Rodan (ラドン is a flying reptilian kaiju who appeared in the Radon)1997-1998 tv show Godzilla Island and was the focus of the 19th story arc. This Rodan was one of several kaiju who lived on Godzilla Island and often battled the Xiliens and their various pawns such as Megalon and Battra in their repeated attempts to take over Earth.
Name
- Main article: Rodan#Name.
Rodan's Japanese name, Radon, is a truncation of "Pteranodon." It may also have been chosen to suggest radiation. The name was changed to "Rodan" in English-speaking markets in order to avoid confusion with the element radon.[2] Toho eventually trademarked the name "Rodan," making it the monster's official English name.
Design
Two toys are used to portray this Rodan: a figure of the Showa Rodan design and a figure of the Heisei Rodan design. The Showa Rodan toy saw no further usage after the Gigan arc and Rodan was only portrayed using the Heisei Rodan toy in all subsequent story arcs. When taking upon the transformation Fire Rodan, he simply resembles his regular form but golden, causing him to resemble a phoenix.
In some episodes he is depicted using stock footage from various Toho films such as Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and Invasion of Astro-Monster.

Origins
Rodan is one of the many monsters residing on Godzilla Island at the end of the 21st century. The Fire Rodan arc reveals through an ancient text that Misato Jinguji reads that Rodan is not the first of his kind and had ancestors who "became one with flame spirits" and so gained the ability to produce heat of very high temperatures, foreshadowing the transformation of Rodan himself into Fire Rodan later in the story arc.

Godzilla Island
Introducing Torema
Rodan was briefly seen alongside Little Mothra, Baragon, Gorosaurus, Anguirus and Godzilla as a resident of Godzilla Island.
King Ghidorah
The various monsters living on Godzilla Island suddenly went berserk and began to attack one another with Rodan battling Godzilla, dodging a blast of atomic breath and pecking at the monster. King Ghidorah then arrived on the island and began to cause chaos while Little Mothra was attempting to break up the fight between Godzilla and Rodan but the two duelling monsters did not listen to Little Mothra's words. The two stopped fighting when Torema destroyed the Berserker Wave Tower constructed by the Xiliens, the reason for the monster's odd behaviour, and they teamed up with Little Mothra to stop King Ghidorah. Rodan knocked both Godzilla and King Ghidorah as well as himself into the sea. Rodan was later seen at the monster hospital, requiring treatment due to his injuries.
The Trial of Godzilla
Having reported Battra and Megalon to be approaching Godzilla Island during Godzilla's trial, Beisuke Jinguji ordered Mothra and Rodan to stop the invading monsters with Mechagodzilla and Moguera acting as backup. Rodan battled Megalon in the sky and grappled with him until Moguera shot Megalon from behind with eye lasers. After Zagreth realised that Torema was assisting the Godzilla Island monsters and mechs, she ordered Megalon and Battra to retreat which ended the battle. However, Rodan was forced to go back to monster hospital as a result of his injuries.
Junior Kidnapped
Rodan was seen alongside the other inhabitants of Godzilla Island during a period of peace on the island. Rodan was later seen watching Torema transport Junior back to Godzilla Island, having found him on Matango Island, with Godzilla and Anguirus until Battra cut the line and flew back to Matango Island with Junior. After Godzilla invaded Matango Island and suffered massive damage from the Infrared Auto-Blaster installed near Junior's cage, Rodan picked Godzilla up and transported him to safety. Mother Mothra later landed in front of Godzilla and Rodan and they came up with a plan to rescue Junior. After Mothra disrupted the Auto-Blaster's sensors with her pollen and caused it to fire wildly, Rodan duelled Battra in the sky though the evil moth was quickly knocked down by the Auto-Blaster accidently firing at it. However, Zagreth summoned Destoroyah who easily defeats his enemies, including Rodan, until Godzilla finally defeated Destoroyah by kicking him in front of the damaged Auto-Blaster which fires at him and causes a large explosion.
Gigan
After Gigan struck Godzilla during a duel following a long stare-down and caused him to fall to the ground, Rodan appeared and carried Godzilla away to the hot spring on the island. Mother Mothra followed them after disorienting Gigan with her pollen. Godzilla mentioned Mothra and Rodan to King Caesar while relaxing in the hot spring, grateful for their interference in the fight. Rodan was later seen flying past Godzilla as he meditated in order to learn a new technique to help him fight. As Godzilla and Gigan commenced their second duel, Rodan later went to King Caesar's Monster Temple along with the other monsters on the island to voice their concerns about the duel to King Caesar who insisted that they should not interfere in a one-on-one fight and that Godzilla would win. Rodan appeared with the other monsters to celebrate Godzilla's victory after Godzilla won his second duel with Gigan.
Mothra
Rodan watched with Godzilla as a meteor landed on Godzilla Island, destroying the underground wastewater treatment plant but missing the nearby chemical plant. Rodan later watched with several of the other monsters when a bomb planted by Zagreth blew up the chemical plant, releasing a cloud of toxic smoke. Rodan collapsed from the fumes spread by the meteor which is aiding the smoke in growing, also being hurt by the resulting acid rain. After Torema tricked Zagreth into using her neutraliser on the smog, Rodan was left powerless due to his injuries and was unable to defend the island against Hedorah who formed from the toxic smoke despite Zagreth being tricked into using her neutraliser.
Mecha-King Ghidorah
After Beisuke Jinguji returned to Godzilla Island under the mind control of the Xiliens, Rodan was one of the monsters who had a metal collar fitted on him by Mechagodzilla and Moguera. After Godzilla defeated both Mechagodzilla and Moguera, Rodan and the other monsters joined Godzilla in raiding the G-Gard base. Rodan's collar was later removed by Beisuke Jinguji, having had his mind-control severed after Torema made fun of his real name. Rodan later prepared to leave the island with the other monsters as they felt they couldn't trust a commander who was easily controlled by the enemy. When Mecha-King Ghidorah returned and began to attack the G-Guard base, Rodan and the other monsters ignored Jinguji's orders to attack Mecha-King Ghidorah as the cyborg attacked the G-Guard base as they had lost respect for the commander. However, Rodan joined the other monsters in attacking Mecha-King Ghidorah after seeing Beisuke Jinguji pilot Mechagodzilla to help Godzilla and after King Caesar encouraged the others to join the fight. Rodan pecked the cyborg from behind as Gorosaurus bit down on one of Mecha-King Ghidorah's heads. Rodan joined the other monsters in praising Beisuke Jinguji for his role in the battle while piloting Mechagodzilla.
Mysteries of Godzilla Island
Rodan could be seen in flashbacks while Torema and Lucas swap questions: Rodan was briefly seen fighting Megalon in a flashback as the two discuss Mechagodzilla and Moguera, and also a flashback showing when Godzilla meditated in order to learn a new technique. Rodan's Hot Spring was also mentioned as being one of Godzilla's favourite places.
SpaceGodzilla's Spirit
Rodan went to visit Godzilla in the Monster Hospital but was attacked by the monster king when he woke up due to SpaceGodzilla's ghost possessing him. After absorbing Rodan's aura, Godzilla simply walked away. After Godzilla was exorcised by King Caesar and Godzilla killed SpaceGodzilla with assistance from both his son Junior and Torema in the Panna Torte, Rodan's aura was returned to him and he came back to life.
The Artificial Sun
Rodan was first seen alongside Godzilla, Anguirus and Gorosaurus, all four monsters reacting in discomfort to the presence of a second sun the Xiliens sent over the island. When Lucas reported Destoroyah and Megalon coming back to the island in order to attack the anti-aircraft laser cannon intended to destroy the artificial sun, Beisuke Jinguji ordered Godzilla and Rodan into action to stop the two monsters. Rodan battled Megalon in the sky while Destoroyah fought Godzilla on the ground. Rodan eventually knocked Megalon to the ground and causes him to land on Destoroyah just as he attempted to destroy the laser cannon, knocking both monsters out. After both monsters recovered at the same time as Godzilla and Destoroyah battled Godzilla once again, Rodan arrived and threw Megalon into Destoroyah once again, allowing Godzilla to fire his atomic breath at the solar panels which caused the laser cannon to charge up more quickly. After Torema successfully destroyed the artificial sun with the laser cannon and both Destoroyah and Megalon were ordered to retreat, Rodan celebrated the arrival of rain with the other monsters on the island.
Mechagodzilla
When Zagreth stole the construction robot Proto-Moguera, Rodan was one of the kaiju who attempted to stop her but was easily knocked down by the robot's eye lasers.
Goodbye, Torema
After Kamacuras tricked Godzilla and Torema into going into a trap on Matango Island, Kamacuras and Mecha-King Ghidorah attacked the G-Guard base and all the monsters and robots there including Rodan. After the monsters recovered, Kamacuras returned to the island and tried to convince them in joining Zagreth in her invasion of Earth, telling them that Zagreth is their true ally and lying that Godzilla died on Matango Island. While Rodan did not join the Xiliens like Baragon and Gorosaurus, he flew away back to his den to watch the situation as it develops. While Baragon and Gorosaurus invaded the base with Mecha-King Ghidorah and Kamacuras, Rodan and some of the other monsters tried to stop Mecha-King Ghidorah while Mechagodzilla was overwhelmed by Baragon and Gorosaurus but was unsuccessful. However, Godzilla appeared and began to fight Mecha-King Ghidorah with assistance from the other monsters. Rodan later watched with all the other monsters and robots on the island when Torema left to try and defeat Zagreth.
Bonus
Rodan could be seen in a flashback when Lucas and Beisuke Jinguji talked about the time Godzilla was possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost and began to attack the other monsters on Godzilla Island.
Introducing Misato
Rodan was seen flying around Godzilla and Junior during a peaceful period on Godzilla Island. Rodan and the other monsters were then seen reacting to the return of the Vabaruda, which later reappeared and shot at them, blowing them away. Rodan was later one of the kaiju who greeted Misato Jinguji when she came to the island and visited the monsters. Rodan was among the monsters who watched when a Xilien missile landed on Godzilla Island and began emitting yellow smoke after Junior knocked it over, though the monsters do not realise the danger of the smoke and begin dancing when Randeth, who had been appointed by the Giant Dark Emperor after firing Zagreth, plays music from a giant radio. The monsters continued dancing for days, even after Jinguji piloted Mechagodzilla in a failed attempt to shoot the radio down. While Misato is able to counter Randeth's plans using opposing sound waves, the damage had already been done by that point and the monsters collapsed from exhaustion.
Second Generation Mothra
When an earthquake struck Godzilla Island due to the eruption of Mt. Gorath, Rodan and many of the monsters reacted in fear to it though they recovered quickly from the shock. Rodan was later seen as one of the many monsters webbed up by Baby Mothra when the young monster rampaged through Godzilla Island while under the impression that Battra was her parent.
Dororin
Rodan listened to Misato as she told him, Gorosaurus and Baragon that she recently met Gigan on Matango Island.
Anguirus
Rodan was one of the many monsters who went to investigate a strange cactus that suddenly appeared on the island, unknown to them that it was actually a Xilien pawn called Gororin, with Cactus Square being set up as an area on the island. Rodan also appeared to help strengthen a defensive formation against the cactus monster and Xilien pawn Gororin when it began rolling around the island and attacking the other monsters though it easily charged through them and knocked them over.
SpaceGodzilla's Spirit Again
Rodan first appeared in a flashback showing the time he had his aura removed by the SpaceGodzilla-possessed Godzilla. Rodan was later found in critical condition at Point 128, having been attacked by SpaceGodzilla's ghost, being transported to the Monster Hospital as a result of his injuries. Misato later watched a video of Rodan drinking at Gabara Pond, realising that both he and Gorosaurus had drunk from the pond and that they had actually drunk poisoned water rather than been attacked by SpaceGodzilla's ghost, leading her to later realise that SpaceGodzilla's ghost was actually a hologram projected by the Xiliens.
After then helping in the defeat of the real SpaceGodzilla who had taken the form of Super Special SpaceGodzilla High Grade Type 2, Misato left to go to the Monster Hospital and tend to both Gorosaurus and Rodan's sickness now that she had information on the poison.
Fire Rodan
Information on Rodan's ancestors was given when Misato read an ancient text just before her father informed her that Junior has passed out. While Godzilla was fighting the mushroom monster Neo-Hedorah, Rodan appeared to assist him by producing winds from his wings that blew Neo-Hedorah back and stopped its mushroom-spreading breath infect Godzilla. Rodan then helped the pair of them escape by picking Godzilla up and flying away from the mushroom monster.
After Neo-Hedorah attacked several of the monsters on Godzilla Island and causes them to grow mushrooms on their backs, Rodan was seen flying on the screen in the G-Guard base, having escaped Neo-Hedorah. Rodan visits the Forest of Awakening where King Caesar lives so that a ritual to transform him into Fire Rodan can commence, requiring Misato to pray so the spiritual transformation can take place. Though the transformation is successful, Rodan struggles with the high temperatures and collapses, causing the ritual to fail. King Caesar and Misato attempt to revive Rodan but to no success. Later, when Neo-Hedorah is on the verge of victory, King Caesar calls out to the infected monsters all over the island to pray so that Rodan can transform into Fire Rodan, with the combined prayers of Misato and the infected monsters causing the ritual to succeed. Now in the form of Fire Rodan, he flew over to Neo-Hedorah to attack the Xilien pawn and fired his flame breath at Neo-Hedorah, burning the monster. The weakened Godzilla noticed this and joined in with his own atomic breath, the combined might of both attacks destroying Neo-Hedorah for good. Rodan returned to his regular form and flew away, having completed his mission.

Wind gusts
Similar to many other Rodan incarnations, this Rodan is capable of producing powerful winds by flapping his wings. He used this ability to assist Godzilla in a battle against Neo-Hedorah, both blowing the monster itself back as well as the breath attack producing by the monster and so sparing Godzilla infection from the mushrooms.
Physical capabilities
Rodan was strong enough to knock himself, Godzilla and King Ghidorah into the sea. He is also shown to be similar in strength to Megalon when the two battled in the sky. Rodan also uses his beak against opponents such as when he attempted to attack several monsters with this strategy: Destoroyah, Mecha-King Ghidorah and Proto-Moguera.
Rodan is also capable of lifting Godzilla when the monster has been injured and needs to carried away such as when he was badly injured by both the Infrared Auto-Blaster and Gigan.
Fire breath

When transformed into the alternate form Fire Rodan, Rodan gains the ability to shoot flames reaching over 40,000°C from his mouth. He uses this ability to destroy Neo-Hedorah when combining the attack with Godzilla's atomic breath.
Weaknesses
Rodan was easily defeated by Destoroyah who threw Rodan to the ground when he tried to peck the monster from behind. Rodan was also hurt by the toxic fumes emitted by Hedorah's meteor and the resulting acid rain, which hurt every other monster on the island caught by it and sapped their power. Baby Mothra was capable of wrapping Rodan in a cocoon using her silk which left him unable to move but didn't seem to actually hurt him.
Rodan is killed by Godzilla when he is possessed by SpaceGodzilla's ghost and absorbs Rodan's aura but is later returned back to life.
Roar
This incarnation of Rodan reuses the roar of the Showa Rodan.

- Rodan is the only kaiju in Godzilla Island who is played by multiple toys with different designs, being mainly portrayed with a toy based on the Heisei Rodan but also occasionally by a toy of the original Rodan.
Notes
- ↑ Rodan does not fight Hedorah itself but is hurt by the gases Hedorah's meteor spreads.
