhaustion. With the threat gone, SpaceGodzilla approached Godzilla's body and prepared to attack him, but was distracted by the arrival of the Trilopod hive entering the atmosphere. Ultimately, SpaceGodzilla chose to stand down, roaring hatefully in Godzilla's face before departing in his flying mode, escaping the Earth before more Trilopods could arrive.
Godzilla in Hell
After destroying the Moon en-route to Earth, SpaceGodzilla landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he engaged Godzilla in a great battle that reduced the city to rubble and destroyed various military vehicles and mechs. As SpaceGodzilla used his telekinesis to begin breaking the Earth around them, he unleashed a relentless stream of his Corona Beam on Godzilla, though Godzilla fought back with his own beam and temporarily incapacitated SpaceGodzilla. However, as Godzilla continued to attack, SpaceGodzilla regained consciousness and fired back, resulting in a beam-lock. With neither kaiju backing down, the energy from their beam-lock resulted in a massive explosion that destroyed the entire planet, killing them both and sending Godzilla to Purgatory. After Godzilla rejected the call of God's angels to join their cause of peace, he was cast into Hell and encountered a now-demonic SpaceGodzilla who had joined forces with demons, who wished to consume Godzilla's heart. After tackling Godzilla and holding him down, SpaceGodzilla allowed the demons to fly down Godzilla's throat until the angels arrived to battle the demons. With the angels' help, Godzilla gained a protective force field that shielded him from SpaceGodzilla's attacks. Once Godzilla destroyed his shoulder crystals, SpaceGodzilla fired his Corona Beam at Godzilla in one final attempt to stop him - only for the beam to ricochet off Godzilla's protected body back at SpaceGodzilla, which destroyed his body for good.
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
After Rita Repulsa voiced her intent to find a spell that would allow her to subjugate the minds of Earth’s monsters, SpaceGodzilla was among the kaiju that the evil sorceress imagined falling under her command and aiding her own monsters in laying waste to her home reality.
Godzilla Rivals: Vs. SpaceGodzilla
In an asteroid orbiting around the planet Pellucidia, SpaceGodzilla lied dormant and dreamt of a previous encounter with Godzilla on Earth. With quartz having become integral to Pellucidia's economy and the crux of a planet-wide religion from those who came to worship the crystals, the Ophiogans mined the asteroid for quartz, unaware of SpaceGodzilla's presence until a laser from one of their mining vehicles struck him in the head. SpaceGodzilla promptly burst out of the asteroid and fell to the surface of the planet while most the residents of the planet, the Ophiogans and the Laitians, could only watch in horror. However, some of the more devoutly religious Ophiogans believed that SpaceGodzilla was in fact a being known to their religion as "the Crystal King" and sought to disrupt any and all military action employed against him. Sensing the presence of a mysterious crystalline object brimming with energy, SpaceGodzilla journeyed towards the cities of Pellucidia as the Pellucidian military mounted their defenses in preparation for an all-out assault. After SpaceGodzilla crushed a group of Ophiogan cultists who ventured to greet their "savior", the military engaged him. Though their powerful weapons managed to crack SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals, SpaceGodzilla utilized his telekinetic abilities to decimate the entire army, prompting the Ophiogan commander to call for the release of Singura.
A massive vessel appeared above SpaceGodzilla, who promptly destroyed it with his Corona Beams - but not before the vessel released Singura. Singura leapt at SpaceGodzilla in an attempt to bite him, and while SpaceGodzilla dodged the attack, Singura was able to grab SpaceGodzilla's tail and toss him aside. Spacegodzilla countered with his beams, and the battle continued until a member of the Ophiogan cult who infiltrated the military executed the military officials controlling Singura, inadvertently causing the monster to begin generating a black hole using crystals in its body. After his Corona Beams proved ineffective, SpaceGodzilla used his telekinesis to shatter the crystals in Singura, causing the black hole to dissipate after Signura was sucked into it. Victorious, SpaceGodzilla was now able to reach the cities of Pellucidia with little remaining resistance. As their cities fell, the Ophiogans and Laitians were forced to evacuate, though a group of resistance fighters including members of both races plotted to destroy the crystalline object SpaceGodzilla sought. Unfortunately for them, the Ophiogan Grand Archpriest, who still believed SpaceGodzilla was their savior and the Crystal King, thwarted their efforts and allowed SpaceGodzilla to reach the church housing the object. After tearing the roof off of the church and crushing the Grand Archpriest, SpaceGodzilla grabbed the crystalline object, which then hatched into a baby monster. Unfazed, SpaceGodzilla mercilessly crushed the hapless baby, allowing him to absorb its energy. As the new power coursed through his body, SpaceGodzilla now had the strength to spawn countless crystals across the surface of the planet, ravaging entire cities and triggering volcanic eruptions and storms that wiped out the majority of the Ophiogans and Laitians. Now revitalized, SpaceGodzilla assumed his flying form and departed the planet that he had thrown into utter chaos. As SpaceGodzilla flew past what few escape vessels were able to depart the planet in time, visions of Godzilla filled his head, vying for a rematch.
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II
In a bid to stop the Power Rangers once and for all, Rita Repulsa and Astronema located some of Godzilla's most powerful foes throughout the multiverse, including SpaceGodzilla, whose power was siphoned and transferred into Psycho Blue – a member of the evil Psycho Rangers – to become Psycho Ranger SpaceGodzilla of the Kaiju Psycho Rangers.
Eventually, the Power Rangers used their own kaiju power to stop the Kaiju Psycho Rangers once and for all, forcibly extracting SpaceGodzilla's energy out of Psycho Blue.

Roar
Like most other Heisei monsters, SpaceGodzilla's roar is made of recycled sounds, but unlike most other Heisei monsters, instead of the usual Rodan roars heard from Godzillasaurus, King Ghidorah, Mecha-King Ghidorah and Battra, Toho took Gigan's roar and pitched it down to make SpaceGodzilla's roar. Toy commercials for Trendmasters' Godzilla Wars toyline used red-tailed hawk sounds for SpaceGodzilla. In Godzilla Generations: Maximum Impact, SpaceGodzilla's roar is an altered Heisei Godzilla roar. He is given a new set of roars in addition to his original roar in the Godzilla video games developed by Pipeworks.
SpaceGodzilla's roar would later be reused by The Gransazers mech Daisazer.

Trivia
- SpaceGodzilla's flying form weighs a massive 720,000 metric tons,[note 1] making SpaceGodzilla the heaviest known monster in the entire Godzilla franchise.
- SpaceGodzilla is the only monster in the Godzilla series to have two official origin theories put forth in the same film. Other monsters have had multiple origins throughout their film appearances, but are restricted only to a single origin in each continuity.
- SpaceGodzilla has many characteristics similar to Biollante, including a screeching roar, a pair of tusks on each side of his mouth, a flap of skin in the corners of his mouth, and an ability to cause electrical disturbances. At the end of the film, SpaceGodzilla's glowing "essence" escaped from his body and flew into space, much like Biollante did herself five years earlier. These uncanny similarities make Biollante a more likely candidate than Mothra for creating SpaceGodzilla.
- A Space Godzilla was the title of an illustrated short story based on an unmade Godzilla film considered after Terror of Mechagodzilla. It revolved around several alien "Space Godzillas," which hailed from Godzilla Planet. Aside from the name, this story and SpaceGodzilla are completely unconnected.
- Early versions of the script for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla called for SpaceGodzilla to face Godzilla and a second Mechagodzilla, a plan scrapped when it was realized that against the combined might of Godzilla and the machine which nearly killed him in the previous year would make the battle too one-sided. Instead, the less-powerful Moguera was revived and updated for this purpose, although Godzilla: The Half-Century War seems to pay homage to this idea in issue #4.
- SpaceGodzilla was part of the mutants faction in Godzilla: Unleashed. At first glance, it might have made more sense for SpaceGodzilla to have been in the Aliens faction, seeing as his origins are from space. However, all of the alien monsters in the game were controlled by the Vortaak, and SpaceGodzilla was acting on his own free will during the events of the game.
- SpaceGodzilla's electromagnetic aura seems to act like an electromagnetic pinch, jamming electronics by getting their signals crossed or entangled with other electronics. After his defeat, news satellites were able to resume receiving live feeds from cameras on location in the area.
- SpaceGodzilla battled Godzilla in a Hero Fest '96 stage show which also included appearances by characters from the Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai franchises.[19]
- Yosuke Nakano, who worked as the assistant special effects director under Koichi Kawakita for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, was an outspoken fan of SpaceGodzilla and proposed and created storyboards for a potential direct sequel to the film with SpaceGodzilla returning as the villain. While Toho did not further develop Nakano's Terror of SpaceGodzilla proposal, Nakano expressed his hope for the character to appear in a future film.
- In reference to SpaceGodzilla's corona beam attack, Wizards of the Coast printed a card called "Spacegodzilla, Death Corona" for its Magic: The Gathering set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths just prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 2, 2020, the day they officially announced the set, Wizards also released a statement that future printings of the card would be renamed "Spacegodzilla, Void Invader."[20]
- Four months before the release of GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters (2017), Japanese news site CINEMATODAY reported that SpaceGodzilla, along with Hedorah, Moguera, and Kamacuras, would appear in the film.[21] The film ultimately did feature the appearance of Kamacuras and a news chyron mentioning Hedorah, while both they and Moguera appeared in the film's tie-in novel GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse; however, SpaceGodzilla has never been referenced in the continuity in any capacity.
