G-Guard discussing Anguirus's situation (Godzilla Island episode 179 "Hedgehog's Dilemma")

Anguirus (アンギラス,   Angirasu) is a giant Ankylosaurus-like kaiju who appeared in the 1997-1998 tv show Godzilla Island and was the focus of the 17th story arc. This Anguirus was one of several kaiju who lived on Godzilla Island and while he did not usually get involved in the various crises on the island, he did play a role in some events such as the battles against Mecha-King Ghidorah and played a very key role during the invasion of Gororin.

Name

Main article: Anguirus#Name.

Anguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス), comes from the Japanese spelling of the name of the dinosaur genus Ankylosaurus (アンキロサウルス,   Ankirosaurusu), upon which the monster's design is based.

The tag for the Anguirus figure in Bandai's Godzilla Island Monster Series toy line combines the romaji for Anguirus' subtitle, Fierce Dragon (暴竜,   Bōryū), with his English name, giving the figure the name Bōryu Anguirus (ボウリュウアンギラス,   Bōryū Angirasu).[1]

Design

The toy used to portray this Anguirus is a Bandai Godzilla Island Monster Series figure of the Second Generation Anguirus design.

Personality

Anguirus appears to be a good friend of the other monsters on Godzilla Island, particularly Baragon and Gorosaurus, though usually did not get involved in the conflicts on the island and preferred to stick to himself and the other monsters during these crises. However, Anguirus appears to be a closer ally of Godzilla and G-Guard than either Baragon or Gorosaurus as unlike either of them, Anguirus did not join Kamacuras and Mecha-King Ghidorah and instead chose to ally with the other monsters against the cyborg.

The 17th story arc expands on Anguirus's personality and shows him to be very remorseful after accidently hurting Junior with the spikes on his carapace, deliberately isolating himself to avoid hurting them, continuing to do this even after Misato Jinguji tries to encourage him. After attempting to expose the cactus monster Gororin for what it really is but failing to make the others realise, Anguirus is deeply hurt by G-Guard Commander Beisuke Jinguji's accusations that Anguirus was jealous of the cactus since it also has spikes, he continues to isolate himself. However, after it is discovered that Anguirus holds the best chance at stopping Gororin, he saves Beisuke's life and returns to his usual disposition as a friend of the other monsters after defeating Gororin for good.

Godzilla Island

Introducing Torema

Anguirus was briefly seen alongside Little Mothra, Baragon, Gorosaurus, Rodan and Godzilla as a resident of Godzilla Island.

King Ghidorah

The various monsters living on Godzilla Island suddenly went berserk and began to attack one another, with Anguirus squaring off against Baragon. The two stopped fighting when Torema destroyed the Berserker Wave Tower constructed by the Xiliens, the reason for the monster's odd behaviour. Anguirus was later seen at the monster hospital, requiring treatment due to his injuries.

Junior Kidnapped

Anguirus could be seen alongside the other inhabitants of Godzilla Island during a period of peace on the island. Anguirus was later seen watching Torema transport Junior back to Godzilla Island, having found him on Matango Island, with Godzilla and Rodan until Battra cut the line and flew back to Matango Island with Junior.

Gigan

After Godzilla lost his duel with Gigan, forcing him to learn a new technique for the rematch, and the two later commenced their second duel, Anguirus went to King Caesar's Monster Temple along with the other monsters on the island to voice their concerns about the duel to King Caesar who insisted that they should not interfere in a one-on-one fight and that Godzilla would win. Anguirus appeared with the other monsters to celebrate Godzilla's victory after Godzilla won his second duel with Gigan.

Mothra

After a meteor landed on Godzilla Island and destroyed the underground wastewater treatment plant, Anguirus watched with several of the other monsters when a bomb planted by Zagreth blew up the nearby chemical plant, releasing a cloud of toxic smoke. Anguirus collapsed from the fumes spread by the meteor which was aiding the smoke in growing, also being hurt by the resulting acid rain. After Torema tricked Zagreth into using her neutraliser on the smog, Anguirus was left powerless due to his injuries and was unable to defend the island against Hedorah who formed from the toxic smoke despite Zagreth being tricked into using her neutraliser.

Mecha-King Ghidorah

After Beisuke Jinguji returned to Godzilla Island under the mind control of the Xiliens, Anguirus was one of the monsters who had a metal collar fitted on him by Mechagodzilla and Moguera. After Godzilla defeated both Mechagodzilla and Moguera, Anguirus and the other monsters joined Godzilla in raiding the G-Gard base. Anguirus' collar was later removed by Beisuke Jinguji, having had his mind-control severed after Torema made fun of his real name. Anguirus later prepared to leave the island with the other monsters as they felt they were unable of trusting a commander who was easily controlled by the enemy though he was knocked down by Mecha-King Ghidorah's laser beams before he could leave the island. Despite this, Anguirus and the other monsters ignored Jinguji's orders to attack Mecha-King Ghidorah as the cyborg attacked the G-Guard base as they had lost respect for the commander and didn't join the fight when Godzilla began to fight Mecha-King Ghidorah. However, Anguirus joined the other monsters in attacking Mecha-King Ghidorah after seeing Beisuke Jinguji pilot Mechagodzilla to help Godzilla and after King Caesar encouraged the others to join the fight. Anguirus bit one of Mecha-King Ghidorah's tails and continued doing this even after the cyborg retreatd into space, with Anguirus being dropped to the ground as a result. Anguirus then joined the other monsters in praising Beisuke Jinguji for his role in the battle while piloting Mechagodzilla.

Mysteries of Godzilla Island

Anguirus was briefly seen in a flashback while Torema and Lucas discussed Mechagodzilla and Moguera, with the flashback in question showing the time Beisuke Jinguji was hypnotised and used the two robots to place metal collars on the various monsters of Godzilla Island. Lucas also mentioned Anguirus's Valley as a point of interest.

SpaceGodzilla's Spirit

While possessed by SpaceGodzilla's spirit, Godzilla appeared in Anguirus's Valley and attacked the ankylosaur monster with atomic breath, knocking Anguirus back. He then absorbed Anguirus's aura and made his way towards Gorosaurus's Village. After Godzilla was exorcised by King Caesar and Godzilla killed SpaceGodzilla with assistance from both his son Junior and Torema in the Panna Torte, Anguirus's aura was returned to him and he came back to life.

The Artificial Sun

Anguirus was first seen alongside Godzilla, Rodan and Gorosaurus, all four monsters reacting in discomfort to the presence of a second sun the Xiliens sent over the island. Anguirus and Baragon continued to react in discomfort as the days went on without nights and all the water sources dry up. Anguirus and Godzilla then noticed a forest fire breaking out due to the dryness of the air, with Beisuke Jinguji deploying Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar in response. After Torema successfully destroyed the artificial sun with the anti-aircraft laser cannon thanks to Godzilla and Rodan's help, Anguirus celebrated the arrival of rain with the other monsters on the island.

Mechagodzilla

Anguirus watched with several other monsters as Zagreth landed on Godzilla Island while piloting Black Mechagodzilla in order to challenge Torema to a duel. Torema showed up to the duel using the Mechagodzilla built by G-Guard and told the monsters not to interfere in the duel as it was only between her and Zagreth, the monsters reluctantly backing away as a result. However, when Zagreth cowardly cheated and shot Mechagodzilla before the agreed five steps were over, Anguirus and the other monsters furiously attacked Black Mechagodzilla and kicked it to the ground. Anguirus and Baragon later came across Zagreth as she stole Proto-Moguera and used the robot to destroy the construction site where a second G-Guard base was being built but they were knocked back when she activated dynamite nearby. After Godzilla appeared and was then knocked down by Proto-Moguera's eye lasers, Anguirus and Baragon fearfully backed away.

Goodbye, Torema

After Kamacuras tricked Godzilla and Torema into going into a trap on Matango Island, Kamacuras and Mecha-King Ghidorah attacked the G-Guard base and all the monsters and robots there including Anguirus. After the monsters recover, Kamacuras returned to the island and tried to convince them in joining Zagreth in her invasion of Earth, telling them that Zagreth is their true ally though and lied that Godzilla died on Matango Island. While Anguirus did not join the Xiliens like Baragon and Gorosaurus, he walked away back to his den to watch the situation as it developed. While Baragon and Gorosaurus invaded the base with Mecha-King Ghidorah and Kamacuras, Anguirus and some of the other monsters tried to stop Mecha-King Ghidorah while Mechagodzilla was overwhelmed by Baragon and Gorosaurus but was unsuccessful. However, Godzilla appeared and all the monsters joined him in swarming Mecha-King Ghidorah and driving the cyborg into retreat, Anguirus in particular biting Mecha-King Ghidorah's tail. Anguirus later watched with all the other monsters and robots on the island when Torema left to try and defeat Zagreth.

Bonus

Anguirus was seen in a flashback when Lucas and Beisuke Jinguji talked about the time Godzilla was possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost and began to attack the other monsters on Godzilla Island.

Introducing Misato

When the Vabaruda reappeared after a year of peace on Godzilla Island, Anguirus and the other monsters were seen reacting to its presence. The UFO later reappeared and shot at them, blowing them away. Anguirus was later one of the kaiju who greeted Misato Jinguji when she came to the island and visited the monsters though ran in terror when she attempted to get a blood sample from him for a check-up using Medical Jet Jaguar. Anguirus was among the monsters who watched when a Xilien missile landed on Godzilla Island and began emitting yellow smoke after Junior knocked it over, though the monsters do not realise the danger of the smoke and begin dancing when Randeth, who had been appointed by the Giant Dark Emperor after firing Zagreth, plays music from a giant radio. The monsters continued dancing for days, even after Jinguji piloted Mechagodzilla in a failed attempt to shoot the radio down. While Misato is able to counter Randeth's plans using opposing sound waves, the damage had already been done by that point and the monsters collapsed from exhaustion. Anguirus began dancing once again after Misato played music against King Ghidorah when she infected the space monster with dance-globin smoke using Medical Jet Jaguar to help Godzilla fight King Ghidorah.

Second Generation Mothra

When an earthquake struck Godzilla Island due to the eruption of Mt. Gorath, Anguirus and many of the monsters reacted in fear to it though they recovered quickly from the shock. Anguirus was later seen as one of the many monsters webbed up by Baby Mothra when the young monster rampaged through Godzilla Island while under the impression that Battra was her parent.

Anguirus

While waiting in line as part of a monster check-up, Gorosaurus and Baragon accidently pushed Junior into Anguirus's spiky carapace. Misato, piloting Medical Jet Jaguar, went to check on him and realised that he was hurt by Anguirus's carapace, with Anguirus becoming very sad and walking away from the line despite Misato's insistence she wasn't blaming him. Anguirus isolated himself on a cliff on three days much to the concern of G-Guard and Misato went to check on him, telling him that his spikes were what made him special though he ignored her and walked away. While walking during the night, Anguirus noticed an object crash-land on Godzilla Island, the object being an unusually giant cactus named Gororin and a new area and attraction was set up by G-Guard who named it Cactus Square, though Anguirus was the only one who understood that it was a threat. Anguirus investigated it the night after Cactus Square was officially established and saw Gororin open a pair of eyes and fire spines at him though these reflected off his carapace. Anguirus attacked Gororin with his carapace as it went dormant and he was spotted by some of the other monsters and Beisuke Jinguji, with Godzilla roaring at him to stop attacking the cactus and Beisuke scolding him for attacking it as he assumed Anguirus was jealous of another thing with spikes. Anguirus retreated back to his valley where Misato apologised to him on her father's behalf and asked him if he had a good reason for attacking Gororin though she was called back to the base due to a problem: Gororin had gone berserk and was attacking the other monsters.

Anguirus was later sleeping during Gororin's rampage through the entire island when the cactus monster charged through Anguirus's Valley towards him, ignoring shots from Misato's ship the Tart Coupe. It charged towards him and hit him but merely reflected off his carapace without hurting him, only causing him to wake up. Noticing this, Misato told him he may be their only hope and he turned around to see Mechagodzilla landing behind him as Beisuke apologised to him. Anguirus was reluctant to accept his apology but Gororin reappeared and attempted to squash Beisuke though Anguirus was able to save him by pushing Gororin up against the side of a nearby mountain. Godzilla and some of the other monsters attempted to help but were repelled by Gororin's spines. Just as Anguirus began to tire from the strain of pinning Gororin down, Nao Koda arrived in Moguera with a special weed-killer on its arm and stabbed Gororin, causing its spines to fall off. Anguirus passed it to Godzilla, who threw it at the Vabaruda as Randeth approached to try and retrieve Gororin, killing Gororin and forcing Randeth to retreat. With the threat defeated, Anguirus was praised by the monsters and returned to his usual disposition as a friend of the others.

SpaceGodzilla's Spirit Again

Anguirus first appeared in a flashback showing the time he had his aura removed by the SpaceGodzilla-possessed Godzilla. Anguirus later appeared at the Monster Shrine alongside Godzilla, Misato in the Tart Coupe, King Caesar, Baragon and Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar after it was burnt down, and allowed Misato to take photos of him to check if he was possessed. An image of Anguirus later appeared on Misato's computer as she checked to see who had an alibi for the incident which led to Gorosaurus being put in critical condition. Beisuke interrupted her research to tell her that Anguirus and Baragon were fighting presumably due to fears of ghostly possession, and both she and King Caesar tried to break up the fight between them as they ignored her and wrestled. However, their fight was truly interrupted by fog signalling the reappearance of SpaceGodzilla's ghost as they realised he had possessed King Caesar. SpaceGodzilla then abandoned King Caesar and briefly entered Baragon before abandoning him as well and briefly entering Anguirus before entering Mothra Leo. Having shown his ability to potentially possess any of them, SpaceGodzilla roared at the group as they ran in fear.

Anguirus did not reappear for the rest of the story arc, where it was revealed SpaceGodzilla's ghost was actually a Xilien hologram and the real SpaceGodzilla in the more powerful form Super Special SpaceGodzilla High Grade Type 2 was defeated by the combined forces of Godzilla and Misato piloting Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar.

Fire Rodan

Anguirus was one of the several monsters attacked by the Xilien pawn Neo-Hedorah, causing him to sprout mushrooms on his back. While in the monster hospital alongside the similarly infected Junior, Baragon and Gorosaurus, Anguirus and the others heard King Caesar requesting they pray to help transform Rodan into Fire Rodan. After Fire Rodan and Godzilla successfully killed Neo-Hedorah and Misato was able to treat the infected monsters, Anguirus was seen relaxing with the other monsters.

Physical capabilities

Anguirus bit one of Mecha-King Ghidorah's tails when all the monsters on Godzilla Island teamed up to fight the cyborg and held on, even as the cyborg began to fly into space but was dropped. Anguirus also wrestled with Baragon during the SpaceGodzilla's Spirit Again arc, showing similar strength to him.

Carapace

Anguirus using his carapace to reflect Gororin's spines

Anguirus possesses a spiky carapace on his back which is effective in harming other monsters such as when he accidently hurt Junior with it. The carapace was also capable of reflecting Gororin's spines and he used his carapace to hit Gororin though this had no effect. Anguirus's carapace was also the only thing which was capable of stopping Gororin as the cactus monster merely bounced harmlessly off it and he pinned Gororin to the side of a mountain with it so that it couldn't move.

Durability

When dropped from a massive height by Mecha-King Ghidorah, Anguirus simply got back up without any noticeable pain or injuries after a few moments.

Intelligence

Anguirus was capable of coordinating with the other monsters against common threats such as Mecha-King Ghidorah when his help was necessary. He was also the only monster on the island who understood that Gororin was actually a threat after watching it crash-land on the island.

Weaknesses

Anguirus was hurt by the toxic fumes emitted by Hedorah's meteor and the resulting acid rain, which hurt every other monster on the island caught by it and sapped their power. Anguirus was also knocked back by Godzilla's atomic breath when he was possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost.

Anguirus was killed by Godzilla when he was possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost and absorbed Anguirus's aura though the ankylosaur monster was later returned back to life.
