Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ,   Mekagojira), known as the S.S. Mechagodzilla, is a space-fairing transforming Mecha that appears in the 2025 IDW Publishing comic Starship Godzilla. It serves as the central form of transportation for Ayan and the crew onboard, whilst also acting as their main method of attack during battles against Gamagera, SpaceGodzilla, and the Xilien fleet.

Name

Main article: Mechagodzilla#Name.

Mechagodzilla's name is a combination of "mecha," which is derived from "mechanical," and "Godzilla" (ゴジラ,   Gojira).

In promotional and advertising material as well as the trade paperback Starship Godzilla: First Wars, the space mecha is varyingly referred to as the S.S. Mechagodzilla[4] or simply Mechagodzilla[5][6]. However, its name is never mentioned by the characters within the comic itself and is instead referred to generically as "the ship". Curiously, several descriptions for various Starship Godzilla issues appear to refer to Mechagodzilla as the Starship Godzilla, the name of the series itself,[1][2] while issue 3's description strangely provides the alternate name S.S. Godzilla[3].

Design

The design of the S.S. Mechagodzilla was created by comic artist Oliver Ono and greatly resembles Kiryu. That being said, the Mechagodzilla in Starship Godzilla possesses many differences. It is often portrayed as being muted teal in color, rather than the usual silver that other incarnations sport, with dark grey wires beneath its armor. It also possesses various dark grey and red accents all over its body. Mechagodzilla is shown to be more angular and chunky, rather than being smooth and streamlined like Kiryu, though this could be a result of the comic's art style.

Mechagodzilla has large yellow eyes with visible vertical grooves, with a red wires that run underneath them onto its snout like Kiryu, though these don't appear to glow and are always shown as being red. The top of Mechagodzilla's head is multi-layered with a large spike that points backwards, this spike has a vertical red stripe at its base with a large yellow light the front. It has a short, blocky snout with a small cylindrical apparatus on its nose with a hatch that can be opened to let a person exit the ship. Also located on its nose is a small red, upside-down triangle, there are also large red triangular accents located on its shoulders and legs. Mechagodzilla's "cheeks" extrude outwards and have a large red arrow-shaped accent on its side. On the front of its cheeks are multiple dark grey vents. Mechagodzilla's tail has no exposed wiring in-between its tail segments. Its tail tip is large and rectangular, with a large yellow light and two wing-like spikes on its sides

Mechagodzilla has a dark blue backpack similar to Super Weapons Kiryu, however this backpack seems to be built into the mecha rather than being detachable. Two large wings extend out from the sides of this backpack. There are also multiple circular hatches above its wings that resemble the missile hatches on Super Weapons Kiryu. Mechagodzilla has beam cannons that can fold down onto its shoulders and in the center of its back is a large tower, which seems to be the ship's bridge, with two small wings on its sides. There are various yellow lights on its back, with some of them seeming to be windows.

When Mechagodzilla transforms into its Ship Form, it takes on a horizontal posture. Its head and arms point forwards, parallel to its head, whilst its knees collapse and tuck into its thighs with its feet sticking out. Mechagodzilla's abdomen is hidden as its chest and hips are brought closer together. Its tail also straightens out and retracts, becoming shorter.

Origin

The S.S. Mechagodzilla was created by Gen, Ayan's grandmother.

History

Starship Godzilla

"Chapter One: Comet Salt"

The S.S. Mechagodzilla, piloted by Ilsa, burst through a glass dome roof to retrieve Rohan and Ayan, who were on the run after stealing rare Kaiju Eggs. Once they were on board, the ship and its crew promptly flew back into space. After one of the Kaiju eggs hatched, the creature escaped and caused major damage to the ship before it was eventually calmed down by Ayan.

Starship Godzilla #2

The S.S. Mechagodzilla was brought back to the planet of Ayan's grandmother, Gen, where the ship promptly crashed into the ground. Gen proceeded to scold Rohan for the state that her ship was in, with Rohan going into specifics about what had happened to it. Rohan also revealed that unless they were to get new parts, the ship was stuck on this planet. Ayan and Gen were in the process of stealing parts for the ship when Ghidorah arrived on the planet. After the monster was distracted, the S.S. Mechagodzilla quickly took off with its crew.

"Chapter Three: First Date"

The S.S. Mechagodzilla was brought to the planet where Rohan would deliver the Kaiju Eggs they had stolen to its mystery buyer, the Xilien Elvira. After Frey had released the monster, Gamagera, from the control of the Xiliens, the monster's subsequent rampage caused massive boulders to nearly fall on Rohan to which the S.S. Mechagodzilla, piloted by Gen, used its Space Beams to destroy the falling debris. It then proceeded to let evacuating aliens aboard the ship. The S.S. Mechagodzilla got into a brief fight with Gamagera, taking a hit from its energy beam and retaliating by firing its missiles and entering close quarters combat with the monster. After Ayan explained that the monster was attacking its Xilien captors, the ship promptly left the planet after Ayan managed to get back on board.

"Chapter Four: Return of the King, Part One"

The S.S. Mechagodzilla had landed on the mushroom moon, Nitrus S, when Ayan unexpectedly got a call from Frey who was asking for a favor. Ayan quickly got into the ship's bridge and left the planet, much to Gen and Rohan's dismay. Ayan piloted the S.S. Mechagodzilla into a section of space were it encountered SpaceGodzilla trying to fight off the Xiliens who wanted to control it, as well as Frey's crew who were trying to help the monster. Rohan agreed to help Frey and the others before leaving and the S.S. Mechagodzilla proceeded to let survivors aboard the ship. The S.S. Mechagodzilla then flew off to the crystal planet, Tama 7, where Frey's base of operations was located.

"Chapter Five: Return of the King, Part Two"

After Ayan woke up after being stunned by Rohan, she quickly found out that the ship was overrun by the Xiliens and was being restrained by cables. Ayan quickly snuck into the bridge and got into the controls, where she briefly managed to free the ship, though it was completely surrounded. The Xilien-controlled SpaceGodzilla proceeded to slam its fists into the ship which gave Elvira the chance to subdue Ayan, and revealed that she was able to find the ship and Frey's base of operations by using an energy trail left on it by SpaceGodzilla. Elvira decided she would be generous and left the ship, leaving the crew alive but not before leaving them with enough money to keep the S.S. Mechagodzilla "running for years to come" which she considered an "investment".

"Chapter Six: Return of the King, Part Three"

Ayan had convinced Rohan and the crew to fly back over to Tama 7 to rescue Frey and the others from the invading Xiliens. Upon arriving on the planet, S.S. Mechagodzilla proceeded to get into a brawl with the Xilien-controlled SpaceGodzilla whilst Ayan got into a pod and flew out to retrieve Frey. At one point, the S.S. Mechagodzilla attempted to use its Space Beam at SpaceGodzilla, whose shoulder crystal had merely deflected the oncoming attack. The ship was seemingly on the verge of being destroyed by SpaceGodzilla until gigantic Magma Worms erupted from the crystalline ground and attacked the space monster, their body heat destroying the devices controlling him. The S.S. Mechagodzilla had retreated from the battle and flew back into space.

Abilities

Transformation

The S.S. Mechagodzilla can transform between its Ship form and its Mecha form.

Flight

The S.S. Mechagodzilla is shown to be capable of flight in both of its forms by using the thrusters on its back and on the bottoms of its feet. It has no issue flying through space and through the atmospheres of the different planets its crew takes it to.

Durability

The S.S. Mechagodzilla is shown to be extremely durable, being able to shrug off the beams of Gamagera and SpaceGodzilla. It was also often shown crashing into and through different objects without taking noticeable damage, and was also able to withstand entering the atmosphere of different planets, even surviving being engulfed in flames as it entered the crystal planet, Tama 7.

Missiles

The S.S. Mechagodzilla launching missiles at Gamagera.

The S.S. Mechagodzilla is shown to be able to fire missiles from somewhere on its body, presumably the circular hatches above the wings on its back.

Space Beams

Located on the S.S. Mechagodzilla's back are two large beam cannons that can fold down onto its shoulders. These cannons can fire rainbow-colored Space Beams which were shown to be capable of blasting large boulders apart. The S.S. Mechagodzilla can also fire a space beam from its mouth.

Physical abilities

The S.S. Mechagodzilla jabbing SpaceGodzilla in the face with its knee.

The S.S. Mechagodzilla was shown to be capable of brawling with the monster Gamagera, albeit briefly. Ayan was able to use the Mecha's strength, combined with its thrustors, to break free of the wires that Elvira's fleet had trapped it in. The S.S. Mechagodzilla was capable of delivering kicks and knee jabs at SpaceGodzilla, even pinning him to the ground with a flying kick.

Forearm turrets

The S.S. Mechagodzilla deploying turrets from the undersides of its forearms.

The S.S. Mechagodzilla can deploy two-barreled turrets from the undersides of its forearms, one on each side.

Boarding ramp

The S.S. Mechagodzilla unloading its crew through its mouth.

The S.S. Mechagodzilla's mouth acts as a boarding ramp that allows multiple people to exit and enter the ship.

Trivia

  • The S.S. Mechagodzilla being able to transform is similar to original proposed transforming Mechagodzilla concept for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
    • It is also coincidentally similar to the early proposed concepts for the Heisei MOGUERA, where the machine was originally conceptualized as transforming into an individual aircraft rather than splitting apart.
  • The S.S. Mechagodzilla's Space Beams are a clear reference to the Showa Mechagodzilla's ability of the same name.
