The threat's name is Godzilla. It first arrived in the sea of Japan long ago... Its sporadic appearances began as curses... sometimes, they were blessings as it fought to assert dominance over the world's kaiju. Godzilla returns to the sea after waging war. Mr. Fantastic tries to explain Godzilla's sudden appearance in New York (Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1)

Godzilla (ゴジラ,   Gojira) is a kaiju who appears in the comic trilogy of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, Godzilla: Infinity Roar, and Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse by Marvel Comics. After being awakened from dormancy by Mole Man and his vibranium staff, Godzilla sought to bring destruction and chaos to the Marvel universe, bringing down a multitude of heroes and villains who stood in his way.

Name

See also: Godzilla#Name.

Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ), comes from a combination of the Japanese approximation of "gorilla" (ゴリラ,   gorira), and kujira (クジラ), the Japanese word for "whale."

Design

Godzilla's design throughout the trilogy primarily takes inspiration from many of the Heisei designs. In some panels of both Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe and Godzilla: Infinity Roar, his design seems to change to more closely resemble other incarnations of the character, such as his 1954 design[1], as well as designs of the Millennium era, namely his 2001[2] and 2004[3] incarnations, the latter of which also being used for the main cover of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1.

At the end of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, Knull approaches Godzilla on the planet he was left stranded on and attaches a Symbiote to him, giving Godzilla the same red, dragon-esque emblem as on the King in Black's chest, as well as his signature red spiral emblem on the kaiju's forehead. This design carries over to the sequels as Godzilla gives in to Knull's influence.

Personality

In Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, Godzilla acts as a force of nature towards the residents of the Marvel universe, primarily only lashing out if provoked first. Upon meeting with his mind, Professor X shuddered in fear at the sheer horror of Godzilla's thoughts, realizing that a force of nature cannot be reasoned with like he had hoped.

Godzilla acts far more aggressively in Godzilla: Infinity Roar, rampaging across the galaxy at the command of Knull. Due to the Symbiote likely amplifying his negative emotions, Godzilla has become fueled by vengeance and hatred towards the heroes and villains that defeated him in the past.

Origins

Godzilla is described by Mr. Fantastic as having first emerged from the seas of Japan in the past and since appearing from time to time throughout history, being considered both a blessing and curse overall due to his rampages often meaning the end of other attacking kaiju. Godzilla initially appears in a deep slumber in a cave full of crystals, having been awoken by Mole Man using the vibranium staff forged by his people.

History

Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe

Issue #1

After the discovery of a unique and unstable vibranium alloy within the mines of the underground kingdom of Subterranea, the Moloids had managed to forge a powerful staff out of the metal for their king, the Mole Man, to use as a weapon of conquest. Unbeknownst to them, the energy fired out of the staff would only serve to awaken Godzilla from his slumber.

Following the premature arrival of a Celestial in New York City, a panicked Mole Man rushed to the surface to point Reed Richards to the reason for the cosmic being's sudden awakening, Godzilla, who burst out of New York Harbor to face it. The King of the Monsters made quick work of the Celestial, disembowling it before letting out a roar of victory before discarding the organ. As Godzilla began walking away, Mole Man fired a blast of energy from his staff at the kaiju's face, aggravating him further and thus making him and the surrounding Fantastic Four a target of his destruction. Godzilla stomped down on the team, only for them to be shielded by a force field from the Invisible Woman. A level-ten threat was then issued by Richards, calling the Avengers and X-Men to action.

The Avengers assembled in New York minutes later, focused on turning Godzilla back to the water and saving whoever they could from the monster's rampage. Despite the combined efforts of the two superhero teams, Godzilla still managed to wreck numerous buildings through the city, the Thing finding himself in the kaiju's grip all the while. Thor then arrived at the scene, underestimating the beast as he was abruptly whipped by Godzilla's tail, sending him flying into Earth's orbit.

Richards was familiar with Godzilla, recalling his origins in Japan, where he would attack cities sporadically. As destructive as the attacks were, they were occasionally considered to be blessings in disguise, as other attacking kaiju like Kumonga often yielded to the monster king. Richards theorized that Godzilla's appearance was due to him viewing Mole Man's vibranium staff as a threat, since he had an apparent vulnerability to its energy. Despite his hesitation, Richards continued to put his plan for Godzilla into operation with the aid of Black Panther.

Attempting to release himself from Godzilla's grip, the Thing bit down on Godzilla's finger, causing the monster to throw him through the Daily Bugle's window, straight into the office of J. Jonah Jameson. Grimm then joked that Godzilla came from Spider-Man taking the Lizard's serum, which Jameson had theorized himself.

With the fight pressing on, Captain America threw his shield at Godzilla's nose, giving one last chance for the kaiju to leave before the heroes would escalate their actions against him further. Godzilla then charged up his atomic breath, but the Captain acted quickly, blocking the ray with his shield, causing it to reflect back at Godzilla's chest, which inflicted a gaping wound that exposed the kaiju's heart. After healing from the wound and seeing that Captain America had been taken away from the scene by Quicksilver to the Baxter Building, Godzilla leapt towards it as Mr. Fantastic began charging his device, which was designed to transport the beast into the Negative Zone. Before the device could properly fire, Godzilla smashed through the building, causing the portal to swing backward onto Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and Captain America, causing them to disappear into the Negative Zone as the upper third of the building collapsed. Godzilla paid no mind to it after that, and merely continued to wreak havoc on New York as the remaining heroes were forced to regroup.

Issue #2

In the year 2099, the war against Godzilla raged on, with an aged Johnny Storm taking up leadership over a new Fantastic Four, consisting of Forge, Riri Williams, and Tony Stark. As Godzilla began to close in on their location in New York, Johnny bought the rest of his team time to fire a beacon into the Negative Zone, shooting flames directly at Godzilla's face with all of his might. With the beacon launched, the rest of the Fantastic Four urged Johnny to escape with his life, but his flames combined with Godzilla's atomic breath ultimately resulted in an immense explosion viewable from space, extinguishing the last group of resistance against the King of the Monsters.

Back in the present, Godzilla's fight against the heroes of New York pressed on, with Spider-Man and Daredevil struggling to hold the monster off, the former's senses failing to be triggered by any attack from him. At the same time, Ant-Man and the Wasp fired a shot of Pym Particles directly at Godzilla's eye, which only served to briefly agitate the beast rather than shrink him down. In his rage, Godzilla stomped on the Bar with No Name, making it collapse on all of the criminals inside.

As the array of villains stormed out of the wreckage of their beloved bar, they dubbed themselves the Avengers of the Bar with No Name, with the Rhino leading the charge against Godzilla. Sandman and Hydro-Man enlarged their arms, both socking Godzilla in the face and causing him to stagger. Venom also briefly contributed to the onslaught, forming his hand into an axe and angrily slashing Godzilla's face, before the Symbiote abruptly separated from Eddie Brock, now seeing Godzilla as the superior host. Before the Venom Symbiote could make contact, Spider-Man quickly intervened, webbing the separated duo away from the scene.

As time marched on, more heroes had entered the fray, putting aside their quarrel with the villains to unite against Godzilla. To the shock and horror of the combatants, Godzilla began charging his atomic breath, with many reflecting on the choices that led them to this moment. Before the heat ray could fire, Doctor Strange arrived at the scene, enveloping Godzilla in the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak to force the kaiju's mouth shut. The monster's rage proved too much for the magic restraints, as Godzilla ferociously ripped them apart to set himself free, much to the shock of Strange.

Captain Marvel had then returned from space with Thor and Fin Fang Foom, the latter of which being promised payment from Odin. Godzilla was then struck with Mjolnir, before being tackled to the ground by Fin Fang Foom, the two giants engaging in a brawl. The Makluan then released his acid breath onto the kaiju, expecting for it to cut the fight short so he can quickly claim his prize, though Godzilla quickly retaliates with a blast of atomic breath, incapacitating the space dragon.

Doctor Strange then began to conjure a massive portal behind Godzilla that led to the Astral Plane, with Daredevil calling for a coordinated attack on the monster to push him into it. The heroes and villains then concentrated all of their abilities onto Godzilla, with Stilt-Man inflicting the finishing blow, leading to the monster king plummeting into the endless void. Before Godzilla could counteract with another heat ray, Strange sealed the portal, trapping Godzilla within the dimension.

Issue #3

Decades passed by in the Astral Plane, Godzilla continuing to roam in search of a way out, resulting in the death of many demons who crossed his path. Eventually, Godzilla came upon Dormammu, believing the kaiju to carry a message of sorts from his rival, Doctor Strange. Not long after, Godzilla had blasted the Lord of the Dark Dimension directly in the face with a heat ray, causing him to cry out in pain, now viewing Godzilla as a call for war from Strange. Dormammu then cast a portal, sending Godzilla back to his home dimension to end the attack. Godzilla had returned to Earth at the exact moment in time he had previously been sealed away, this time making landfall in Madripoor. Godzilla's ravaging through the city was witnessed by Wolverine, who called the rest of the X-Men to aid him in dealing with the beast.

In a few minutes, the X-Men arrived in the Blackbird, opening fire on Godzilla before deploying Nightcrawler, Colossus, Rogue, Gambit, and Jean Grey to fight him directly. Cyclops and Professor X remained in the jet, keeping Godzilla distracted as Xavier attempted to meet with the monster's mind. After the X-Men converged, Jean Grey released a telekinetic blast, much to Godzilla's continued irritation. Colossus and Wolverine then performed their Fastball Special, the clawed mutant flying into and stabbing Godzilla's chest, causing the kaiju to roar out in pain. After Rogue led Godzilla's claw away from him, Wolverine continued to viciously cut into the monster's flesh, quickly learning of his healing factor and armored hide.

Not long after, Magneto had appeared at the request of Xavier, soon lifting Wolverine by his adamantium skeleton and spinning him around at a high speed, plunging him into Godzilla's chest like a drill, causing the monster to topple back in pain and fall to the ground. The Master of Magnetism's victory was short lived, as Godzilla would heal back the wound in seconds before unleashing his atomic breath on Magneto, who blocked the blast with his magnetic shield before pulling an injured Wolverine in as well.

Nightcrawler had devised a strategy amid teleporting citizens away from the scene, working with Cyclops to destroy numerous barrels of hot sauce for Godzilla to inhale, ultimately causing the monster king to let out nothing more than a sneeze. As Professor X continued to communicate with Godzilla's mind, he was met with horrors he failed to anticipate. Xavier soon learned of Godzilla's impure thoughts and mind, realizing that a force of nature could not be reasoned with and thus had to be destroyed.

In a coordinated effort, Gambit had charged up the giant metal cards atop the Lady Luck Casino sign, with Rogue dealing the cards to each of her teammates. The X-Men and Magneto then threw all of the charged cards towards Godzilla, colliding all at once before exploding, the Princess Bar being caught in the crossfire. Soon after, Professor X returned to Godzilla's mind one last time to send him a message from Black Panther. The Wakandan king began mentally attacking Godzilla, challenging him to a battle in Wakanda. Godzilla had accepted Black Panther's challenge, swimming off to war.

Issue #4

Godzilla made his way towards Wakanda, engaging in battle with numerous warriors of the kingdom of Atlantis along the way, causing multiple earthquakes in the area.

Upon coming ashore in Wakanda, Godzilla had come across his next challenger, Bruce Banner, who was armed with a syringe full of Pym Particles. Despite viewing Godzilla as somewhat of a kindred spirit, Banner had no choice but to inject himself with the particles, transforming into the Hulk, now at a size comparable to his opponent.

The two rageful monsters quickly engaged in brutal combat, both inflicting hits with enough power to draw blood from the other. Realizing the gravity of Godzilla's strength, Hulk armed himself with a massive hammer, striking the kaiju hard enough to send him flying backward into the ground. Before Hulk could slice him with an equally massive battle axe, Godzilla countered with a tail attack, briefly knocking Hulk down.

After Godzilla let out a defeaning roar, Hulk threw the kaiju onto his discarded battle axe, causing a wound that would only be intensified by the Jade Giant stomping down on and thus plunging the axe further into his foe's body. Godzilla thinks fast and grabs Hulk's ankle, twisting it to the point of a fracture. The two monsters then bite down on each other, with Godzilla charging up his heat ray, instilling a rare moment of fear in the Hulk. Godzilla then released his atomic beam, which spread all throughout the Hulk's body, causing him to slump to the ground, defeated.

Godzilla removed Hulk's axe from his dorsal plates, before letting out a roar of victory, but the battle had yet to conclude. Rising from the depths behind Godzilla came Namor the Sub-Mariner, who had sought vengeance against Godzilla for slaughtering many of his kingdom's soldiers. Suddenly, Namor presented his trump card, sending the giant crustacean kaiju Ebirah after Godzilla, now being under the Sub-Mariner's control. As Ebirah kept Godzilla occupied, Namor quickly flew an injured Bruce Banner to safety.

After a brief struggle, Godzilla sent Ebirah hurtling back to the sea he came from. Godzilla then looked upward, a massive object rapidly approaching him from above. At that moment, a new mecha had struck Godzilla in the face with a kick, as well as an amplified optic blast from Cyclops. Black Panther's answer to Godzilla's might, Mecha Adaptoid Centurion Mark-Ⓐ, was ready to face the King of the Monsters.

Abilities

Atomic breath

Godzilla employs his signature atomic breath (放射熱線,   hōsha nessen, lit. radioactive heat ray) on occasion throughout Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, appearing as a powerful blue beam of radiation in line with many versions of the character. It likewise boasts significant destructive capabilities, being able to cause an explosion visible from Earth's orbit in conjunction with the 2099 Human Torch's powers, as well as being capable of incapacitating powerhouses like Fin Fang Foom, Dormammu, and a giant Hulk in single blasts. The beam also possesses radiation potent enough for Magneto to feel the heat through his magnetic shield.

In Godzilla: Infinity Roar, Godzilla's atomic breath is enhanced immensely by both the Symbiote granted to him by Knull, as well as the Power Cosmic absorbed from Galactus, now possessing the raw power to completely devastate numerous technologically advanced galactic civilizations like the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda and the Shi'ar Empire, and obliterate beings like Tritanica and a giant Iceman with minimal effort.

Physical abilities

Godzilla demonstrates superb fighting capabilities in Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe. The King of the Monsters was able to disembowel a Celestial, as well as hold his own against and eventually overpower a giant-sized Hulk.

In Godzilla: Infinity Roar, his abilities are likewise further enhanced by Knull's Symbiote, allowing him to mortally wound King Ghidorah by skewering him through the chest, as well as bursting through Galactus's chest after the world devourer failed to consume him.

Durability

Very few forces throughout the trilogy were able to penetrate Godzilla's hide or even cause him to stagger significantly, with most attacks simply aggravating him. When shot in the eye with Pym Particles by Ant-Man, the kaiju simply shrugged it off before continuing to rampage. The combined might of the Avengers of the Bar With No Name alongside a myriad of other heroes and villains were merely capable of pushing Godzilla backward into a portal to the Astral Plane, though the monster king was ultimately left without a scratch.

Regeneration

Godzilla possesses a highly efficient healing factor, being able to regenerate wounds that left much of his inner flesh and internal organs exposed in a matter of seconds, including a reflected blast of his own atomic breath by Captain America briefly exposing the monster's heart, as well as being impaled by an enlarged version of Magik's Soulsword.

Amphibiousness

Being a monster of oceanic origin, Godzilla is able to swim and breathe underwater. Aquatic travel seemingly has no hamper on his strength, as Godzilla was able to defeat many Atlanteans that their king, Namor, considered to be the some of the finest warriors the kingdom had to offer.

Symbiote enhancement

In Godzilla: Infinity Roar, Godzilla is under the influence of a Symbiote he received from Knull, which greatly enhances his abilities and negative emotions, making the monster more rageful in addition to being more powerful. The enhancement also granted him the ability to swim through space, allowing him to travel from planet to planet.

Weaknesses

Despite his efficient healing factor, many forces are shown to be able to penetrate Godzilla's hide, though not for very long. After having his own atomic breath reflected back at his chest by Captain America's shield, Godzilla heals back the immense, heart-exposing gash in a matter of seconds. Wolverine's adamantium claws are also shown to be able to penetrate Godzilla's hide, further demonstrated by Magneto using Logan as a drill, causing Godzilla to temporarily fall backwards due to the inflicted injury.

In Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, Godzilla is shown throughout the story to be vulnerable to an unstable vibranium alloy forged by Mole Man and his people, which is later used to the advantage of the heroes as they synthesize and incorporate it into Mecha Adaptoid Centurion Mark-Ⓐ's weaponry with the help of Shuri.

In Godzilla: Infinity Roar, Godzilla is initially forced to the ground because of Black Bolt's sonic scream, causing much of the monster king's flesh to wither off of his body, though he regenerates his wounds to counterattack not long after. Godzilla is also temporarily halted by the Casket of Ancient Winters during his attack on Asgard, causing him to freeze in a block of ice.
