Mothra is a giant monster who first appeared in IDW Publishing's comic book series Godzilla. The first incarnation of Mothra to be featured in an ongoing American comic book series, this Mothra was also featured in IDW's sequel series Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. A giant divine moth that suddenly made an appearance in 2013 above a highway along the coastline of California, Mothra persuaded Godzilla to cease pursuing a civilian family through unexplained non-verbal means before suddenly flying away. Along with the Shobijin, Mothra attempted to inform humanity of an approaching extraterrestrial threat. When the threat, a group of extraterrestrial monsters consisting of Gigan, Hedorah, SpaceGodzilla, and Monster X, happened, Mothra traveled to New York City to face the last mentioned enemy.
Name
The name "Mothra" is the suffixation of "-ra" (a common last syllable in kaiju names) to "moth." Since the Japanese language does not have dental fricatives, it is approximated "Mosura" in Japanese. Originally, Mothra's name was approximated in English as "Mosla," but it was later corrected to "Mothra" by the time of the release of her debut film[1]
Design
Mothra's appearance is identical to the Heisei-film Mothra from Godzilla vs. Mothra in both of her appearances.
In Godzilla, Mothra is almost completely reminiscent of her design inspiration, only contrasted by her emphasized hair-like lepidopteran fuzz.
In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Mothra is occasionally depicted as less saturated in color, making her appear more aged. Additionally, her fuzz is thicker, longer, and more prominent than it was in the previous series.
Mothra's larvae for the most part are reminiscent of their 1992 film counterpart's larval form as well as their 2003 iterations.
Personality
Mothra is a very benevolent and caring being, devoting her existence to protecting her worshippers on Infant Island and standing up to global threats. She went out of her way, alongside the Shobijin, to warn humanity of an incoming threat from space, which consisted of four malevolent extraterrestrial monsters. Mothra is a protective mother towards her offspring. Mothra was the only kaiju in the continuity that Godzilla never displayed any aggression or malice towards, as inferred by somehow non-verbally persuading him to cease chasing a civilian family in Godzilla.
