Bob Jones:Maybe this all won't be so bad after... all-- My god. What is that thing?
Dr. Kyoto:That is Mechagodzilla, agent Jones... and don't you worry about things getting too bad... because they just got a hell of a lot worse.

Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ,   Mekagojira) is

Name

Main article: Mechagodzilla#Name.

Mechagodzilla's name is a combination of "mecha," which is derived from "mechanical," and "Godzilla" (ゴジラ,   Gojira).

Design

This Mechagodzilla reuses the design of the Showa Mechagodzilla, albeit with red eyes and highlights in Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II - Sons of Giants. While its red highlights are absent in Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens, its eye color is still generally red but also occasionally appears orange. Another notable difference between this Mechagodzilla and the Showa version is that this Mechagodzilla can fold its fingers much like that of a human hand.

Mechagodzilla is also erroneously drawn without its tail in a panel in Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens issue #4.

Origins

Mechagodzilla is a robot monster operated and presumably built by the Xiliens since at least 1804, having been deployed alongside Gigan and SpaceGodzilla when a fleet of Xilien UFOs touched down in Iowa. While not depicted in the flashback showing the war with the Simians, the Simian Dr. Kyoto recognizes the machine by name upon seeing it confront Jet Jaguar in 1954 New York City and she seems to demonstrate knowledge of the machine when acknowledging that Jet Jaguar stands little chance against it, implying Mechagodzilla had previously been used against the Simians before.

While Mechagodzilla is seemingly destroyed at the hands of the rebuilt Jet Jaguar in Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens issue #4, it reappears intact alongside the other Xilien pawns on Monster Island in issue #5. Whether this is intended to imply multiple Mechagodzilla units, the Xiliens quickly recovering and repairing Mechagodzilla, or a simple continuity error is unknown.

Abilities

Mouth laser

Mechagodzilla possesses a powerful orange-yellow mouth laser which it used to great effect against Hedorah when the smog monster attempted to rescue Godzilla, defeating the monster with a single blast. It is also seemingly used earlier against Jet Jaguar to announce its presence but had little apparent effect on the robot.

Missiles

Mechagodzilla fired missiles from an unclear part of its body towards Jet Jaguar and Godzilla but it was not shown if they reached their targets. Mechagodzilla also earlier attempted to land a finishing blow on Jet Jaguar using finger missiles but was attacked by Godzilla before they could be fired.

Shield

Mechagodzilla deployed a shield similar to the Showa incarnation's Neo Defense Barrier to protect itself from Godzilla and Jet Jaguar but the combined forces of Godzilla's atomic breath and Jet Jaguar's handclap wore the shield down and broke it.

Physical abilities

Mechagodzilla shows some degree of proficiency in physical combat, grabbing Jet Jaguar and throwing it into a building. It later attempted a final attack on Godzilla and Jet Jaguar by charging towards them with its hands curled into fists but was knocked to the ground before it could achieve this.

Durability

Mechagodzilla initially withstood Jet Jaguar's various laser attacks but struggled when Godzilla joined the fray and combined his own attacks with Jet Jaguar's against Mechagodzilla.

Weaknesses

Though potentially more powerful than either of them individually, Mechagodzilla was quickly overwhelmed by the teamwork of Godzilla and Jet Jaguar and was defeated upon its shield being destroyed and their combined physical attacks knocking it to the ground. Mechagodzilla also later suffered severe damage when Jet Jaguar sped towards Earth from the Moon and crashlanded in a massive explosion at Mechagodzilla's location.

Trivia

  • This Mechagodzilla is the only version of the character to oppose the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, with all other incarnations either being built by them or having no connection to them.
  • This Mechagodzilla is only member of the "Big Five" to both never appear in any capacity in Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons and act solely as a villain over the course of the continuity.
