— Ares ("Ancient Greece") |
Ares is the god of war and courage in Ancient Greek religion and mythology. He appears in IDW Publishing's 2016 Godzilla comic Godzilla: Rage Across Time #2. When his worshippers mysteriously renounced their faith and massively fell victim to a mysterious force, Ares and the other gods indulged in an argument over their course of action. Their inability to swallow their egos ultimately led to their deaths at the hands of Godzilla. Ares himself was the first Olympian after Poseidon to be killed by Godzilla. He leapt down towards the monster from Mount Olympus, only to be vaporized by Godzilla’s atomic breath.
He also appears in Marvel Comic's Mighty Avengers #1 where it also featured a cameo from Godzilla.
Design
In Mighty Avengers, Ares possesses a black Roman helmet with bronze accents. He wears a black chest plate with a skull and crossed swords as well as joint pads with spikes on his elbows and knees. He possesses short dark brown hair along with a salt-and-pepper mouth. His attire generally consists of black and brown coverings such as armbands, chest plating, and gauzes on his legs.
In Godzilla: Rage Across Time, Ares is a muscular humanoid with brown hair in a Viking-like mohawk as well as facial hair. He wears golden armor plating on his torso and the front of his lower legs from the knees to his feet. His arms are exposed and equipped with golden wristbands and he possesses a brown leather battle skirt covering the majority of his thighs. He bears a red full-length cape, brown gauze on his lower legs and feet with his toes exposed, and brown sandals. His arms are very veiny and he possesses scar-like markings throughout his skin. On his scalp, Ares possesses a marking in the shape of a bolt of lightning.
Personality
As the god of war, Ares is naturally aggressive and battle-hardened, displaying an eagerness towards inflicting violence or starting conflicts that tend to be unnecessary.
In Mighty Avengers his personality is not much shown aside from helping the Avengers deal with Moleman's monster army.
In Godzilla: Rage Across Time, like fellow Olympian Zeus, Ares possessed a massive ego and a high degree of unmeditated arrogance, though he has also shown to be rational at times, at least more so than Zeus. Ultimately, his thirst for battle led to his demise when he jumped down towards Godzilla in a futile attack.

Godzilla: Rage Across Time
"Ancient Greece"
After a war broke out unbeknownst to Ares and the other Olympians, an unknown entity destroyed both armies, causing Hermes, the messenger god to inform them all of the crisis and to plan a course of action. Zeus however, did not care that the mortals were gone, and in fact resented them for their turning away from the gods and stopping their prayers and sacrifices. Along with his sister Aphrodite, Ares proposed to their father two means of regaining their renounced worshippers, Ares' being rather violent and aggressive. Ares' proposal of waging war on their mortal worshipers was turned down on account of it almost getting the Gods killed in a previous conflict. Before long, Godzilla appeared at the foot of Mt. Olympus with a tidal wave conjured by the now deceased Poseidon. Ares took his battle and jumped down at Godzilla, only to be killed by the monster's atomic breath.
Abilties
Physical Capabilities
As an Olympian, Ares possesses incredible physical prowess.
In Mighty Avengers he was capable of fighting off Moleman's monster army even when swarmed by multiple monsters.
In Godzilla: Rage Across Time, he was agile enough to leap down Mount Olympus at Godzilla with finesse.
Intelligence
As the god of war, it is natural that Ares' expertise and talents fall on warfare and violence, including battle strategy and combat tactics.
In Mighty Avengers, he is shown working alongside the Avengers to deal with Moleman's monster army.
In Godzilla: Rage Across Time however, this was never demonstrated in the comic as he was swiftly killed by Godzilla before having the opportunity to demonstrate it.
Weapons
As the god of war, Ares possesses various melee weapons.
In Mighty Avengers, he uses two swords in the battle against Moleman's monster army along with a single-bladed axe at some points during such. Though his weapons are capable of cutting through the monsters, he is not shown using them against Godzilla. Ares also possesses an additional axe that is akin in design to a chopping scythe.
In Godzilla: Rage Across Time, Ares wields a large golden double-bladed axe, which he attempted to attack Godzilla with during his final moments.
Weaknesses
In spite of being a god, Ares was neither invincible nor limitless.
In Mighty Avengers, he was pinned down by one of Moleman's monsters and required saving from Wasp.
In Godzilla: Rage Across Time, like his fellow Olympians, Ares' power was limited by the amount of faith possessed by the people who worshipped him. In addition, Ares proved to be very reckless and arrogant. He was ultimately killed with a singular blast of Godzilla's atomic breath.
