The Human Vapor (ガス人間,   Gasu Ningen, lit. "Gas Man") is a gaseous kaijin who first appeared in the 1960 Toho tokusatsu film The Human Vapor. The character returned in a 2009 stage adaptation of the film and again in a 2026 Netflix television adaptation.

Design

In The Human Vapor, the Human Vapor in his humanoid form simply resembles a Japanese man, enveloped in a blue glow.

In Human Vapor, the Human Vapor maintains Ren Tsutsumida’s visage, although appears zombie-like; his eyes are dilated, unblinking, and do not shift their gaze from an indistinct point in the near distance (< there has GOT to be a better word for this). When clothed, he often wears an oversized cyan coat

Personality

In The Human Vapor, Mizuno is

In Human Vapor, Ren Tsutsumida was a kind man willing to put others before himself. He . As the Human Vapor, Ren exhibits little personality aside from determination, only mirroring the desires of those who make wishes to him. He holds no regard for ethics or relationships, even going so far as to kill his own daughter under Takeshi Miura’s orders.

History

Showa era

The Human Vapor

Mizuno was a former test pilot for the JASDF, but retired after he was diagnosed with cancer, and was then confined to a sanatorium for an extended period of time as a result. After his discharge, he gained employment as a school librarian, until a man by the name of Dr. Sano offered Mizuno to become a "test subject" for a scientist's projects. However, the tests backfired and Mizuno became an indestructible vapor man. He then began a life of crime in an attempt to support his girlfriend, Fujichiyo Kasuga.

Reiwa era

Human Vapor

Ren Tsutsumida was a young man who frequented a local ramen shop, Bunko Ramen. On one seemingly ordinary day, Ren ordered his usual bowl of (corn and whatnot), but noticed a child standing longingly through the window. He asked for a second order as he approached the girl, offering to provide company and help her return home. She hesitated,

Abilities

Transformation

In The Human Vapor, the Human Vapor is able to convert his entire body to a gaseous state by concentrating, typically placing his hand over his heart to focus on his heartbeat.[3] When in his vapor form, Mizuno can wrap himself around people's heads, causing them to die of asphyxiation; even brief exposure to his gaseous form can render a man unconscious. He can also spread his form thinly enough to achieve effective invisibility, while remaining strong enough to lift a stack of bills.

In Human Vapor, Ren can dissolve his own flesh to become a cloud of fog. In this state, he can move through the air at remarkable speeds equivalent to that of a small car. Additionally,

(I NEED TO PUT AN IMAGE OF HIS SINGLE EYE FORM FROM EP3 HERE TO SHOW THAT HE CAN SELECTIVELY REFORM BODY PARTS)

Invulnerability

The Human Vapor is invulnerable to any physical damage, including bullets, regardless of whether he is in his gaseous form or not.

Weaknesses

In The Human Vapor, Mizuno finally met his end when his lover Fujichiyo Kasuga used a lighter to ignite the U.M. Gas that Tokyo police had secreted into the theater she was performing in, setting off a massive explosion. Mizuno managed to crawl out of the destroyed theater, unable to fully hold his form, then solidified as he died.

In Human Vapor, the Human Vapor was briefly stunned after being set ablaze by a gas-covered Fujita Fujikawa. Although this did not kill the Human Vapor, he reformed in an exhausted position and was unable to complete Miura’s order to kill the siblings, leaving Kaho Fujikawa alive.

Trivia

  • Mizuno's final moments evoke the Universal horror classics The Invisible Man (1933) and The Wolf Man (1941), both of which ended with their title characters becoming normal humans again upon death.
  • The Ultraman Gaia monster Wolf Gas is a partial homage to the Human Vapor, combining that character's gaseous transforming abilities with a more obvious werewolf motif.[4]

For future reference: It’s difficult for me to verify if something is a Bandai Premium exclusive because both standard and exclusive releases tend to end up alongside each other on “import toy” websites, often with no designation of which is which.
