Doug
|
Doug is a Titan[10] who first appeared briefly in the 2021 Monsterverse film Godzilla vs. Kong and reappeared in its 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. He is a member of an unnamed reptilian species that lives in Hollow Earth.
Name
The Godzilla vs. Kong audio description calls Doug a Foetodon, a species from the 2005 King Kong remake by Universal Pictures, which has no affiliation with the Monsterverse.[3][4] However, the film's novelization simply identifies him and his kind as lizard-like monsters, while Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall - The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale uses Scaly Quadrupeds.
"Doug" started as a popular nickname among fans, coined by the podcast It Came From A Monster Movie!,[11] but was then embraced by director Adam Wingard,[12] the Legendary Pictures Twitter and Instagram accounts,[13] an official T-shirt,[7] and the metaverse platform Virtua.[14] He was also frequently called Titanus Doug (or Titanous Doug on Virtua), including on the packaging for Playmates' Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire toys. Both "Doug" and "Titanus Doug" were finally established in-universe in Monsterverse Declassified.[8]
Design
Doug's species is rotund in physique with large, green eyes and short legs. Their osteoderms are also more jagged in shape, and somewhat resemble those found on the Hellhawks, another species inhabiting the Hollow Earth. The Virtua NFT of the creature shows that it has two rows of spikes running down its tail, ending in a heavily spiked tip resembling the thagomizer of a Stegosaurus.[15] They have thick, crocodile-like skin, grey-brown in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire but green in Monsterverse Declassified, which acts as armor against the many other threats in the Hollow Earth.[15]
Origins
Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall - The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale notes that director Adam Wingard asked that Doug's species resemble Godzilla, although the book does not confirm an evolutionary link.[16]
Personality
Doug is at least partially carnivorous, preying on Rockclaws and feasting on the carcass of a Wart Dog. He is a fearless scavenger, stealing Kong's food when the ape's back was turned and refusing to back down when the larger Titan noticed and grabbed for it.

Monsterverse
Godzilla vs. Kong
As Rockclaws scattered in Kong's wake during his charge through the Hollow Earth, Doug seized the opportunity, snatching up one of the creatures in his jaws. Eight more members of his species steered clear of Kong as he continued running.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
After Kong dragged two Wart Dog carcasses to his cave in the Hollow Earth and began to eat them, he became distracted by a painful infected tooth. Doug used the opening to drag one of the carcasses away in his jaws. Kong noticed the theft and tried to pull his meal back to him, but the ape Titan's attention was diverted by what he thought was the roar of another member of his species. Doug escaped with his prize while he investigated.
Abilities
Physical abilities
Doug easily caught a Rockclaw in his jaws and crushed it. More impressively, he briefly matched the larger Kong in strength as they struggled over a Wart Dog carcass, although Kong became distracted before one could overpower the other. His species uses their tails as clubs to kill smaller creatures that irritate them.[17]
